Ballast Stone Windjammer Shiraz 2012

Dark in color with a lovely fruit forward nose of blueberries. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose with blueberries being dominant. Not sweet at all. Red Stone Winery 2012 Limestone Pinot Noir

We recently took a trip down to visit our favorite wineries in Niagara Fielding, and Kacaba. While down there we lunched at Peninsula Ridge. Always a lovely way to spend a day! This time around we decided to throw in a wild card … go to a winery we hadn’t been to, and had never tasted one of their wines. Every winery has a story and this one is no exception. It is owned by the same folks that own Tawse. They have their own winemaker (an Aussie) so they are doing wines of a different style than Tawse.

This wine is garnet in color with a mild rustic varietal nose. Niagara make some lovely pinots … On the mid palate the wine displays some nice varietal rustic fruit notes, and soft red berries. On the medium length finish this wine displays some nice smooth tannins and some dryness. This is a middle of the road pinot. Not as fruit forward as some, not as big as others. It is very food friendly. I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with rack of Venison and it went very well. Mild enough to complement the Venison without overwhelming yet still bold enough to hold it’s own.

From the Winery’s web site:
First single‐vineyard release from the Limestone estate vineyard. Located on the Twenty Mile Bench, the 16‐year old block is farmed sustainably. Aged 16 months in French oak, this elegant wine displays notes of black cherry, raspberry complemented by earthy and floral notes.

Bonterra, a label established by Fetzer in 1990, prides itself on making wine exclusively from organic grapes. Indeed, according to the California Sustainable Winemaking Alliance, it’s the number one selling brand made from organic grapes. This 2013 Viognier helps explain why. Very floral, with a Muscat-like nuance even, it conveys stone fruit character without being heavy and is buttressed by vigorous acidity. Try it as an aperitif or with highly flavored food. From the winerys website:
Aromas of peaches and cream, citrus blossom and apricot greet you at the glass. Peaches and cream are a sensory signature of this wine. Fruit favors of apricot and peach are accented with spice. The wine is crisp and rich with beautiful elegance and a very long finish. The Mediterranean climate we enjoy on the North Coast, combined with careful selection of the right rootstocks (101-14, 5C, 110R) and particularly the aromatic Viognier Clone 642 that does well in the gravelly, loamy soils in the region brings us exceptional Viognier fruit even in challenging growing seasons. Following an established Bonterra custom, we’ve layered a little Muscat into the blend, adding to the exciting aroma of this wine. We followed our usual style of fermenting in both stainless (70%) and barrel (30%), with no malolactic fermentation. The wine is in oak for 6 months to gain a note of vanilla. The increasing use of stainless and cold fermentation provides ever fresher and decidedly forward fruit that leaps from the glass.

2013 Bonterra Chardonnay

This product is a LCBO vintages essential. Essentials are kept in many LCBO stores over a longer period of time than the every two week releases, sometimes even year after year which means you should be able to get your hands on this wine pretty easily.

Pale in color with a mild varietal nose with some nice apple and pear coming through. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice vanilla/apple and pear. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp acidity and a slight pepper/spicy note. It builds nicely in the mouth. Quite an impressive chard for the price, and not too over baked. Release Date:April 1, 2015

Description: Tropical notes of pineapple and banana plus buttercream, caramel and smoke. This is a smooth, creamy Chardonnay. Bonterra’s organic practices help express the vibrancy of the fruit. Pair with grilled shrimp, chicken tourtière or lobster with butter sauce.

From Bonterras web site:
Aromas of honey and lightly toasted almonds, followed by tropical aromas of pineapple, citrusy lemon and crème brulee. The wine is refreshing on the palate, with a minerality that is both bright and clean, drawing you into a vibrant tartness and lemon zest that is absolutely, positively Bonterra Chardonnay, vintage after vintage. Our organic fruit from Mendocino offers the characteristic flavors of green apples, pears, and citrus to our chardonnay. We ferment 70% of the juice in a combination of French and American oak, which is allowed to
undergo malolactic fermentation to create a rich, creamy wine with just a touch of new oak spice. The remaining 30% is fermented in stainless steel to preserve the crisp fresh fruit favors. We age most of the wine using previously-used or neutral oak in order for these fresh fruit characteristics to shine through. New oak was used for just 16% of the wine to give this chardonnay a nice vanilla note. An initial impression of rich, buttery cream quickly turns to aromas of honey and lightly toasted almonds, followed by tropical aromas of pineapple, citrusy lemon and crème brulee. The wine is refreshing on the palate, with a minerality that is both bright and clean, drawing you into a vibrant tartness
and lemon zest that is absolutely, positively Bonterra Chardonnay.

Kaiken Brut mini review

This wine is made in the traditional French method using pinot noir/chard grapes. Like French champagne the wine is non-vintage meaning they blend the grapes from different years to achieve the desired consistent flavor. Pale in color with a nice crisp nose with minerality coming through. On the mid palate the wine matches the nose, a nice crisp wine with some nice chard fruit coming through. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dryness and the citrus notes and acidity lingers nicely in the mouth. A very traditional champagne style bubbly. I would give it an 88 or so. Murphy-Goode Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Dark color with a nice cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice dark cherries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some noticeable alcohol and some tannins and dryness. The wine is a bit green, a little young I would suspect. This is definitely a fruit forward drink now style cab. I would give it an 88 or so.
