Mi Terruño Expresión Cabernet Franc 2016

Dark in color with a mild black cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely varietal cab franc cherry notes along with some mild pepper. On the medium length finish the wine displays some soft tannins and acidity. This is a super food friendly, entry level, approachable cab franc. If your looking for a Cab Franc to introduce someone to it, this is a great choice. If you prefer a big bold in your face Cab Franc, ya this isn’t that. I would give it an -88. Porcupine Ridge Rosé 2020

Salmon in color with a nice tart minerally nose. On the mid palate the wine starts out packing a good tart punch of cranberry and the like. On the lighter side of medium in length the wine peters out quickly with not a lot of depth of complexity. Of late we have had a number of boisterous Rose’s , ya this isn’t one of those. I would give it an 87-88, especially given the price. I wouldn’t be rushing out for more, but we enjoyed it none the less. Nice to try a South African Rose! from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Arboleda Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Dark in color with a nice black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine is a lovely black cherry spot on varietal cab with no errant mint or herbal notes, just clean fruit, but not fruity. There’s some chocolate and peppery notes as well … On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice tannins and acidity, nice and dry. This is a clean well made cab perfect for the BBQ red meats of the summer! Yumm … I would give it an 88 which for the prices is a good deal. This is one of the better Chilean cabs I’ve had, and I’ve had this one over 4 vintages and it’s been consistently yummy. Terredora Di Paolo Aglianico 2018

Dark in color with a nice nice dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays edgy sharp red berries along with some noticeable strong oak notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some vibrant acidity along with some noticeable tannic notes. If your looking for a smooth elegant wine, ya this isn’t that. We paired it with bacon wrapped filet mignon and it held it’s own, even a little strong for it. This is a perfect pizza or spaghetti wine. Corvidae Rook Merlot 2018

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine packs a nice punch with some mid weight black berries and chocolate. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice black pepper and some medium tannins. The tannins and acidity live on nicely in the mouth, nice and dry. This is smack in the middle of the range, no way it’s fruity, but not a Bordeaux style edgy Merlot either. I like it. I would give it an 88 or so. This could hold it’s own with lots of different foods. A little too big for red fish … from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Domaine Bellevue Touraine Sauvignon 2019

Pale straw in color with a floral nose, in a lot of way the nose reminded me of a Gewürztraminer. On the mid palate the wine is an odd taste, some smoky notes, some more floral notes along with some citrus, this actually even on the mid palate reminded me of a Gewürztraminer, which sadly, I am not a fan. This is a nice dry wine, but it’s about the only area I was inclined to say “nice’ about. Honestly, this wine perplexed me in finding a way to describe it. A blend of Tannat, Pinenc (a native Occtaine grape with different names by location) and Cabernet Sauvigon, this wine is powerfully structured and dense. Dixie & Bass Red Blend 2018

Dark in color with dark cherries on the nose. On the mid palate the wine packs black cherries to match the nose but where this wine lives is in the finish where it’s medium in length with some dark cherries lingering along with some mocha notes, black pepper, some leather/oaky notes and some noticeable malbec like flavors. There’s even some jammy notes and hint of bitter, maybe dark chocolate on the finish. The LCBO notes refer to it as classic Bordeaux, but to me this lacks the kind of integration and grace that come from a Bordeaux, so while the blend may be similar … ya this isn’t that IMHO. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad wine, but I won’t be jogging over to the LCBO the grab a case either. Maybe it’s just too young to have come into it’s own, but I don’t think so. Basilica Cafaggio Single Estate Chianti Classico 2017

Dark in color with a red berry nose, offset straight out of the bottle by some medicinal notes that eased as it breathed. On the mid palate the wine displays some some strong tomato notes, overwhelming oak and strong acidity. On the medium length finish the wine displays some smooth tannins (about the only thing smooth about this wine) along with some lingering oak and red berries. This really is just way too young, it MAY improve, it may not. I tried it a day later after it sat in the bottle and it definitely softened and the oak was less dominant to the flavors, which to me confirms it’s just too young. Voyager Estate Girt by Sea Cabernet/Merlot 2017

I’ve had this one at a tasting before and was thrilled to see it come through the LCBO. Inky dark in color with a nice black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with lovely rich, black berries, black cheries and some mocha notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth elegant tannins and good acidity. This is a nice, complex, elegant wine, not a bargain by any means but it is worth the money IMHO. I would give it an 88+. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Voyager Estate Girt by Sea Cabernet/Merlot 2017 from LCBO

It’s matured in all-French oak and while it’s mostly cabernet and merlot there’s a small portion of petit verdot in the mix. It’s medium weight and fluid with blackcurrant, milk chocolate and gravel notes slipping amiably through. It has shape and texture but integrity of fruit is key here. No mucking about; this is a good cabernet to drink. Drink by: 2030. Score – 93. (Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 1, 2019)

Domaine de Triennes Rosé 2020

A lovely salmon in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice crisp tartness, strawberries and the like that dance on the tongue beautifully. On the medium length finish the tart acidity lingers nicely. This is a hearty, boisterous rose, if your use to sweet sugar bombs, ya this so isn’t that. I would give it an 88+. A really nice wine with lots of oomph to hold it’s own with food. from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Domaine de Triennes Rosé 2020 from LCBO

Domaine de Triennes is co-owned by Burgundy notables Jacques Seysses, founder of Domaine Dujac; and Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Their 2020 rosé is a juicy blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Merlot that delivers good concentration and lithe power, with apricot, citrus, cherry, raspberry, melon and garrigue. An engaging, complex wine that will make a great sipper and pair with salads or grilled-chicken kebabs.READ LESS
