Bodega Fin del Mundo Neuquén Gran Reserva 2015

Dark in color with a nice dark berry nose. On the mid palate at first there’s some nice dark berry fruits that start to come through and then you get whacked almost immediately by firm tannins, edgy acidity, some green notes and some strong black pepper. All these flavors linger in the mouth on a long finish, there’s also some strongly noticeable alcohol. This wine is WAY to young. I would say it needs a minimum of 2 years of aging or perhaps you could try decanting or aerating the wine. The fruit that’s there given some aging will come through, but you will need some patience. For now I would give it an 87+ but there’s potential …

The bottle says it’s 34% Cab Sauv, 25% Malbec, 24% Cab franc and 17% Merlot.

Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay 2017

Pale to slightly golden in color with a nice apple/pear varietal nose … On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with lovely elegant pear and apple along with some nice vanilla notes. The wine displays some nice creamy texture. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with crisp acidity. This is a beautiful, varietal, oaked chard, just the way I like them. We paired it with pan fried sea scallops and brussel sprouts and it went perfectly. It was a meal made in heaven or at least by me 🙂 I would give this a 90. Yumm. This wine should keep quite nicely as well 2-5 years would probably be no issue at all. Be sure and serve it not to cold to appreciate it’s complexity.

2017 Meiomi Pinot Noir

Dark in color wine a mild red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays more cherry notes than I would expect out of a Pinot. On the medium length finish the wine displays some acidity and tannins. Honestly to my tastes this is NOT a varietal Pinot noir. It’s not a bad wine, just not what I expect out of a Pinot. Even the color gave this away … I would give it an 87-88. I wouldn’t be rushing out to grab any, even at this lowered price. (They dropped the price $5).

Castelgreve Riserva Chianti Classico 2013

I last enjoyed the 2016 Chianti Classico from this winery and loved it, so when I saw this one, I figured the Riserva is only going to be better … Oops. Dark in color with a mild red berry nose with some oak coming through on the mid palate the wine matches the nose with some mild red fruits and a lot of woody/earthy/oaky notes. The fruit on this wine is quite subdued and overwhelmed by the oaking. On the medium length finish there’s some dried fruit notes, some mild tannins and acidity. While not a bad wine, it’s not a great one to my tastes and honestly, the non Riserva was a lot better. I would give it an 87-88. I bought 4 and haven’t decided if I’m going to take them back or not …

Pale in color with a mild nose, some stone fruits. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft stone fruits to patch the nose. Some mild peach along with some nice acidity and minerality. Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc 2017

I like my Chenin’s dry rather than sweet. This one caught my eye at 3g/l. Pale in color with a nice mild minerally nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some soft minerality along with a hint of honeysuckle. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice acidity that lingers in the mouth. Not a bad chenin at all. I would give it an 87-88. Not awful but not awesome by any stretch. I would give it an -88

A wine of tremendous character and depth for the money, this is yet another superlative value from Ken Forrester. Partake non alcoholic beer

I attended the recent Toronto Wine and Spirits festival and these guys were there sampling there non alcoholic craft brewed beer. If your like me, and these guys it seems, you’ve been underwhelmed by the non alcoholic beers. Why would you want a non alcoholic beer? Well maybe you decide to give your liver a break for a day or two but would still enjoy the taste? I’ve tried two of their offerings at this point the Pale which is available at the LCBO and the Blonde which is available at the Beer store. The Pale is a little more hoppy and bitter than the blond at an IBU of 10 while the Pale is 8. I preferred the Pale, just more to my tastes but both are quite flavorful and give no indication your drinking a non alcoholic beer. At only 0.3% alcohol, and only 15 calories there’s a surprising amount of flavor! I tried the get some of the beer at the beer store only to arrive and find out their online stock was wrong. So I gave up and ordered it directly from the brewery They delivered it quickly and right to my door by Canada Post. Obviously if you can get it at your local beerstore then it’s cheaper simply because they don’t have to ship it to your door. Price wise I paid $55 for a 24, so $2.30 a can.

According to Chelsea from Partake brewing it is legal to drink these anywhere you would a soda or a bottle of water! Way cool! This by the way was confirmed by the Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario who said ” Any beverage containing over 0.5% alcohol is considered an alcoholic beverage and would not be legal to drink in public without appropriate permits. ”

Tawse Growers Blend Pinot Noir 2016

Niagara makes some wonderful Pinot Noirs. So much so I have trouble accepting supporting ones from other places, especially at even higher prices. This one is beautifully garnet in color with a nice soft red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely strawberry fruits, nice and firm. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely vibrant acidity and some nice tannins. This is an elegant well made varietal pinot. The price is creeping up there, but this one is worth it. Yumm. I’d give it an 88+. We paired it with some BBQ trout and it was a little piece of ratatouille in the mouth. I’ve also had the Growers blend Cab Franc and been impresed.

A lightly-hued red in the glass, it offers delicate aromas of piquant spice, cedar and raspberry on the nose. It streaks over the palate with tang, tart and acidity borne of crunchy red fruit flavours – currant, pie cherry and passionfruit – along with wisps of sharp spice. I enjoyed the tart acidity and am confident that with a pasta in tomato sauce, red pizza or lasagne pairing, most others will, too. Score – 90. (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Nov. 17, 2018)

Collavini T Friulano 2017

I picked this one up on a whim, with no research. I saw that it was nice and dry and I’ve enjoyed wines from the Friulano region so what the heck. Pale in color with a nice crisp minerally nose. The wine spot on matches the nose with lots of super crisp, dry minerality, maybe some citrus/lime. Honestly I had some challenges picking out the flavors. On the medium length finish the vibrant acidity, minerality and citrus coat the mouth. This is on the verge of bitter and edgy to some. I would give it an -88. You could easily pair this with alfredo, seafood or other hearty foods and it will hold it’s own. A very nice wine. The LCBO say light and crisp? On what planet?

2016 Arboleda Single Vineyard cab

I last wrote up the the 2015 and the 2017 vintage of this wine, sorry out of order,  and enjoyed them. This bodes well for consistency in this fine wine. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth acidity and tannins. This is an enjoyable lovely cab, nice and dry, yumm. I would give it an 88+. I didn’t get any of the herbaceous notes in the LCBO tasting.

Dark in color with a nice red berry nose. On the mid palate there’s some nice red fruits coming through. But like most Nebbiolos where this wine lives is in the finish where it displays nice super firm tannins, lovely dryness and complexity. It’s palate coating and builds nicely in the mouth. Yumm … I would give it an 88+. Sadly not in the LCBO but available by the case from Nicholas Pearce Wines for $29.95 a bottle in cases of 12, which is a very good deal for this wine. Small Gully The Formula Robert’s

My taste buds have ebbed and flowed on Shiraz, I’m kinda in a meh phase on them. This one was on sampling at the LCBO by me so I grabbed one. Dark in color with a nice black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice juicy, jammy black berries to match the nose, almost blueberries. On the lighter side of medium length finish the wine displays some soft tannins and pepper. This is largely a fruit forward wine. While the sugar content is quite low, it still has an air of sweetness to it. I would give it an 87-88. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it either. I look for something bigger in the finish for shirazs.

Arboleda Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This is my third year writing up this wine and it continues to delight and surprise me. Wines like this I credit with changing my opinion on Chilean cabs! This Nomad is something to write home about, especially when paired with roast beef sandwiches and grainy mustard. (Vintages panel, Sept. 2018)

Matahiwi Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Pale in color with a nice citrus and grassy nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some firm citrus notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm acidity. The citrus and acidity coats the mouth beautifully. If your looking for a soft gentle elegant sauv blanc … this ain’t it. It’s an edgy vibrant classic New Zealand sauv blanc, just the way I like it. Yumm I’d give it an 88+.

Dark in color with a mild dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice varietal dark berry notes to match the nose. On the medium length finish there’s some nice pepper, spice and tannins. It’s a nice smooth approachable Cab franc. I would give it an -88. It’s nice and dry with smooth acidity. This has quite a lot going on. There’s nice intensity to the ripe red fruit tones, and they have plenty of support from sweet spice, chocolate, vanilla, sandalwood and leather notes. Long, rich, rounded and lithe. Try this with barbecued sausages, grilled pork chops, or a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. (Vintages panel, Sept. 2018)

Cavino Nemea Grande Reserve 2012

Inky dark in color with a nice black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice vibrant black fruits to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dusty tannins and some in balance acidity. The wine straight out of the bottle displayed some noticeable alcohol but this subsided quickly. This is a bigger wine, so be careful what you pair it with . We paired it with striploins and it went very well. I would give it an 88 or so. Quite nice and spot on for this lovely, hearty greek varietal.

2017 Inniskillin Reserve Chard

I love chards, perfect pairing for scallops. Yum, a decadent meal for sure. Sometimes as I’m walking out of the Metro I pop into the WineRack store, which is where I grabbed this one. This chard is golden in color with a nice apple/pear nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with nice apple and pear along with some nice vanilla notes. This is particular cahrd is not over oaked at all, slightly creamy in texture. On the medium length finish the wine has some nice smooth food friendly acidity and the vanilla builds nicely in the mouth. I would give it an -88 or so. Which for $20.95 is not a bad deal at all!
