Rivera Il Falcone Riserva Castel del Monte 2009

Dark in color with a nice fruity red berry nose. About the only thing fruity about this wine. On the mid palate the wine displays some red berry notes to match the nose along with some noticeable oak notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm tannins, nice dryness and lively acidity. The wine is a little young. I would give it an 88 or so …

Rivera Il Falcone Riserva Castel del Monte 2009
STYLE – Medium-bodied & Fruity
The 2009 Castel del Monte Il Falcone Riserva does a great job of highlighting the Nero di Troia element of this blend. The wine is composed of 70% Nero di Troia and 30% Montepulciano, but with this balanced vintage we get a better view of this special native grape of Puglia. The bouquet boasts a wild side with bramble, forest berry and pressed violets. Other aromatic components include toasted nut, licorice and tar. The tannins are softly polished and help to give the wine a silky texture. This may be the best vintage of Il Falcone Riserva that I have come across. Score – 93. 2012 Château Argadens Bordeaux

I last reviewed the 2011 which I only had a tasting of so I thought I would grab a bottle of it. The wine is a vinatges essential so available in many LCBO web stores. Dark in color with a nice dark berry nose. On the mid palatte the wine displays some rich dark berries to match the nose along with some oak notes, mocha and chocolate. On the medium length finish the wine lingers really nicely in the mouth along with some vibrant acidity, some nice smooth tannins and some nice dryness. There’s some nice complexity to the wine not common at this price point. This is a lovely, typical, varietal bordeaux. I would give it an 88+. Very nice and worth a go. But be sure and pair it with something hearty so it can stand up to the wine!

That single word distinguishes this tiny region from everything else in California. Mount Harlan provides California with just about our only window on the French claim about the importance of this bedrock to their great Burgundies. There are, to be sure, other calcareous areas, notably the shales of Paso Robles west side, but true limestone is not a California thing’ (Clark Smith, appellationamerica.com, May 12, 2009). Dark in color with a mild red cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice dried fruits and red cherry notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely smooth tannins, nice dryness and complexity. I would give it an 89, another perfect example of a Chianti classico. Two sisters 2015 Oaked chardonnay mini review

It’s not unusual for wineries to purchase grapes to broaden their offerings or simply to keep the production facilities busy. Idle equipment = lost revenue. It’s always a shame when these wineries purchase grapes from outside their appelation. Two sisters are doing some great work on their reds, only reds in fact are grown on the property. So they purchases the grapes for this chard from Beamsville from Daniel Lenko. They were quite up front about this, which I applaud. So right off the bat this wine is going to have to win me over past my biases … This wine spent 7 months in oak. Pale in color with a softer varietal nose of apple and pear. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with some lovely expressive apple and pear. Beautiful fruit. Oh oh, a chink in the armor is revealing itself. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely vanilla notes along with some smooth acidity. I like my chards and I have to say this is a good one. I would give it an 89+, very nice. Not over baked, not unoaked, just right. This is one of the better chards coming out of Niagara right now. Yumm

From the winery’s web site:
2015 CHARDONNAY $49.00
Hand-harvested and barrel fermented for 7 months in French oak, this Chardonnay has impressions of citrus fruit, yellow apple and grilled pineapple on the nose. With great weight balanced weight, there is an intricate backbone of minerality with expands to a creamy, floral finish. Great acidity throughout makes this an excellent candidate for the cellar.

2014 Peppoli Chianti Classico

A while back I did a writeup after a tasting of a bunch of chianti’s from Gabbiano. I learned lots about the region. This chianti classico has seen some time in oak, and then some bottle aging. Nothing specific on the bottle as to length of time in each. On the nose the wine displays some nice soft red berries. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with some lovely soft red berries along with some typical dried fruit flavors. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lively, bright acidity along with some nice smooth tannins and some smokey notes. A classic chianti, pun intended. I would give it an 88 or so. This is a vintages essential product so readily available. A perfect companion for pastas, pizzas or rabbit!

2014 Peller Signature series sauv blanc (mini review)

This sauv blanc has been aged in oak for 1 year. Most sauv blancs from New Zealand for example see no oak. In California an oaked sauv blanc is called a fume blanc. This one is pale in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some subtle citrus notes along with some nice minerality. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm and acidity and builds slightly in the mouth. This is definitely a more subdued sauv blanc, I suspect due to the oaking. I prefer mine a bit more edgy but it is a nice wine none the less and will be very food friendly. An easy sipper. I would give an 88- or so. It’s $30.20 at the winery.

from the winery’s web site (for the 2013 vintage):
Harvested from estate owned vinyeards and our long-standing growers in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Only premium free-run juice from Sauvignon Blanc grapes were used for full expression of the fruit. A small portion of the juice began spontaneous fermention using wild yeast from the vineyard, then aged in barrel (the wild yeast contributes to aromas and complexity). 80% of the juice was barrel fermented and aged sur lie for 12 months in 100% French oak barrels (new and older barrels) to develop a rich, complex mouthfeel. 20% of the juice was fermented in our concrete ‘Egg’ to enhance mouthfeel and texture, then transferred to barrel for aging.

Serve with grilled halibut with a barbecued corn salsa; smoked salmon and trout appetizers; creamy pasta dishes with smoked salmon and asparagus; buttered grilled asparagus; herbed roast chicken; smoked turkey; smoked cheeses. Enjoy lightly chilled at 14 to 16°C. Drink now through 2017.

From the LCBO web site:
Casas del Bosque Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2015 — VINTAGES#: 974717
STYLE – Aromatic & Flavourful
The best Chilean sauvignon blancs generally come from Casablanca Valley, which enjoys cooling influences from the Pacific coast at an altitude of 800 feet above sea level. Founded in 1993, the award-winning Casas del Bosque was one of the first wineries in the valley … Renowned winemaker Grant Phelps has worked at Casas del Bosque for more than 13 years and crafted this wine. Grapes were harvested at night to maintain the fruit’s full potential and acidity. In the cellar, grapes were gently pressed and allowed skin contact for four days. The majority of the wine was vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, and 4 percent of it was barrel-fermented to add texture and weight. In the glass, it offers aromas of kiwi, lime zest and a whiff of jalapeno. On the palate, taste grapefruit, guava, mineral undertones and an herbal character. Drink it as an aperitif or with oysters, turkey gumbo, artichokes, grilled fish, smoked salmon, salads and light cheeses. (Brenda Maitland, bestofneworleans.com, Nov. 30, 2015) $14.95

Chilcas 2013 chard mini review

Golden in color with a nice varietal nose of apple/pear. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely varietal chard fruit, apple and pear to match the nose along with some nice vanilla notes. This is a nicely oaked, not over baked chard. Yumm. I would give it an 88-89 another of the stars from the Chilean wine festival. Sadly not in the LCBO right not, $24.95 a bottle.
