Castelli del Grevepesa Castelgreve Chianti Classico 2016

Dark in color with a nice cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely dark cherries. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with smooth tannins and some nice oaky notes. This is a classic chianti classico! I would give it an 88 or so, which for the price is great. We paired it with lamb chops and it’s got enough going on to hold up to the lamb! Very nice, and has been consistent over a number of vinatges!

2014 Stratus Kabang Red

Kabang is a restaurant only brand for Stratus. We found it at the Keg, and decided to take a flyer on it … the price was quite reasonable. This is a lovely wine … Smooth, elegant, food friendly and a perfect choice for the steak we had coming, a blue cheese filet … On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and acidity. There’s even a hint of mocha there as well. I would give the wine an 88+. Yumm ….

Arboleda Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

I last reviewed the 2014 and was thoroughly impressed, actually I would put it amongst the best Chilean cabs … This one is nice and dark in color with a nice dark berry nose. The mid palate spot on matches the nose with nice black cherries coming through. On the mid palate the wine is nice and dry, smooth, good tannins and acidity. You could easily close your eyes and imagine this being a California cab, which to my tastes is a complement … I would give this wine a solid -89 which for the price is an excellent deal. For the 2014 I went back and grabbed a number and they kept pretty well. I’ve bought a number again … Yumm!

Esterházy Galántha Grüner Veltliner 2017

I love Grüners, they are nice crisp, dry and food friendly. We don’t get a lot here in Ontario … This one is pale in color with a mild citrus nose. On the mid palate right out of the fridge the wine displays some noticeable citrus notes. as the wine warmed up the lemon notes became more subtle leaving some nice green apple notes. On the medium length finish the wine has some lovely crisp dry minerality. This is a lovely varietal Grüner, but, be sure and not serve it too cold or you will miss out on lovely complexity of this wine. It has some very nice mouth grip. We served it with pan fried perch and the wine went well, not overwhelming the subtle flavors of the perch. The LCBO say light and crisp, well that would be true if served too cold …

This is a lovely expression of what the county can bring to the table. I would give the wine an 88+. It’s $29.95 at the winery. And if your in the county be sure and visit, it’s a lovely place!

2015 Sumac Ridge Cab/Merlot

I had the pleasure of spending some time in Alberta recently and it’s proximity to BC means you get some of the Okanagan wines we rarely see in Ontario. I’ve had Sumac ridge wines before and been impressed so I grabbed this one. The liquor stores are a lot more privatized in BC … Dark in color with a lovely black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely black cherry notes along with some nice chocolate/mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays lovely smooth tannins and nice acidity. There’s also some nice earthy notes common with Okanagan wines. This is a nice, approachable, food friendly wine. I quite enjoyed it. I would give it an 88 or so. Sadly not in Ontario, but it was just under $20 in Alberta.

From the winery’s web site:
Harvest Report: The hot dry summer of 2015 led to the earlies harvest for us in the Okanagan Valley. This vintage saw some concerns due to the fires in the area as well as in Washington
State. No ill effects were seen from these events as the smoke came and went in a matter of days. Harvest proceeded, and the cool fall nights helped to enhance the varietal
flavours. All in all, 2015 was an outstanding harvest. The fruit was harvested early October and fermented in stainless steel for about 10 days. Increased flavour and colour extraction was achieved by pumping the wine over twice daily. The ferementation was allowed to go to 30C. The wine was pressed off and then it went through malolactic fermentation. Aged in a blend of French and American oak for about 6 months. 45% Merlot 35% Cab Franc and 20% Cab Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: Purple ruby colour with aromas of blackberry, dark plum and juicy oak. Flavours of dark berrry and dark plum layered with mocha and vanilla accents. Soft, approachable tannins and well balacned acidity lead to medium long finish Great with lasagna, roast lamb, sauteed mushrooms and aged cheddar cheese

Louis Jadot Chablis 2015

Pale in color with a mild apple/pear nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice vibrant fruit, apple and pear to match the nose. On the light finish … ah there just isn’t much. The LCBO describe it as light and crisp. I’m sorry, for $32.95 I expect something more than light and crisp. This is at best a lightly oaked chard. Louis Jadot is long known as a negoticient (meaning they buy grapes from other growers) and the web site is little help as to where the source of these grapes are. The best you can glean from the winery’s web site is “This wine is fermented in vats and then aged in the Louis Jadot cellars between 9-12 months before bottling.” I would give this an 87+. If you have lots of money to burn … ya go out and grab this wine, otherwise … PASS.

2017 Trius Cab Franc

I was wandering out of the grocery store and grabbed this one, solely for convenience. I hadn’t noticed it was a 2017, I guess it didn’t spend a lot time (if any) in Oak? Dark in color with a fruity cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with fruity cherry notes to match the nose. I’d love to rave about this wine, but it’s a disappointing fruit bomb. The kind of wine a friend shares with you that they made themselves and you smile and say how good it is 🙂 On the lighter finish the wine displays some mild tannins. I would give this wine at best an 86-87. If I had more I’d take it back. Now the only question is whether I dump the bottle (sorry fish) and not ruin the food, or endure. Either way, don’t buy this wine … yuk. ~$15

I always have difficulty describing cab franc’s eloquently. They are a unique flavor and this is a good one … On the medium length finish the wine displays smooth tannins, nice dryness and smooth acidity. This is a super food friendly, elegant approachable cab franc. Not as edgy as some, not as complex but very nice. I would give it an 88 or so …

Tasting Notes:
Classic cab franc with dark berry fruit notes and a hint of green herbs, crack black pepper and smoke. This will be a great BBQ wine for the season to come!

Peer Review:
“Prince Edward County wineries do Cabernet Franc well – and the Grange is no exception. A lovely medium bodied wine with aromas of red cherry, smoke, leather and tobacco. Tannins are present but not overwhelming. The perfect trio of fruit, tannins and acidity. Grown on a plateau on the deepest soils at the winery that once grew alfalfa. 36 months in neutral oak. The Grange is consistently using neutral oak to let the fruit shine through. A lovely dry – 2.3 g/l sugar medium bodied wine.” – Lori Killmartin

2015 Huff South Bay Vineyards Merlot

I haven’t been out to the county wineries since 2009 so as part of a road trip we stopped in for a couple of days. We stayed at the Waring house centrally located. It was shocking how the Warning house has grown. This wine was on their by the bottle offerings so I choose it to go with the striploin I had chosen for dinner. Inky dark in color with a super inviting dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays lovely vibrant dark berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays lovely smooth tannins and acidity. The wine has some fabulous mouth grip and roundness to the wine. This wine, is hands down, the best County red I’ve ever had. It was super yummy. I would give it an 89 or so. I went back to the winery and grabbed 3 of them it was THAT good. Wow. This bodes really well for the county. At this time there is only one appellation from VQA for the whole county. This particular vineyard is on the other side of the county from Huff estates. Not in the LCBO, but if you get a chance to grab one, you will be handsomely rewarded $35 at the winery. I seem to recall it was about $53 at Waring house … Not a bad markup at all.

From the winery’s web site:
TASTING NOTES
Cherry-garnet in colour, our ’15 merlot infuses the nostrils with a compliment of savoury-herbal-spice complexity, floral hints of violet supported by a beckoning mist of black fruit (currant, cassis). Behold a generous mouth-feel of woodland fruit nestled over earthy notes with a tannic weave that will unfurl with bottle age. Talk about luxury without excess: a Merlot concerto.

FOOD PAIRINGS
Meats – duck, pork, veal, venison, rabbit and braised beef

Cheese – brie, camembert, sharp cheddar, gorgonzola and blue veins.

Frey 2017 Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) mini review

Grauburgunder is the German name for Pinot Gris. This one is pale in color with a mild peach nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with soft stone fruit and peach notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp and dry minerality. This is a lovely varietal pinot gris, a perfect food friendly, summer wine. I would give it an 88 or so. Sadly not in the LCBO, and as of now, Frey don’t even have a rep in Ontario, but I point this wine out as a hopeful example of what may eventually come! It’s currently $4EUR …

Meiser 2016 Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) mini review

At the most recent Wines of Germany event in Toronto I had the opportunity to taste, and expand my experience with German wines. Most people know German Rieslings and gewurztraminer, but more and more I’ve had the joy of tasting German Spätburgunders which is the German name for Pinot Noir. And Germany are making some very good ones! Great news, for fans of this grape, of which I am one. Soft red berry nose … on the mid palate the wine displays some lovely soft juicy, vibrant red fruits, strawberries and the like. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice acidity, nice tannins and a hint of black pepper. The wine is quite complex living on nicely in the mouth. Definitely a bigger pinot. I would give the wine an 88+. Probably one of my favorite wines of the tasting. Yumm. And now for the bad news … sadly not in the LCBO, but available by the case from Wine lover’s agency.

From the winery:
2016 Pinot Noir
Germany > Rheinhessen > – No subregion
The Spätburgunder Weinheimer Hölle tastes full-bodied and velvety and havs a fruity aroma and hints of almond. This typical Pinot Noir has a slightly sweet scent of red fruits, from cherry to blackberry and blackcurrant.
