Le Grand Cerf Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Pale straw in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice grassy and citrus notes along with some VERY mild pink grapefruit. On the medium side of length the wine displays some nice softer acidity minerality and mouth grip, elegant … nice and dry. This is not your Chilean or New Zealand edgy Sauv blanc, more of a softer baby brother which makes it even more food friendly! I went into the cellar to find something more subtle to match with Chilean seabass and this was the perfect match. I would give this an -88. More of a drink now style of wine but easily enjoyed for the next 1-2 years IMHO. From the LCBO web site, check stock

2020 Speck Bros. Family Tree ‘The Goat Lady’ Chardonnay VQA

Slightly golden in color with a rich golden delicious apple nose. On the mid palate the wine packs a vibrant golden delicious apple note to match the nose along with some noticeable oaking notes like butterscotch and the like. On the medium length finish the wine displays some creamy notes along with some mild acidity, the fruit lingers nicely on the tongue. This will never be mistake for anything other than an oaked chard, and to some extent the fruit is a little overwhelmed by the oaking. Is it overbaked? Well that’s something that you would need to decide. Not my favorite chard of all time, and the 10 g/l is noticeable but not overwhelming. I’d give this an 87-88. From the LCBO web site, check stock, we paired it with pan fried white bass, and to say it was a match made in heaven would be an exaggeration, it went ok, slightly too sweet, something dryer would have complimented the meal better IMHO. Food pairing is such an art, ya this day I missed the perfect pair … it happens.

2020 Miraval Rosé

Salmon in color with soft red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some strawberry and cranberry notes … On the tongue there’s a hint of pepper and sharp tart notes that’s a little unusual and lasts a while, mostly without food. With food it is less noticeable but still unusual. We paired it with hamburgers and it kind of fought with the food. Not a perfect match at all … On the medium length finish the wine displays some citrus and tart notes that linger lightly … The complexity on this wine is interesting in that it has layers of flavors. I would give it an 87-88, one must be very careful what it is paired with. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Inky dark in color with a big black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays vibrant fruit forward black cherry notes along with some light mocha. On the lighter side of medium in length the wine displays soft tannins and acidity. The black fruits linger in the mouth. There’s a sweetness to the wine that seems higher than it is. There’s no errant minty or herbal notes that I don’t care for, so at least there’s that 😉 We paired it with a strip loin, and it went ok, but not really a compliment to the meal. Now comes the question … would I run back and grab more? Nahh there’s better wines. It’s ok just not an amazing wine to my tastes. This is a very fruit forward, drink now style … I would give it an 87-88, from the LCBO web site, check stock:

D’Angelo Aglianico del Vulture 2016

Dark in color with a funky nose, lots of wood and earthy notes coming through, unusual to say the least. On the mid palate the wine displays some typical rough edgy notes, black cherries, earth notes to match the nose and some dominate oak. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm dryness, edgy, velvety tannins and vibrant acidity. This is a typically rustic wine with higher levels of complexity than I am use to on Aglianicos. This is the first time I’ve noticed the del Vulture in the name and Wikipedia says ” Located on volcanic soils derived from nearby Mount Vulture“. This is definitely an interesting wine with a lot of character, but be careful what you serve it with, IMHO this is NOT a smooth elegant wine. We served it with lasagne and it went ok, not a perfect pairing but good none the less. I would give it a solid 88. from the LCBO web site check stock:

Speck Bros. Family Tree The Padré Cabernet/Merlot 2019

Dark in color with a nice vibrant black cherry nose. On the mid palate it spot on matches the nose with nice dark cherries, some tobacco notes, and rich mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays some mild pepper and smooth tannins. This is a really good steak wine, the sugar content at 10g/l is a little higher than I would like and you can definitely taste the sweetness, but it’s fairly balanced. There are some noticeable alcohol notes on the finish. I would give this an -88 or so, which for the price is not bad at all. I couldn’t find anything about the specific blend other than it being cab sauv/cab franc and merlot. Speck have been doing some amazing stuff, their Three of Hearts Rose is one of my fav roses out of Niagara right now. From the LCBO web site, check stock.

Heavenly aromas rise from the glass – red and black cherry/berry fruit, dark plum and grilled savoury herbs. It’s sourced from the holy trinity of the Bordeaux blend – cabernet franc/cabernet sauvignon/merlot. Flavours of black bramble berry and juicy Bing cherry are joined on the mid-palate with lively tang and pizzazz. It’s medium-plus bodied with good balance and excellent mouthfeel and lingering finish; it’s so much more than the psalm of its parts. Pick up a case or so and rejoice over the next year and even longer and pour with roast turkey and all the fixings. Exceptional Value! Drink or cellar. Score – 91. Sons of Eden Freya Riesling 2019

Biases are always better when they are put up front … Well, I really don’t like sweet wines, and sadly a lot of Rieslings are sweet … Not all though. I first tasted the 2018 vintage of this wine and enjoyed it. I’ve also had some Alsace ones that are dry and enjoyed them as well. this wine is pale straw in color with a honey suckle, floral nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some beautiful vibrant fruit, nice honey suckle and lime notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some rich floral notes, crisp acidity, lovely dryness and minerality. This is a beautiful Riesling and would be super food friendly with lots of ability to hold it’s own. Be careful not to serve this too cold unless your intentionally trying to soften it. I would give this a solid 88. We paired it with pan friend pickerel and it went perfectly. Total yum … from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Maria Papoila Loureiro/Alvarinho 2020

Pale straw in color with a mild nose, about the only thing mild about this wine … on the mid palate the wine displays some vibrant tart green apple notes. On the medium to long length finish this wine displays different characters with and without food … Without good the wine displays some beautiful long, crisp notes, vibrant citrus that stick to the tongue giving some long mouth grip that lives on beautifully … with food the wine is not so overwhelming as to blow anything you might pair it with away. We paired it with smoked sausage and it went well. I would give this wine a solid 88 and if I can find more, I’ll grab more. This will easily keep another 1-2 years. This wine is right up my alley, dry, crisp and lively … yumm … This was a gift, thanks Niky, and we really enjoyed it. Unlike some vino verde’s there is no effervescent notes. Boschendal 1685 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Dark in color with nice cherry nose, much milder when first opened. On the mid palate the wine displays some mild fruit on the mid palate, dark cherries and the like. But, where this wine lives is in the finish where the fruit comes to life in the mouth after you’ve swallowed along some firm peppery notes, noticeable alcohol, strong acidity and tannins, nice and dry. I’m hard pressed to say if this wine is just a little young or what. A day later I had some of the leftover wine (I know right, bizarre concept), and the mid palate hadn’t improved much. Bruce Jack Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Pale straw in color with a nice mild citrus and minerally nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft citrus notes, some green apple and some noticeable minerality, super dry. This wine strikes you straight off as being ‘different’ … Not the usual grassy, or lemony wine, something a little unique. we paired it with bacon and mushroom quiche and it went well. 2020 Masi Masianco Pinot Grigio

I don’t buy a lot of Pinot grigio, I find them too soft for my palate, but a friend Gino served this one so I bought one to give it a longer try … Pale straw in color with a nice crisp, citrus nose. On the mid palate the wine delivers some nice crisp dry citrus notes and zest. On the medium length finish the wine has a nice little bite to it with some crisp dryness, acidity and minerality that coat the palate, not as big as say some New Zealand Sauv blancs but quite vibrant, we were impressed. Quite dry, just how I like my whites. We paired it with a air fried, rotisserie pork tenderloin and it went well … I would give it a -88 or so, for the price a good deal. From the LCBO web site, check stock … heads up this is a general list product NOT a vintages. I was shocked reading the LCBO description that is made with “semi-dried” verduzzo grapes, this is the same process, apassimento, that’s used in Amarone. Interesting … The LCBO say light and crisp, I think calling this light is underselling …

The wine has some good punch to it, we put it up against duck confit leg and it held it’s own nicely complimenting the duck while cutting through the fat. I would give this an -88. 2019 Trius Distinction Pinot Noir

I picked this one up on the way out of the grocery store at the Wine Shop, this wine is from Niagara on the Lake, generally speaking, compared to Beamsville, NOL are softer … This wine is garnet in color with a mild red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft red berries, raspberries and strawberries and the like. On the finish the wine is quite light with super soft tannins and acidity. I’d really like to say I enjoyed this wine, but sadly it’s a step off of a kit wine. I would give it an 87 or so, which for the price is a disappointment, if I had more I’d return them. From the wineries web site:

Our Pinot Noir underwent traditional red wine making, 48% was aged in older barriques and puncheons for 10 months (100% French oak), and 52% was aged in large neutral French oak casks$19.95

Domaine Tselepos Driopi Agiorgitiko 2018

Dark in color with a nice dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some big black berry notes along with some dark chocolate. On the medium length in length the wine displays some big peppery notes, noticeable alcohol, firm dry tannins and acidity. As with most Agiorgitikos this is a bigger wine, we paired it with a striploin and it went well, with food the flavors aren’t overwhelming, on it’s own the complexity of the wine is easier to appreciate. I would give it an -88. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2020

I’ve had this Sauv blanc a number of vintages in the past and liked it … Pale straw in color with a nice grassy nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice vibrant grassy notes to go along with the nose along with some nice grapefruit and green apple. This is a solid, edgy, racy sauv blanc so be careful what you serve it with . On first meal we had it with Carbonara and honestly it overpowered the food. Take two was with duck wings and it cut through the fat beautifully. I would give it an -88, a classic New Zealand Sauv blanc. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2020 from LCBO

It’s classically styled and expressed, showing Granny Smith apple, apricot, lemon peel and jasmine notes on the nose, leading to a wonderfully flavoursome palate offering excellent fruit power and persistency, making it fabulously drinkable. At its best: now to 2023. Score – 93. (Sam Kim, wineorbit.co.nz, March 2021)

Fina Nero d’Avola 2017

This wine was suggested by a colleague, thanks Semion! Dark in color with a mild black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some vibrant black berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some noticeable oak, some pepper and chocolate, nice and dry. This is definitely more of a fruit forward drink now style of wine. We paired it with a BBQ striploin and it went well, and did not overpower the meat at all. Quite nice. I’d give it a -88 or so, would also be a good pizza or spaghetti wine. Underwood Rosé 2020

Try as I did, I could not find ANYTHING about the grapes used in this rose. Salmon in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some strawberry and a hint of sweetness and honeysuckle. Honestly I wouldn’t have picked it up, but their own description says “Tasting Notes: Rose, Peach, Honeysuckle” and ya, I can get it, peach is subtle at best. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice vibrant acidity and dryness. This is not a bad Rose, but not a fav of mine either, the honeysuckle notes just seem errant to the wine. I would give it an 87-88. Luckily I only bought one ;( From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Underwood Rosé 2020 from LCBO

This rosé comes from sites in the Willamette and Umpqua valleys and offers up great balance and a food-friendly, crisp character. There is considerable elegance here, along with floral, juicy citrus and tropical tones. A lip-smacking delight as a sipper, it will also be a fine match for summer salads or grilled seafood.
