Lander-Jenkins Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 from LCBO

This Cabernet from Lander-Jenkins is crafted to be fruit-forward and food-friendly, with luscious dark fruit, cherry, earthy minerality and tobacco. It’s a wine that scores well above its price point, and it will be a great option for grilled peppers and mushrooms with your favourite cut of steak.

Buena Vista North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the delivers some nice vibrant dark cherry notes. On the medium length finish the wine delivers some nice mocha and dark chocolate notes along with some vibrant acidity and smooth tannins, nice and dry. This is a smooth easy drinking, not fruit forward cab. There aren’t any errant minty, or herbal notes, I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with red sauce meat spaghetti and it went well. This is a very food friendly wine and can be paired with lots of choices, but nothing too big or it will overwhelm the wine. For the price this is a good deal, and I will probably go back and get some more, but this is more of a drink now wine. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Buena Vista North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 from LCBO

This is a solid, good value cabernet which is not a comment I often make about California cabernets at this price. It is medium-full bodied with just enough acid and tannin structure, amid some ripe blackberry/blackcurrant jam character. The length is very good, the finish shows some cab tannic grit. Good to very good length. I wanted a bit more because I like the wine. Score – 89. (David Lawrason, winealign.com, Jan. 11, 2021)

The Mazzei 2018 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli shows a classic bouquet with tart berry fruit, forest floor, bitter almond, blue flower, cola and grilled herb. The wine presents a classic, cool-vintage profile that suits Sangiovese very nicely as it pulls out the bright, red berry energy that is inherent to this variety. Domaine Bellevue Touraine Sauvignon 2019

Pale straw in color with a floral nose, in a lot of way the nose reminded me of a Gewürztraminer. On the mid palate the wine is an odd taste, some smoky notes, some more floral notes along with some citrus, this actually even on the mid palate reminded me of a Gewürztraminer, which sadly, I am not a fan. This is a nice dry wine, but it’s about the only area I was inclined to say “nice’ about. Honestly, this wine perplexed me in finding a way to describe it. A blend of Tannat, Pinenc (a native Occtaine grape with different names by location) and Cabernet Sauvigon, this wine is powerfully structured and dense. Dixie & Bass Red Blend 2018

Dark in color with dark cherries on the nose. On the mid palate the wine packs black cherries to match the nose but where this wine lives is in the finish where it’s medium in length with some dark cherries lingering along with some mocha notes, black pepper, some leather/oaky notes and some noticeable malbec like flavors. There’s even some jammy notes and hint of bitter, maybe dark chocolate on the finish. The LCBO notes refer to it as classic Bordeaux, but to me this lacks the kind of integration and grace that come from a Bordeaux, so while the blend may be similar … ya this isn’t that IMHO. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad wine, but I won’t be jogging over to the LCBO the grab a case either. Maybe it’s just too young to have come into it’s own, but I don’t think so. Basilica Cafaggio Single Estate Chianti Classico 2017

Dark in color with a red berry nose, offset straight out of the bottle by some medicinal notes that eased as it breathed. On the mid palate the wine displays some some strong tomato notes, overwhelming oak and strong acidity. On the medium length finish the wine displays some smooth tannins (about the only thing smooth about this wine) along with some lingering oak and red berries. This really is just way too young, it MAY improve, it may not. I tried it a day later after it sat in the bottle and it definitely softened and the oak was less dominant to the flavors, which to me confirms it’s just too young. Collavini T Friulano 2018

Pale straw in color with a nice minerally nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice crisp, dry, minerally and citrus notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some vibrant acidity and the citrus notes linger nicely. This is a smooth elegant food friendly wine. We paired it with shrimp fettucine alfredo and it was a perfect match with enough bite to hold it’s own without overwhelming the food. I would give it an 88+, which for the price is a VERY good deal IMHO. Yummm … From the LCBO web site, check stock.

Alira Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Dark in color with a nice dark cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice vibrant black cherry notes that match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dusty tannins, vibrant acidity and dark chocolate notes, nice and dry. This was a surprisingly good cab, I had no idea what to expect, I’ve not had a Romanian cab before but this was good I would give it an 88 or so, which for the price is a very good deal. Yum. This is a hearty robust wine, be sure and pair it with something that can hold up to it. We paired it with trout and it was a bit overwhelming to the food. From the LCBO web site, check stock:
