Rabl Löss Grüner Veltliner 2017

If you haven’t tried a Grüner yet, this is a good one to try, it’s exactly what you can expect from one, and reasonably priced, but I guess I’m getting ahead of myself a little. Pale in color with a nice crisp dry minerally nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice citrus notes, nice crisp dryness and vibrant acidity. The wine has some lovely mouth grip where the lively acidity lingers nicely in the mouth especially as it warms up a little. Leaving lots of dryness on a medium length. This is a super food friendly wine. I would give it an 88 or so. Very nice. Give it a try!

Lornano Chianti Classico 2015

Dark in color with a milder nose … On the mid palate the wine packs a nice punch with big with nice red berries jumping out at your. On the mid palate the wine matches the mid palate with BIG dryness, nice complexity and nice mocha notes. The complexity of this wine is punching well above it’s price point. Really yummy, as long as you like bigger wines. I would say this is a drink now wine, but if you like it softer, a year or two of aging or breathing will soften it … but why would you do that 🙂 I would give this an 88-89 very nice!

2017 Willm Réserve Riesling

It’s always a good place to put one’s biases up front … I don’t like sweet wines. Sadly, a lot of Riesling’s from many places fall into this category, resulting in me going largely off Reisling. Greg, a friend at work recommended I give Alsace Rieslings at try. Alsace is a region right near the border of France and Germany. I recently was perusing the WineAlign limited time offer list and found this one. Every month the LCBO “feature” certain wines at a discounted price, kinda like a sale. So I thought ok no better time than now to test Greg’s recommendation. Interestingly my gf seems to like Greg’s recent recommendations … hmmm. I digress … Pale in color with an interesting nose, straight out of the fridge it was quite mild, as it warmed up the scents started to become more boisterous. Lots of floral notes, some minerality, a hint of honey suckle all come up to greet the nose. Quite inviting … on the mid palate the wine displays some noticeable honey suckle, some nice minerality and some citrus notes. On the medium length finish the wine’s vibrant acidity coats the mouth leaving a nice citrus note. The wine has a slightly syrupy texture to it, noticeable mostly on the finish. This wine has some nice mouth grip and can hold it’s own with a lot of food. I paired it with a shrimp and scallop fettuccine alfredo and it went well. It’s super food friendly. I would have to say … Greg’s right, I liked it 🙁 Wahhhhh I would give it an 88 or so, which for the price is a good deal. Grab some while the LTO is on! I bet it will easily keep for a while! At 5g/l residual sugar, it’s nice and dry!

Voyager Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2016

Pale in color with a slightly smoky nose along with some citrus notes. I don’t get any floral notes one would expect from the semillon. As it turns out, this wine has been aged in oak for 2 months. On the mid palate the wine displays some softer citrus notes along with some vibrant acidity. This is more of an elegant style of sauv blanc Vs some edgy ones. I would give it an -88.

Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages 2017

Dark in color with a dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice dark plums. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and acidity. This particular gamay is not as temperature sensitive as others, but still don’t let it get too warm or too cool. I would give it an -88. A good pair for lighter meals like salmon, trout (which is what we had it with) or pork. This is a general list product so widespread availability.

Cave du Château de Chénas Moulin-à-Vent 2016

I’ve been continuing my exploration of Gamays from France and continue to be converted … LCBO stores sometimes put wines on sale that haven’t moved, this one was at my local store for $14, from an original $19.95, so a no brainer to give it a try. Slightly dark in color with a nice juicy fruity nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice black berries and a hint of sweetness. On the lighter side of medium in length on the finish, the wine displays some nice smooth dry tannins and mild acidity. A super food friendly wine. For the sale price I paid this is a bargain. I would give it an -88. I’m not sure Gamay is going to become one of my favorite wines of all times, but it’s working it’s way into my wine list.

On the medium length finish the wine displays some hints of rhubarb, and some palate coating acidity that lingers beautifully especially without food. This is a super nice rose with some nice complexity to it. For the price, this is a bargain. We enjoyed it. Be careful to pair it with things not too hearty or the wine can be overwhelmed. 2018 Muga Rose

I’ve been on a new path of discovery when it comes to Rose, so I thought I’d give this one a try. Quite pale salmon in color with a soft red berry nose. I found this wine VERY temperature sensitive. Fresh out of the fridge the wine displays some nice light red berries. On the medium length finish the wine displayed mild acidity/minerality. Over the course of an hour the wine warmed up where it’s complexity opened up significantly. The fruit on the mid palate died down, and the palate coating minerality and acidity took over. It’s got some nice complexity in the mouth once warm, especially without food. If you buy this wine, I’d encourage you to leave it out of the fridge for about an hour to allow it open up. It’s nice and dry at 4g/l. I’d give it an -88 or so. Not bad at all for the price! We paired it with BBQ pork with mushroom sauce and it went well, held it’s own without overwhelming the meal. The This wine is Garnacha 60%, Viura 30% and Tempranillo 10%.

2016 Burning Kiln Cureman’s Chard

Pale to slightly golden in color with a nice apple/pear nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely, varietal apple and pear to go with the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice vanilla and good acidity. It’s nice and dry, with noticeable creamyness. It spent 9 months in oak and is a gently oaked chard, but just enough for me. Really, quite a good chard. We paired it with one of my gotos, pan seared sea scallops and the two were like a match made in heaven. Sadly not in the LCBO, but available at the winery for $24.95. When we were there they were at the end of the 2016 vintage and had it on sale for $19.95. A good price for this wine. I would give it an -88. Another impressive wine from this emerging region.

From the winery’s web site:

Cureman’s Chard

Handpicked, hand sorted, and whole cluster pressed, the Chardonnay grapes were harvested at ideal ripening conditions where sugar levels approach 23 Brix while still maintaining fresh aromatics and elegant acidity. This Barrel Fermented Chardonnay was left on its lees with batonage occurring twice a month for a total of 9 months aging in our French Oak Foeders and barrels. Notes of fresh fruit and citrus are carried through with subtle characteristics of honey, butter and soft vanilla bringing a richness out in the finish. 100% Chardonnay – VQA

Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages 2017

Beaujolais as you may or may not know is a Gamay Noir. I have to admit I’ve not been a fan of a number of Ontario Gamays, tough for me to admit 🙂 Beaujolais Nouveau are fruity wines, fermented for short periods, meant to be drunk young which this is not. Beaujolais-Village wines are SUPER sensitive to temperature. I did two experiments. The first started with the wine at room temperature. At room temp it displayed some nice black berry notes on the mid palate with some nice firm acidity and tannins. We had the wine with trout and were on the patio and the wine warmed up. As it warmed up it became softer, and it became fruiter. The wine is nice and dry. I’d give it an -88.

For the second experiment I did what I was told and chilled it for 20 minutes. Straight out of the fridge it had some nice dark fruit but had some nice smooth tannins and finish. This time I kept the bottle in the AC house to let it warm up slower. The warmer it became the more the fruit came out and the softer the finish. This wine has a VERY narrow profile from a temperature point of view. Too warm and it’s bland. Too cold and it’s bland. A little three bears going on.

We were in town to visit the Canadian Raptor Conservancy (a kind of Zoo for Raptors) and dropped by here to check them out. We visited, in all, three wineries in the region, and these guys are by far the most mature of the group. They have repurposed Kilns from Tobacco to make apassimento style wines (think Amarone). They are wisely applying the process selectively, not all grapes lead themselves or benefit from, apassimento. This one is 100% Cab Franc, 100% Kiln dried, and then 24 months in oak. Dark in color with a mild dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some vibrant, big bold black fruits. On the medium length finish the wine has some nice big tannins and acidity. It’s nice and dry at 7.2g/l. This is a BIG BOLD wine. If you like your wines expressive this is a drink now, otherwise aging/decanting will soften it, I like it just the way it is. I would give this an 89. Not in the LCBO but available for $49.95 a bottle at the winery. I also tried their Inferno (Petite Verdot based) and M1 (Merlot based), both of which are also apassimento in style and these were also excellent. Similar taste profiles. All are from estate fruit. Quite an impressive family of wines from an emerging region (for now there is no Appellation for this area). We had lunch on their patio which was lovely as well.

The 2016 Kiln Hanger is an Ontario Wine Award Gold Medal Winner in the Appassimento Red Category.  It was kiln dried for 25 days and aged in French and American Oak for 24 months, producing flavours of raspberry, strawberry jam, and plum, with slight hints of pipe tobacco, nutmeg, and anise.

Thornbury Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Pale in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays a mouth full of pink grapefruit. On the medium length finish the wine displays lovely vibrant acidity with lots of mouth grip. I’d give it an 88 or so.

It is intensely aromatic on the nose showing grapefruit, green rockmelon, kaffir lime and lemon zest characters. The palate delivers excellent fruit power and vibrancy, backed by fine texture and lively mouthfeel. The wine is punchy and tasty, offering fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2019. Score – 91. Mimi en Provence Grande Réserve Rosé 2018

Ok, I have to admit it, I’m not a big Rose fan. I’ve tried a lot of them and been thoroughly underwhelmed. Most a fruity with little to no substance. So much so I’d largely given up on them, sadly, especially Niagara ones. Sorry folks 🙁 I was out at a social event and one of the people was drinking a rose and she let me have a sip and I was surprised. She recommended this one so I thought I’d give it a go. It’s quite light in color with mild red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft strawberry notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some beautiful lively acidity, minerality along with some mild tannins. It’s got quite the bite, I was shocked. The minerality has some nice mouth grip. A very dry wine. This is actually quite a food friendly wine that you could pair with a lot of different foods. I would give it an -88 and maybe, just maybe is the start of me saying I don’t like Roses? We paired it with pizza and it went perfectly. Yummmmmm It was perfect after a great paddle we had in our Kayaks. Oh and the bottle is quite unique and comes with a clever glass resealable top making the bottle perfect to use as a water bottle on your table! Thanks Jennifer for the recommendation!

A blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, this crisply dry Provençal pink wine consistently offers evocations of wild herbs, red berries, apple and watermelon in an elegant frame. It’ll go beautifully, lightly chilled, with grilled salmon or shrimp skewers.

Franciscan Chardonnay 2016

Pale in color with a nice mild apple/pear nose. On the mid palate the wine displays all the varietal fruit notes, apple and pear to match the nose. The wine displays little to no creamyness and little to no vanilla. This is more of a fruit forward, clean, lightly oaked chard. If that’s how you prefer your chards then this is a good one with vibrant fruit coming through. On the medium length finish the wine’s acidity, and minerality come through, it’s nice and dry. Personally I love the oak … I give it an 87-88.

Golden yellow color. Aromas of butter-drizzled nuts, toasted spice cake, mulling spices, and vanilla bean gelato with a velvety, vibrant, fruity medium body and an interesting, long pumpkin loaf, sticky toffee pudding, mocha latte, cinnamon, nutmeg, and star anise finish with coating tannins and moderate oak flavor. A delicious, lengthy Chardonnay that balances vivid acidity and memorable toasty spices. Exceptional. Gold Medal. Best Buy. Best Value U.S. Chardonnay. Score – 92. (tastings.com, Aug. 29, 2018)
