Arboleda Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Inky dark in color with a nice vibrant cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with nice dark cherries coming through along with some oak. I previously reviewed the 2008 vintage of this wine and loved it. This vintage is not as bold as the 2008, but still quite good. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely smooth tannins, dryness and acidity. This is a lovely wine. I would give it an 88+ and very varietal. Given the tannins I would say it should keep quite nicely. This is spot on varietal to my tastes. The LCBO call it full bodied and firm and I would whole heartedly agree!

Wakefield Pinot Noir 2016

On the mid palate the wine displays some varietal pinot noir notes to match the nose, some light red berries along with a hint of black berries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some slight peppery notes, some smooth tannins and some nice dryness. This is a good pinot noir, but not a great one. Medium bodied and fruity is how the LCBO describe it and I would agree. I won’t rush back to get more … I would give it an -88

2014 Pepper Tree Merlot mini review

Sorry to be a little slow on the updates. Life’s been a bit busy. Dark in color with a dark berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some bold dark fruits and some plum. On the medium length finish the wine displays nice tannins. I would give it an 88 or so. $22.95 coming to the LCBO in Vintages Nov 11th.

From the winery’s web site:
2015 VARIETAL MERLOT Wrattonbully
Merlot 100%

MATURATION
Individual blocks machine harvested once flavour ripe and destemmed, sorted in the vineyard. The fruit is chilled at the winery and cold soaked for four days before being inoculated. Fermented with M2 yeast in static fermenters for 10-14 days before being pressed off skins. Wines are then racked to oak for 18 months maturation before blending and bottling.

VINEYARD / SOIL
Wrattonbully adjoins the Coonawarra area in the southern part of the Limestone Coast wine zone. The prominent viticultural feature of the area is the series of ancient beach ridges and dunes which run roughly north-south through the area. These ridges are made up of soft crumbly limestone which weathers to produce the red and brown Terra Rossa clay loam soils so highly prized for grape growing. The ridges and dunes have elevations of up to 30m compared with the Coonawarra Terra Rossa ‘high’ of less than 5m. The extra elevation on the Wrattonbully dunes produce the advantage of cold air drainage which reduces the risk of frost during the growing season.

BOTTLING DATE April 2017

BOTTLING SPECIFICATION pH: 3.43 TA: 6.7 g/l Alc/Vol: 13.9%

NOTES
An enticing nose of dark plum and red fruits with a spicy lift. The rich, soft palate is rounded with sweet berry fruits and savoury spice. Balanced by subtle oak, the fine tannins provide good length for a silky finish.

2015 Dalrymple Pinot noir mini review

Garnet in color with a lovely varietal nose. On the mid palate the wine displays the usual soft red berries and some nice rustic notes. This is a spot on varietal pinot … On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice firm acidity and tannins. This is a lovely well made pinot. I would give it an -89 Not in the LCBO but available for $42.95 a bottle. Very nice.

From the winery’s web site:
Pinot Noir 2015
CRUSHED BOYSENBERRY • CINNAMON • VIOLETS
Vintage was characterized by a cool to mild spring followed by an early summer with above average rainfall. Yields were average to above average and well matched for ripening with a healthy canopy. Conditions changed just prior to harvest in March, and a mild to warm air system settled over Tasmania. We experienced only blue skies and mild temperatures, perfect for ripening and maintaining the fine acid that had developed through the cooler months. A blend of Pinot Noir parcels from our own vineyard at Pipers River, Coal River Valley and our grower in the Upper Derwent Valley. Each of these sites is unique with distinctive individual terroirs, building complexity into the final wine blend. Each of the different parcels of fruit from across the vineyard sites were picked on their merit. Fermentation started after 2-3 days with plunging of the cap to extract colour and tannin from the skins. The wine was pressed at completion of fermentation and settled before being placed into French oak barriques, where malolactic fermentation took place, prior to filtration and bottling. A brilliant purple-red colour that shines in the glass. Aromas of violets, crushed boysenberry and blackberry with hints of roasted cinnamon, clove and green pepper. A balanced mid palate leads to a fine tannin finish with spices and length supported by French oak. Although fresh and appealing
in its youth, the 2015 will reward cool cellaring for 8-12 years for those looking to enjoy the full complexity of fine Pinot Noir over time.

FOOD MATCH : Peking duck pancakes or for something different, warm apple pie.

On the medium length finish the wine displays some smooth tannins and dryness. This has a bit of everything in it, not a bad wine. We paired it with steaks and it held it’s own, and went well with chocolate cookies for dessert! I would give it an -88 which for the price is not bad.

Pinot Grigio Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2015 (mini review)

Pale in color with a lovely crisp nose, with some nice minerality coming through. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with some lovely crisp citrus notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely vibrant acidity that lives on nicely in the mouth. This would be a super food friendly wine. I would give it an 88-89, very nice. Not in the LCBO but $19.95 a bottle. I couldn’t find the supplier in Ontario 🙁

From the winery’s web site for a different year:
Pinot Grigio Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2016
Made from 100% Pinot Grigio, this wine radiates youthfulness and purity of fruit. This is achieved through stainless steel fermentation and the use of a cork-free closure.

Wine Production
Temperature-controlled fermentation at 68 °F in steel tanks; four-month aging on the fine lees in concrete vats prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes
Straw yellow in color with lemon highlights, this Pinot Grigio is youthful and lively. On the nose, this wine has aromas of citrus, white flowers, pears, apples, and meadow grass. Up-front citrus flavors give way to stony minerality and a crisp finish.

Food Pairing
Wonderful as an apperativ as well as a wine that will pair well with butter-poached fish, scampi’s, and pasta primavera.

2015 Vignamaggio Monna Lisa Chianti Classico (mini review)

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some varietal Chianti flavors, red berries and the like. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and some lovely dryness. This is a surprisingly complex wine for the price. I was suitably impressed and will grab a bottle for a more in depth tasting of this wine. I would give it an 88 or so. 2014 Chateau Capbern

This is another one from my Bordeaux futures order. Inky dark in color with a lovely expressive nose with lots of dark berries coming through. On the mid palate there’s some nice black fruits but they are smacked almost immediately by firm overwhelming tannins and strong acidity. This wine is BIG and way too young. I did what I never do to Bordeaux, I passed it through an aerator and decanted it. This made a huge difference and left a lovely wine. The fruit got a chance to shine! I would say this needs a min of 2 years aging, and will likely keep a long time 5-10 years conservatively. Once decanted I would give it an -89. But it was missing some of the depth and complexity I look for in a wine in the price point, but that may have been because of the aerating/decanting.

from the LCBO web site:
CAPBERN Cellar Starter 427401 (XD) 750mL

TASTING NOTE: Really fine florality, fragrance, length and grip from 78% Cabernet Sauvignon – more airy than earthy and beautifully expressive. Drink: 2018-2028. (Steven Spurrier) Score:90 (DEC)

On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins, and acidity along with some nice dryness. A lovely varietal cab. Very food friendly. 2014 Peacock Sky Merlot/Malbec (mini review)

Inky dark in color with a nice blackberry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays traditional Malbec notes with blackberry dominating. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice tannins, and some slight pepper and spice. A nice wine, I’d give it an 88 or so. Not in the LCBO but available for $47+HST a bottle from Apparition Wines.

From the winery’s web site (for a different year):
Our 2013 Merlot Malbec was awarded 4 stars (Silver Medal standard) by Winestate magazine, who had this to say:

“Dark, rich blend of merlot (84%) and Malbec (16%). Weighty and firmly structured, with concentrated blackcurrant and plum flavours, hints of dried herbs and spices, and obvious cellaring potential.”

A classic blend from our estate grown fruit. Nicely perfumed, with solid palate weight supported by well balanced oak. A satisfying wine with intense colour, and a pleasant, long finish. Alcohol by volume 14.1%

Pale in color with a nice crisp dry nose … On the mid palate the wine delivers a lovely crisp dry Sauv blacn with nice lemon and grassy notes coming through. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp tartness, maybe a hint of grapefruit and some nice acidity. A lovely food friendly wine. I paired it with a cream sauce seafood ravioli and it went perfectly I would give it an 88 or so. Sadly not in the LCBO 🙂 Looks like it’s carried by Lifford for $23.25 a bottle. 2015 Azul cab Sauv (mini review)

On the mid palate the wine has a lovely, expressive dark cherry taste to match the nose along with some hints of mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays some subtle tannins and acidity. This would be a super food friendly wine for dishes like red sauce based pasta, or salmon. I would give it an 88+. Not in the LCBO but available in cases of 12 for $26 a bottle from Apparition Wines. Flat Rock have been consistently, quietly making varietal Pinot Noirs for a long time now. This one is no exception. Garnet in color with nice soft red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice soft red berries to match the nose. Think raspberry and strawberry notes along with some rustic flavors. On the medium length finish the wine displays some soft tannins and acidity. This is a soft well made pinot. If your looking for a gentle wine to compliment something like salmon, or a wine that is a good introduction to Pinot Noir this is an excellent choice. I would give it an -88. The price is starting to creep up there. If you want something with a little more complexity on the finish checkout Flat Rock’s Gravity Pinot Noir.

2014 Chateau Senejac

I recently decided to try something I hadn’t done before, buy a Bordeaux future. This is one of those. You buy them in advance of their release based on barrel tasting. Dark in color with a lovely cab dominating nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some beautiful rich dark berries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some beautiful rich tannins and acidity. This is a smooth well made, not edgy Bordeaux. I paired it with rack of lamb and it went perfectly. And dessert was of course a chocolate chip cookie. Yum. I would give the wine a solid 89. Which for $22 is well worth it. Fortunately I bought 4!!!!

Haut-Médoc – Red Wine

SÉNÉJAC Cellar Starter 426668 (XD) 750mL
TASTING NOTE: The Château Sénéjac 2014 has a fresh, lively bouquet, those energetic blackberry and boysenberry fruit leaping from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and tones it down a little. But there is commendable energy here, well-judged acidity and plenty of blackberry and raspberry fruit on the finish that linger long in the mouth. This comes recommended. Drink: 2018-2028. Score: 89-91 (RP)

2014 Kingston Shiraz (mini review)

Inky dark in color with a mild black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice smooth black berry to match the nose. Not quite blueberry. On the medium length finish the wine has smooth tannins and acidity. There’s next to no pepper on this one, to my tastes this is more of a Syrah in style. It’s super food friendly. I would give it an 88 or so. Sadly not in the LCBO. Another one off the wine list at Lord Nelsons.

From the winery’s website:
2014 SHIRAZ
CLARE VALLEY & MT BENSON
COLOUR: Deep crimson with purple hues
BOUQUET: Wonderful blackberry and pepper spice with a hint of fruitcake and menthol.
PALATE: Superbly full bodied with layers of lush dark berry and plum fruit with subtle pepper and eucalypt nuances. A smooth restrained finish is balanced by the soft tannin structure and lingering spice.
CUISINE: Perfectly paired with barbecued foods, richly flavoured meats and game birds.
CELLARING
Under ideal conditions will develop further flavour complexity to 5
years.
Alcohol – 14.5% Alc/Vol
The warm Clare Valley climate provides lush dark berry fruit characters, whilst the cooler ripening conditions of the Mount Benson fruit provide berry flavours and varietal elegance. The grapes were harvested at optimum night temperatures and Baume with individual vineyard selections kept seperately
throughout. Ferment temperatures started at –20°C then were all owed to peak at 28-29°C and conducted in small static fermenters before being drained and pressed from skins then allowed to finish alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Maturation was in French and American Oak.

2014 Humble Pie cab sauv

Dark in color with a nice smooth black cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine is a spot on Cali cab with lots of lovely black cherries coming through. Not super fruity, not too sweet, just right. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and acidity. A super food friendly wine. I paired it with pan fried veal in a mushroom sauce and it went well. I would give it an 88-89. I had it off the by glass menu at Lord Nelson’s in Burlington. Not in the LCBO sadly.

From the winery’s web site:
HUMBLE PIE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014 USD$14.99
The 2014 Humble Pie Cabernet hails from four vineyards in the Central Coast growing region. The majority of the grapes come from Hames Valley, which is known for being one of the warmer regions in the Central Coast, and the San Lucas appellation which has the highest diurnal temperature variations of any appellation in California.

WINEMAKING: The shale-and-loam soil, plus the above-average temperature in Hames Valley and San Lucas for the Central Coast, leads to a perfect growing region for this 100% cabernet. Our grapes were picked early in the morning before the rains came in late October. After being picked, the grapes were immediately sent to the winery where the wine was slowly fermented at a cool temperature and aged on French Oak for 10 months.

TASTING NOTES: Initial aromas are black currant, cherry, vanilla, white pepper and strawberry rise from the glass. Humble Pie has a wonderful acidity which carries flavors of black currant, vanilla bean, cedarwood and a hint of cigar.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Humble Pie is a perfect stand-alone wine; it will also pair well with hearty meat dishes and wild game.

APPELLATION: Central Coast, CA. WINEMAKER: Tony Leonardini
ALCOHOL: 13.9%

On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice acidity and mouth grip. it builds nicely in the mouth and would be VERY food friendly. from the winery’s web site:

2012 Peller Signature series sur lie Chardonnay

Slightly golden in color with lovely varietal nose with lots of pear and apple coming through. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with apple and pear dominating the mid palate. This is a lovely bold, expressive, varietal chard. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth vanilla and some slight creamyness. This is a smooth well made, not over baked chard. Yum. I would give it an 89 or so. I paired it with a sea bass and it was perfect! Did I mention yum? In case you want to read up on Sur de lie follow the link.

From the LCBO’s web site for a different year:
Peller Estates Signature Series Chardonnay Sur Lie 2013 — VINTAGES#: 383075
STYLE – Full-bodied & Rich
2012 was a massive year with much weight given to many Chardonnays – but here we have the more (for lack of a better term) delicate 2013 Sur Lie Chard – here the wine sees 30% new oak and 12 months on its ‘lies’ (pronounced ‘lees’ – aka: dead yeast cells) … the result is aromas of vanilla, butter, candied apple, grilled peach and green apple skins … palate is fresh, lively and fruit driven with the subtlety of apple, butterscotch and a nice spice on the finish. Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). (Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, April 19, 2016) $31.95

From the winery’s web site for a different year:
SIGNATURE SERIES CHARDONNAY SUR LIE 2014 $31.95 / BOTTLE
Our Signature Series Chardonnay ‘Sur Lie’ is harvested from selected premium vineyard sites within the Niagara Peninsula. The grapes are gently pressed to release the purest of juice, then barrel fermented and aged sur lie for 12 months in 100% French oak barrels (30% new oak).

This full-bodied Chardonnay has a slightly rich mouthfeel and just enough acidity to refresh. Flavours of tropical fruit and delicate notes of spice and toasty develop on the palate. The smooth finish lingers with spicy oak and grilled lemon. Enjoy this wine now through 2017.

Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15°C. If served too cold the beautiful bouquet and flavours will be muted. A perfect rich, luscious sipping wine or pair with mushroom risotto; creamy mushroom soup; baked butternut squash; grilled pork chops with Dijon and tarragon; delicate cream sauces on pasta tossed with smoked salmon or scallops; grilled firm fillets of fish on cedar plank; roasted game hen with pine nut stuffing; turkey pot pies.

Seven Falls Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Inky dark in color with a lovely nose of dark cherries. On the mid palate the wine displays bold rich dark cherries to match the nose. On the medium length finish this wine displays a lovely smooth acidity and tannins. And if that was the end of the review the wine would get strong accolades. But then it hit, an almost immediate and the worst allergic reaction I have ever encountered. A massive asthmatic reaction impacting my breathing. The wine on the back says contains sulphites which is known to cause such reactions but the levels present must be beyond anything I have ever encountered.
