BRIX AT HARVEST: 19.9°
ALCOHOL CONTENT: 12.5%
RESIDUAL SUGAR: 4 grams– dry
TOTAL PRODUCTION: 450 cases
TASTING NOTES
This Pinot Gris was sourced exclusively from our own vineyard beside the market on Fourth Avenue in the Creek Shores appellation. We chose to harvest two blocks of the Market vineyard at different times. The first, western block which had the greatest risk from humidity was picked first in mid-September and the eastern block was picked almost two weeks later. Hand-picked, the grapes were crushed and destemmed before spending a couple of hours on the skins to extract added complexity and aromatic intensity. The grapes were then pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel with fine lees to provide added richeness and creamy mouthfeel.

Enjoy over the next 3 years with white fish poached or baked with lemon butter, simple chicken dishes, creamy fresh cheeses, green vegetable or herb risotto or sweet garlic pork sausages. Serve lightly chilled rather than cold.

2013 Rodney Strong Sonoma Chardonnay

Nice golden color with a mild, varietal nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely apple and pear. The fruit is quite nice on this one. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice butterscotch and vanilla. The wine has a slight bit of creamyness to it. I would give the wine an 88-89. A very nice chard. The LCBO says Full bodied and rich, and I would whole heartily agree!

From the LCBO web site:
Rodney Strong Chardonnay 2013 — VINTAGES#: 226936
STYLE – Full-bodied & Rich
The 2013 Sonoma County Chardonnay is a blend of both estate fruit and locally farmed fruit that results in a wine that reflects the Sonoma County terroir. This wine was barrel fermented with lees stirring every month to give a nice aroma of ripe lemon and apple with a touch of toast. As you taste this wine you will enjoy the complexity of … lemon, apple, pineapple and pear with a background of various spices. It has perfect acidity and a nice lingering finish that leaves these same flavors on your palate. Due to this acidity and fruits you will find that this is a nice food wine that works well with seafood such as salmon and cod, particularly if they have been prepared with a spicy sauce or pesto. 2014 Whitehaven Sauv Blanc

Pale in color with nice mild grassy citrus nose. On the mid palate the wine spot on matches the nose with some nice grassy notes along with some nice citrus. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp acidity. This is a nice smooth varietal New Zealand Sauv blanc. Very food friendly. Not the boldest I’ve had but smooth. I’m not sure I would say it’s “light” as the LCBO describe it, but heh. I would give it an 88+. Quite nice. In case you go looking for this wine, it’s in the general list (not vintages).

2009 Simi Cab

Ok, biases up front, I love Cab sauvs, and Napa make some of my favs. I’ve had this one in my cellar since 2013 and decided to crack it and see how it’s keeping. I have another one in the cellar so wanted to see if I need to move up my deadline for when it ought to be drunk by. And nothing irritates me more than wasting a good bottle of wine by not drinking it soon enough … Onto the tasting, dark in color with lovely vibrat bright cherry nose. This one is leaping out of the glass waiting for me … On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely bold rich cherries to match the nose. It has kept REALLY well and is still holding it’s own. Not a sign that it’s approaching past due. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely firm tannins, nice dryness, a bit of pepper and a hint of oak too. The wine lingers beautifully dancing on the tongue leaving the fruit to make you just sit there and go yummm. And people give you this odd look like they just don’t get it. I would give this wine a solid 90. Not in the LCBO right now but here was the listing from when I bought it. I highly recommend you keep the notes from when you bought it for record keeping purposes. Be sure and sip this without food to start to appreciate the length of the finish. I had the 2012 vintage of this wine, but after how fabulous this one was, it didn’t make the grade. Just goes to show you wines really can vary year to year and the benefits of having a cellar. I wish I’d bought a case.

The feel is quite velvety given the heft and power here. The tannins declare their presence early and loudly but the intense fruit keeps pace until the very end of the long finish. The interplay is wonderful. A superbly balanced and structured wine. (VINTAGES panel, July 2013)

Thirty Bench 2013 Small lot pinot noir mini review

I love travelling down to Niagara, touring the wineries, meeting the enthusiastic people that make up the wine industry. I have to say, Thirty Bench is one of my least favorite. So much so I have skipped them many times. I’ve found the staff to be pretentious, the wines to be average and the price to be high. A poor combination indeed. But I decided it was time to give them another try. This time around we got an amazing, well informed, and personable server! What a great start to changing my view of Thirty Bench. Recently I reviewed the 2013 Small Lot Chard and loved it. It was shockingly good. I would put it up there with Hidden Bench chards of years past. So much so I coughed up the $30 for the bottle. So next up we have this wine.

12 months in French Oak, only 212 cases made. They do mean small lot. This time around Thirty Bench was sampling almost exclusively small lot wines. The wine is garnet in color with a nice rustic nose. On the mid palate the wine displays beautiful varietal pinot fruit notes including soft red berries and lots of rustic flavors dancing in the mouth. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth tannins and acidity. I would give this wine an 88+ Very nice indeed and a great example of how well Niagara can do pinots. I have to say my visit to Thirty bench is starting to change my opinion of them. The wine was $35 a bottle and I actually coughed it up for the collection!

From the winery’s web site:
2013 Small Lot Pinot Noir
$35.00 per bottle
Ruby red colour with a bouquet of cherry, raspberry, red plum and smoke. Medium-bodied, elegant and fruit-forward. Juicy, fruit flavours of red berry and cherry fill the mouth. Red berry tea, pomegranate and red currant notes linger on the finish.
Pinot Noir grapes were hand-picked and hand-sorted from our own Thirty Bench vineyard and fermented in open top wood fermenters. Barrel aged in French oak for 12 months.
Serve at a cool room temperature of 15 to 17˚C. Pair with venison and a red wine cherry reduction; veal steaks; beef tenderloin; mushroom based dishes; pheasant; quail; duck breast. Enjoy with a selection of cheeses which may include Peau Rouge, La Sauvagine and Reblochon. This wine will age gracefully through 2020.

2012 Vineland Estates reserve Chard

Pale to golden in color with a lovely varietal chard nose of apple and pear. On the mid palate the fruit is big with some nice apple and pear to match the nose. On the medium length finish there’s some lovely vanilla and butterscotch along with some nice acidity and a hint of pepper. Be sure and not serve this wine too cold or you will miss a ton of the depth and complexity. This really is a very nice chard. We served it with pan fried cod and it went really well. A perfect compliment to the meal. I would give it an 88-89. Yumm. By the way, the term Reserve on this wine does not refer to length of time in the barrel (which was 12 months) as it does for some wines, but rather a quality designation. The grapes were hand selected and sorted.

From the winery’s web site:
Varietal: Chardonnay Region: VQA Niagara Peninsula Country: Canada Vintage: 2012 Alcohol: 12.5% Acidity: 5.25
This latest vintage displays an entirely new level of excellence, focus and refinement within our Reserve Chardonnay pedigree. A beautifully integrated acidity helps to parse and enliven the weighty palate and leaves you looking for that next encounter. Winemaker: Brian Schmidt Retail: $34.95

2013 Vineland Estates Brut Reserve mini review

Pale in color with a nice crisp nose. On the mid palate the wine is a nice crisp dry bubbly. Lovely citrus notes. The bubbles are nice and fine. The medium length finish has some nice acidity. This is a very food friendly wine. I would give it an 88-89.

Dark in color with a mild nose. on the mid palate the wine displays some nice dark berries backed by some nice woody notes along with some firm acidity and tannins. Dark color with a nice smooth red cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some bright red cherries to match the nose along with some plum. From the LCBO web site:
Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvée 2012 Red Blend — VINTAGES#: 397521
STYLE – Full-bodied & Smooth
… Gun-Bun is one of the Sonoma wineries I never stop talking about, and this red blend is one of the reasons why. I don’t even know exactly what-all is in this, but it evokes something from the southern half of France, and with the big delicious plum note that jumps out of this wine I’m guessing Merlot is one of them. Also full of dark berries, chocolate and a bit of smoke. Rounded, nuanced, and rich. Buy it now, drink it soon. (Amy Glynn, pastemagazine.com, Sept. 8, 2015) $19.95

Pennywise Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 mini review

Dark color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice red cherries backed almost immediately by some crisp acidity and mild tannins. The finish is medium in length. The wine might be a bit on the young side, or require some breathing. Then you might be better able to appreciate the fruit. At this point I would give it an 88 or so.

From the LCBO web site:
Pennywise Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 — VINTAGES#: 441402
STYLE – Full-bodied & Smooth
The 2013 vintage has earned much praise as one of California’s very best ever – accolades stemming from the ideal wine-producing conditions created by the drought that has gripped the state. The resulting wines offer impressively ripe fruit and a distinct richness and character. The Pennywise has all this in spades; it’s floral, fruit forward and juicy, delivering great purity in its cassis and fruit notes. The judicious use of oak adds vanilla but does not overpower. A delicious, tremendous, value-priced wine. (VINTAGES panel, May 2015) $18.95

On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm tannins, lively acidity and some nice dryness. It’s a nice complex wine. We paired it with a BBQ steak and it went well. The complexity and bold notes are less noticeable with food, so it’s pretty food friendly. I would give it an 88-89 which for the price is a good deal.

From the LCBO web site:

The 2011 Finca La Rana seems to be a lighter style of Toro, with a bright ruby color and a nose mixing red and black fruit and an earthy, spicy twist developing a floral note with some hints of Mediterranean herbs, cured meat and licorice, not unlike some elegant wines from the Northern Rhone. The fruit is sourced from a vineyard planting with the plant material from their older vineyard planted ungrafted some 25 years ago. The palate is medium-bodied, very drinkable, juicy and supple. 2012 Vineland estates Reserve cab franc

We travel down to Niagara frequently. The experience in the Niagara’s winery’s is awesome. The people, the wine, the food, the Inns are all an amazing way to spend time (oh and some money :)). Vineland estates has one of the most picturesque restaurants in Niagara. Lovely ambiance. They also have on display a beautiful collection of art all made from wine done by Melissa Proudlock. Very unique.

Bill Mochoruk spent some time with us telling us all about some of the innovative things Vineland is doing. It’s the dedication of Vineland and others in the region that is continuing to elevate the status of Niagara wines. Bill was telling me about one of the new gadgets Vineland is employing, an optical sorter. They use it to remove the under size grapes that can impart a green, bitter, vegetal flavor. Very cool. Thanks Bill for all your time.

If there is one thing Niagara is well known for it’s Cab Franc. This wine is 89% cab franc, 10% cab sauv and 1% Merlot. The wine was aged 16 months in oak. The wine has 13.5% alcohol and has 6.5 g/l sugar, so dry. Reserve in this case refers to the quality of the grapes used (Vs longer in oak). The optical sorter was not used on this wine because they didn’t have it yet.

Ok onto this wine. Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some classic varietal cab franc notes. But where this wine lives is in the finish. On a medium to long finish the wine displays some firm tannins, and some lively acidity. This is a classic, big, yet approachable, cab franc that will easily age and soften with time. We paired it with a striploin and it went really well … I would give it a solid 89. $40 at the winery.

From the winery’s web site.
It is the perfect sensory storm. This wine comes at you full on and envelopes you in a wave of flavours that leaves you drenched in luxury. The fine, firm structure of resolved tannins amply supports the lively dark berry notes while underpinning the broader tones of leather, coffee and bittersweet chocolate. The intriguing complexities of this wine are artistically interlace to give a wine of, shall we say it – epic depth, power and longevity.

2012 Chateau des Charmes Cab Franc

Niagara make some great Cab Francs. The ones from Niagara on the lake (which this is) tend to be softer than those from the Escarpment. This one has lovely dark cherry on the nose. On the mid palate this displays some varietal cab franc notes, dark cherries and some nice mocha notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some soft tannins and some nice dryness that build in the mouth along with some nice acidity and a hint of pepper. This is a smooth soft cab franc with some nice complexity in the finish. I would give it an 88-89. $24.95 a bottle at the winery.

From the Winemakers web site:
Paul Bosc and Amélie Boury’s Winemaker’s Notes
Cabernet Franc is one of Niagara’s signature grape varieties and this is an excellent example of how it can be made into a complex wine with aging potential. The grapes are hand picked and then undergo temperature-controlled fermentation so the wine does not come across as “over extracted”. It’s then aged for one year in 1-2 year old French oak barrels to add an extra layer of flavour but not mask the essence of the wine. It’s ruby coloured, with flavours of raspberry and pipe tobacco. Although this wine is ready to drink, it will continue to develop in the bottle for at least 5-10 years.

Miguel Fontalvo’s vineyard manager’s Notes
We are fortunate to be able to work with the St. David’s Bench Vineyard. It is an incredible site. Because it is so far from the lake and nestled against the Escarpment, we are able to achieve full maturity and ripeness in our reds. We do a lot of hand-work in the rows to help the vines concentrate their flavours. This site also features underground sreams that carry limestone off the Escarpment. The vine roots access this water and we believe it is what gives wines grown here their signature minerality.

2015 Kim Crawford Sauv Blanc

Pale color with a mild grassy nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice smooth grassy notes to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice smooth crisp acidity. This is a nice smooth, well made, food friendly sauv blanc. Not as boisterous as some. I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with seared ahi tuna and it went very well.
