2017 A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir

Garnet in color with a nice red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice cranberry, and sour cherry notes along with some rustic and earthy tones. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and acidity. This is a vibrant, fruit forward pinot noir. We paired it with duck, and honestly it was a bit too big for it. Quite a tasty wine. I’d give it an 88+. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Sons of Eden Freya Riesling 2018

Pale in color with a varietal honey suckle nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with honey suckle being dominant along with some citrus, and lime notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice acidity. This is quite a dry, varietal, fruit forward drink now riesling I quite enjoyed it. I’d give it an 88 or so … From the LCBO web site, check stock: The LCBO say aromatic and flavorful and I’d have to agree.

2019 Aveleda Vinho Verde

This is the second Vinho Verde from Alveleda but this one doesn’t give away which grapes are involved on the label or on the LCBO web site. Pale straw in color with a mild, dry, minerally citrus nose. There’s some really noticeable effervescent notes. On the mid palate the wine is dominated by lime notes along with some vibrant acidity and minerality. On the lighter side of medium in length the acidity and citrus notes linger slightly. I’d have to say I prefer the other wine, but this one is ok too, and cheap and cheerful 😉 From the LCBO web site: Check stock With a bit of digging I found the grapes used on the Winery’s web site : Loureiro, Arinto, Trajadura and Azal. I don’t know if the LCBO web site is correct but it says 15 g/l which shocks me, the acidity really hides the sugar content.

Mountadam Riesling 2018

Pale straw in color with a very mild honeysuckle nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice crisp, dry, minerality, as long as some citrus notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp minerality that lingers nicely in the mouth. It’s nice and dry, but be careful to not serve it too cold, warmer and it’s depth comes through more. I would give this an 88 or so, and to my tastes a lot more towards a Alsace Riesling than a sweet German Riesling. From the LCBO web site: Check stock

2019 Jacob’s Creek Moscato Rosé

I picked this one up without looking more closely … Salmon in color with lots of bubbles as you pour it (I didn’t even know it was a sparkling wine). On the nose the wine displays some sweet sugary notes along with some strawberry … On the mid palate, ooooh I wasn’t ready for that … it’s a mouth of sweet strawberry jam with bubbles. On the finish, oh forget it, this is all sugar … This reminds me more of a pop or a wine cooler. At 67 g/l residual sugar, if you choose to buy this, be ready for sweet. It might be ok for sipping on a patio, but don’t try and pair it with much in food, I have trouble thinking of ANYTHING it would go well with.

Clos Bel-Air 2016

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice black plums along with some mocha notes. On the lighter side of medium in length the wine displays some nice smooth dry tannins along with a hint of green notes. This is quite a good wine for the $$s. This is a wine from the right bank of Bordeaux. I would give it an 88 … We paired it with a filet mignon and it went perfectly. It is more of a drink now wine, but should easily keep another year or two. I have no idea what the LCBO wine critic tasted … sure wasn’t the same bottle I did … From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Such a fine example of the merlot dominant blend of this estate offering characteristic richness laced with spice and tension from acid. Notes of pepper and musk give a seductive appeal that is sure to please widely. The tender fruit of merlot dominates this wine in the most elegant fashion. Tannins are still quite firm but the fruit is abundant and mouth-fillingly fleshy. A notable value not to be missed. A pleasure to drink right away with a short decant but with the stuffing to last another 3-4 years. Score – 90. (Sara d’Amato, winealign.com, April 9, 2019)

Hess Select Monterey County Chardonnay 2018

Biases up front, I prefer an oaked chard over an unoaked. When I read the description on the LCBO web site I was under the misunderstanding this was an oaked chard. Even the categorization of full bodied and rich to me lead me to believe this was an oaked chard. And then reality hit. As Cuomo said to Trump … reality wins EVERY time … I digress. Pale in color with a nice apple/pear nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice golden delicious apple and pear notes to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine has some nice mild acidity, but not very creamy, nice and dry. If you looking for a gently oaked chard this might be right up your alley, and frankly, even the back of the bottle says it’s gently oaked so I have no idea what the LCBO Vintages panel tasted. I would give this an 87-88 simply cause it isn’t to my tastes. If the LCBO were taking wines back, I’d return the second bottle.

Salmon in color with a mild red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice strawberry notes along with some citrus. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp acidity, nice dryness along with some nice red wine like complexity. Quite a good Rose. I would give it an -88, perfect for the patio and with enough going on to hold it’s own with food! 2015 Redstone Cab/merlot

Dark in color with a nice rich red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice firm dark cherry notes along with some earthy notes and mocha/coffee … On the medium length finish the wine displays some velvety, edgy tannins and vibrant acidity. This wine is all about your preferences, if your open to a bigger wine, with food that can withstand an edgy wine it’s good. If you prefer a softer gentler wine you probably want to decant it or age it. For me it’s a drink now with lots of character $29.95 at the winery … Sadly no details on the web site. I was about ready to press save on this post when it started … a significant (not the worst I’ve had) allergic reaction, unstoppable sneezing, nose running, for about an hour. This happens to me when the wine has higher than usual levels of sulphites, odd because I’ve had many Tawse and Redstone wines and this has never happened.

2017 Small Gully The Formula Robert’s Shiraz

Inky dark in color with a mild black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some juicy, fruit forward, black berries and black currants along with some herbal notes. On the lighter side on the finish the wine displays mild tannins and acidity with the fruity notes living on, with little to no pepper. In spite of being 15.9% alcohol the alcohol was not prevalent on the taste buds. This is definitely a softer, gentler, fruity wine, honestly I look for more at this price point. The LCBO call this full bodied and smooth, I personally would say fruity and smooth. I would give it an 87+. We paired t with some bacon wrapped filet mignon, and it went ok. It would be fine for softer meals like salmon or trout … From the LCBO web site, check stock:

2019 Peller Rose

Salmon in color with a nice strawberry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays nice crisp strawberry notes to match the nose along with some nice citrus acidity. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with the citrus acidity living on nicely in the mouth. I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with BBQ ribs and the crisp acidity cut through the fat and sweetness of the sauce perfectly, and the nice flavors held there own. from the winery’s web site: $22.95 We bought it at the wine shop at Longos.

Private Reserve Rosé 2018

Inspired by the refreshing Rosés of Provence, this pretty pink wine is made from a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes.

Harvested from the vineyards of long-standing growers for Peller Estates. This Rosé is a blend of 87% Pinot Noir, 10% Gamay Noir and 3% Pinot Meunier grapes which were allowed several hours of skin contact for a perfect pink colour, then whole bunch pressed, cool fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Bottled early for full fruit expression.

Delicate copper pink colour with a pretty aroma of freshly picked peach, melon, red berry and Rainier cherry. A light, dry and refreshing Rosé. The palate is refreshed with flavours of wild field berries, red apple and pear. Lively notes of cranberry and red berries linger through on the finish.

Serve chilled at 10 to 12ºC. Casually sip on warm spring and summer days or enjoy with a Greek salad; summer salads with feta cheese; feta bruschetta; barbecued shrimp skewers; crab cakes; grilled calamari; poached salmon; pork tenderloin with a rhubarb rosé wine reduction; tapas; pissaladiere; Margherita pizza; pasta with rosé sauce; eggplant parmigiana. Enjoy this wine while young and fresh

Carpineto Chianti Classico 2017

Dark in color with a nice cherry nose. On the mid palate the black fruits are smacked immediately by firm tannins and acidity. The wine is just too young to be approachable now and just completely overshadows what is likely a nice wine. We let it sit once opened for a few days with the cork on and it softened, so if your drinking it now you will need to consider decanting it and leaving it for a while, or cellar it for a bit, maybe even a year or two, which is what I’ve done with the second bottle we bought. With food the wine is softer, but you better be having something with big flavor, or your going to equally overwhelm the food. I would give it an 87 with the potential of improving dramatically with patience. From the LCBO web site: Check stock:

2014 Chateau Capbern

I bought this as part of a Bordeaux futures order quite a while back. About three years ago I opened one and it was a tannic monster. I decanted it, and it still was unapproachable. I gave in and aerated it and it was palatable. So I decided it was time to give it a try again … Dark in color with a big dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays big rich, bold, dark chocolate notes, somewhat bitter, some mocha and dark berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm tannins, acidity and strong peppery notes. If you like your wines on the bigger side it’s ready otherwise it can wait another year or two. I would give it an 88+. It was $29.95 and well worth it. This is a left bank wine from Bordeaux.

Lenz Moser Prestige Grüner Veltliner 2018

Golden in color with a nice tart nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some mild effervescence along with some nice crisp tartness, green apples and lime notes. On the medium length finish the citrus notes hang around nicely in the mouth, a super food friendly crisp with with nice dryness and minerality. I would give it an 88 or so. Gruner’s are always a great value and this one is no exception … from the LCBO web site, check stock Yumm:
