Partake non alcoholic beer

I attended the recent Toronto Wine and Spirits festival and these guys were there sampling there non alcoholic craft brewed beer. If your like me, and these guys it seems, you’ve been underwhelmed by the non alcoholic beers. Why would you want a non alcoholic beer? Well maybe you decide to give your liver a break for a day or two but would still enjoy the taste? I’ve tried two of their offerings at this point the Pale which is available at the LCBO and the Blonde which is available at the Beer store. The Pale is a little more hoppy and bitter than the blond at an IBU of 10 while the Pale is 8. I preferred the Pale, just more to my tastes but both are quite flavorful and give no indication your drinking a non alcoholic beer. At only 0.3% alcohol, and only 15 calories there’s a surprising amount of flavor! I tried the get some of the beer at the beer store only to arrive and find out their online stock was wrong. So I gave up and ordered it directly from the brewery They delivered it quickly and right to my door by Canada Post. Obviously if you can get it at your local beerstore then it’s cheaper simply because they don’t have to ship it to your door. Price wise I paid $55 for a 24, so $2.30 a can.

According to Chelsea from Partake brewing it is legal to drink these anywhere you would a soda or a bottle of water! Way cool! This by the way was confirmed by the Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario who said ” Any beverage containing over 0.5% alcohol is considered an alcoholic beverage and would not be legal to drink in public without appropriate permits. ”

Tawse Growers Blend Pinot Noir 2016

Niagara makes some wonderful Pinot Noirs. So much so I have trouble accepting supporting ones from other places, especially at even higher prices. This one is beautifully garnet in color with a nice soft red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely strawberry fruits, nice and firm. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely vibrant acidity and some nice tannins. This is an elegant well made varietal pinot. The price is creeping up there, but this one is worth it. Yumm. I’d give it an 88+. We paired it with some BBQ trout and it was a little piece of ratatouille in the mouth. I’ve also had the Growers blend Cab Franc and been impresed.

Image for Tawse Growers Blend Pinot Noir 2016 from LCBO

A lightly-hued red in the glass, it offers delicate aromas of piquant spice, cedar and raspberry on the nose. It streaks over the palate with tang, tart and acidity borne of crunchy red fruit flavours – currant, pie cherry and passionfruit – along with wisps of sharp spice. I enjoyed the tart acidity and am confident that with a pasta in tomato sauce, red pizza or lasagne pairing, most others will, too. Score – 90. (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Nov. 17, 2018)

Collavini T Friulano 2017

I picked this one up on a whim, with no research. I saw that it was nice and dry and I’ve enjoyed wines from the Friulano region so what the heck. Pale in color with a nice crisp minerally nose. The wine spot on matches the nose with lots of super crisp, dry minerality, maybe some citrus/lime. Honestly I had some challenges picking out the flavors. On the medium length finish the vibrant acidity, minerality and citrus coat the mouth. This is on the verge of bitter and edgy to some. I would give it an -88. You could easily pair this with alfredo, seafood or other hearty foods and it will hold it’s own. A very nice wine. The LCBO say light and crisp? On what planet?

Quite a developed dry white with pronounced lemon-curd character on the nose. Serious depth and some structure, which are well balanced by lemony freshness at the finish. With more complexity this would rate higher. Drink now. Score – 90. (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Nov. 25, 2018)

2016 Arboleda Single Vineyard cab

I last wrote up the the 2015 and the 2017 vintage of this wine, sorry out of order,  and enjoyed them. This bodes well for consistency in this fine wine. This one is dark in color with a nice dark cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with some lovely vibrant fruit. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth acidity and tannins. This is an enjoyable lovely cab, nice and dry, yumm. I would give it an 88+. I didn’t get any of the herbaceous notes in the LCBO tasting.

Dark in color with a nice red berry nose. On the mid palate there’s some nice red fruits coming through. But like most Nebbiolos where this wine lives is in the finish where it displays nice super firm tannins, lovely dryness and complexity. It’s palate coating and builds nicely in the mouth. Yumm … I would give it an 88+. Sadly not in the LCBO but available by the case from Nicholas Pearce Wines for $29.95 a bottle in cases of 12, which is a very good deal for this wine. Small Gully The Formula Robert’s

My taste buds have ebbed and flowed on Shiraz, I’m kinda in a meh phase on them. This one was on sampling at the LCBO by me so I grabbed one. Dark in color with a nice black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice juicy, jammy black berries to match the nose, almost blueberries. On the lighter side of medium length finish the wine displays some soft tannins and pepper. This is largely a fruit forward wine. While the sugar content is quite low, it still has an air of sweetness to it. I would give it an 87-88. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it either. I look for something bigger in the finish for shirazs.

Beauvignac Picpoul de Pinet 2018

This was a gift from a friend, Greg, I admit to not being familiar with this grape PIQUEPOUL Pale in color with a mild citrus nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft citrus notes to match the nose. The medium length finish the wine displays some nice lively palate coating acidity and minerality that lives on nicely in the mouth. There’s an air or two of flavors I couldn’t place well. Balbás Reserva 2006

Inky dark in color with a black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some vibrant black berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some HUGE tannins, smooth palate coating dryness and some mocha notes. This is a BIG tempranillo. Straight out of the bottle the wine displays some green notes that eased quickly, it’s a little young. 6 months would make a HUGE difference. For now I would give it an -88 but with could easily improve to an 88+ …

Arboleda Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This is my third year writing up this wine and it continues to delight and surprise me. Wines like this I credit with changing my opinion on Chilean cabs! Nice and dark in color with a rich bold red cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine spot on matches the nose with lovely rich varietal red cherries. To my tastes this reminds me a lot of California cabs which I love. On the medium length finish the wine displays lovely tannins, acidity and dryness. Super food friendly. Yumm 88+. Which for the price is again an awesome deal. Last time around I bought probably almost a case of this by the time they run of it in the LCBO 🙂

2017 Inniskillin Reserve Chard

I love chards, perfect pairing for scallops. Yum, a decadent meal for sure. Sometimes as I’m walking out of the Metro I pop into the WineRack store, which is where I grabbed this one. Casal de Ventozela Branco Vinho Verde 2017

I don’t know Vinho Verde well but a colleague Greg was telling me about them so I thought I’d give it a whirl. Pale in color with a citrus nose. On the mid palate the wine has some noticeable effervescence, you can even see bubbles in the glass. There’s some nice green notes, maybe green apple, maybe lime, I struggled to place it to be honest. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp citrus and vibrant acidity. The effervescence through me off a little, I wasn’t expecting it. The wine is a lot drier to my tastes than 7g/l would imply. I would give the wine an -88. And given the price, definitely worth a try.

Sarl Champagne William Saintot Cuvee Seduction Champagne mini review

Every year I give my nieces a treat at Christmas, a bottle of Pol Roger champagne for them to have a magical New Years eve … I recently attended a tasting of this champagne and was suitably impressed. The bottle is a little less than but the flavors are impeccable. Pale in color with a nice apple and pear nose. On the mid palate this is a lovely vibrant champage with apple/pear and loads of minerality coming through. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with citrus notes and minerality coating the palate beautifully. This is a smooth elegant yummy champagne. It doesn’t come cheap, but if your looking for something special this just might fit the bill. I would give it an 89-90. It’s 55% chard from 2015, and 45% 2014.  6.5g/l!

Fontanafredda Langhe Nebbiolo 2017

Nebbiolo is the grape used in Barolos and Barbarescos, and when they are simply referred to by the grape as this one is, you can sometimes get some bargains. This one is dark in color with a nice red berry nose. Straight out of the bottle the alcohol is super noticeable. I chose to decant it and this helped a lot. I think the wine is just a little young. On the medium length finish this wine displays some lovely tannins and acidity that coat the mouth in typical Nebbiolo form. For the price this is a good wine and it can hold it’s own with pretty lively meals. We paired it with a red sauce spaghetti and it went well! I would give it an -88 or so.

Made from the Nebbiolo grape of Barolo and Barbaresco fame, this wine is grown in limestone-rich hillside vineyards and matured in oak for eight months. It’s solidly structured, balanced and quite elegant, with plenty of tangy red fruit character. A nice choice for cured meats and firm cheeses. (Vintages panel, July 2018)

Clayhouse Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Dark in color with a mild cherry nose. This wine is of two profiles, with and without food. Without food the wine displays some nice vibrant cherries to match the nose along with some nice mocha notes, and a hint of oak. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dryness, smooth tannins and nice acidity. With food it’s a lot softer so this is a food friendly wine but it needs to be something on the milder side. I paired it with lasagna and honestly it overwhelmed it. Salmon would seem like the perfect pairing. I would give it an 88 or so. A perfect sipping wine.

Swartland Winemaker’s Collection Chenin Blanc 2018

Pale in color with a honey suckle nose. On the mid palate the displays some sharp acidity, some smokey/flinty notes and some minerality. This is an odd/funky chenin. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice mouth grip and citrus notes the grow. I would give it an 87-88. I bought two and will be returning the second. I’m underwhelmed.

This one is perfumed and pretty with orange blossom, tropical fruit and spice notes wrapped in a creamy mouthfeel. A great value and a lovely choice for carnitas or pork chops. 2015 Ménage à Trois Decadence Cabernet Sauvignon

I was wandering through my local LCBO and they were sampling this wine, I tried it and liked it enough to buy a bottle. I have to turn my reaction off to the silly name to even consider this wine, but I’ve been impressed by their chard … On sale right now for $2 off. Dark in color with an expressive cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with fruit forward cherry notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and acidity. It’s not as sweet as you might expect from 8g/l. The LCBO call it full bodied and smooth … too my tastes it’s a lot more fruit forward than this would imply. I would give it an -88. This is a general list product.
