2009 TAWSE David’s Block Cabernet Merlot

A small jaunt into the cellar for a wine to pair with lamb chops I decided on this wine. I’ll admit it was on the first shelf I went to and it hit what I was looking for: red, dominating and a bit younger. Lamb can so often be overwhelming on wines, as it is a bold meat that takes over meals. To avoid this I often pair it with younger full-bodied and complex wines. TAWSE consistently produces solid Cabernet Merlots blends from their David’s Block. Blends of Cabernet Franc and Merlot that match the above criteria as well as hold up to their value when compared to their lofty price.

This is a short review to say, if you can, go get a bottle or 10 of these, the technical term for the experience is “yummy”. In all seriousness the nose was bold, with black cherry and tobacco. The colour deep and red. Initial sips gave a wine with much to offer, prominent tannins, great stone fruit, and a hint of vanilla. The Wine continued along these lines with it not softening terribly over the course of the meal. The red cherry and tobacco returned and hints of vanilla stayed on the even finish. This wine is a great drink now and it may have 1-4 years left to change during cellaring, though, I am not sure a change will be for the better. This is a very good wine.

The CWG Subjective Rating is 91 out of 100.

2012 In Situ Reserva Cab Sauv mini review

Another one from the Chilean wine event. Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some very nice red cherries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dryness and complexity. For a $13.95 wine this is quite nice. I would give it an 88-89. The rep Interesting Wines and Spirits said the wine was LCBO number 37952 but it’s not on the LCBO web site right now anyway.

Ventisquero Queulat Gran Reserva Pinot Noir 2012

Garnet in color with lovely ristic varietal pinot noir nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays lovely soft red berries, strawberries and the like to match the nose. The wine is medium in length with some lovely rustic notes lingering in the mouth along with some acidity, some tannins and a hint of pepper. Quite a nice pinot noir. I would give it an 88-89 which for the price, it’s a bargain. If you like pinots this is a good one!

2012 Edicion Limitada Sangiovese mini review

Another one from the Chilean wine event. This one caught my attention in that Sangiovese is an Italian grape and I’ve never seen it in Chile before. Lovely dried red berry nose smack on varietal for a Sangiovese. In the mid pallet the wine displays some nice oak, red berries and dried notes again smack on varietal for a Sangiovese. The wine is medium length in finish backed by some lovely dryness. I really enjoyed this wine and was shocked how good it was. The wine is not in the LCBO but wine rep Majestic Wine Cellars says it’s ~$30 per bottle. I would give it a solid 89+ Yumm

2008 Kacaba Wismer Vineyard Pinot Noir

Garnet in color with a lovely soft nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely strawberry and raspberry notes along with some rustic notes. The tannins and acid are well under control. This is largerly a fruit forward wine at this point. The wine is medium in length with the rustic notes lingering nicely in the mouth. We paired it with a lemon veal scallopinin and while it held it’s own it was not a match made in heaven. I would give the wine an 88-89. Very nice. I bought it at the winery for $22.95. Yumm

2014 Puerto Viejo Sauv Blanc mini review

I tasted this one at the recent Chilean Wine event at the ROM and it is one of the wines that stood out. Pale in color with a lovely bold nose with lots of grassy and some citrus notes coming through. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with lovely New Zealand style grassy notes coming through. On the medium length finish the wine lingers nicely in the mouth with grassy and citrus zest along with some nice acidity. This is a big edgy sauv blanc. Very nice. I would give it an 88+. Not in the LCBO right now, hopefully soon. They said it was worth ~$15. Nice! The rep for the wine is United Stars Corp.

Deu la Deu Alvarinho Vinho Verde 2013

Alvarinho in Portugal and Albarino in Spain are the same grape. They product some nice crisp food friendly wines some time. This wine is pale in color with a nose of minerality. On the mid pallet the wine is a crisp dry wine with some lovely minerality to match the nose. The wine displays some citrus notes as well. The finish is on the lighter side of medium in length leaving being a bit is acidity and a hint of apricot, almost Riesling like. This is a smooth, albeit milder, food friendly wine. I would give it an 88 or so. Not bad at all. We paired it with BBQ chicken and it held it`s own!

2012 Earthworks Shiraz

Inky dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet displays some lovely rich black cherries. The fruit is definitely the star in this wine! It’s slightly jammy in texture. On the medium length finish the black cherries live on nicely backed by some nice acidity, some noticeable oak and some fine tannins. There’s a hint of pepper to the finish as well. This is more of a subtle well made shiraz than a boisterous one. I would give it an 89 or so. We paired it with a hamburger with all the fixings and it went well and held it’s own. Sadly not in the LCBO. We had it when we stopped by Mill Croft in and Spa to see the lovely fall colors!

2013 Coffin Ridge L’Acadie Blanc

Sometimes when you choose to grow grapes in cold places you have to think out of the box. Coffin Ridge is up near Collingwood which gets some cold winters. This grape L’Acadie Blanc is designed to endure our cold winters. Pale in color with a nice citrus and minerally nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays citrus and minerally notes that smack on match the nose. The wine has some lovely mouth grip on a medium finish with the citrus notes lingering. Serve colder and it’s refreshing and crisp. As it warms up the wine’s length increases. This is a dry, crisp, food friendly wine. Somewhat Sauv blanc like. I would give it an 88+. Quite nice. Not in the LCBO but available at the winery.

2006 Kacaba Meritage

Telling exactly how long a wine may keep is not always easy. Take this one as a point in case. When I bought it in 2011 I did not think it had a whole lot of time left. I acutally had intended to drink it within 2 years of buying it, but forgot about the wine for a bit 🙂 Ah an error is rewarded. Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some firm dark berries. I am surprised how expressive the fruit in this wine still is! On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely dry velvety tannins. I would give this wine a solid 89. Yumm. I paid $16.95 and it’s a bargain at that price. Finding a wine in this price range that is still showing well 8 years later is impressive! Another great wine from Kacaba! In case you haven’t noticed, yay I’m a fan!

A rich estate blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, and merlot from out oldest vines. Barrel aged for 16 months, exhibiting rich berry flavors with subtle notes of toasted oak and vanilla spice. Serve with beef or hearty pasta dishes.

Drylands 2013 Sauv Blanc

I had the pleasure of attending Kiwi Expat Associations wine tasting event here in Toronto. They featured a number of wines from New Zealand. In case you don’t know Kiwis are what New Zelanders call themselves. Ah the wealth of things you can learn here at CanadianWineGuy 🙂 And yet again, I do digress … This wine was the highlight of the evening. Pale in color with a lovely zesty nose of Pink Grapefruit. On the mid pallet the wine has pink grape fruit to match the nose. The wine is medium in length on the finish with the zesty acidity lingering nicely. This is a smooth well made, food friendly wine. I would give it an 88-89. Very nice indeed!

Salton Classic Cabernet Franc 201

I saw this wine one on the latest Vintages release. It caught my eye because it was from Brazil. So I bought it. Dark in color with a fruity nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays lots of fruity notes, red fruits to match the nose. Some strawberries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some acidity and some tannins. This is not a great wine. If I had more I would return them. Honestly it reminded me of one of those kit wines your friends arrive with they made themselves and go on about how good it is … and cheap! Just add water 🙁

Yalumba Patchwork Shiraz 2011

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some black berries to match the nose.  There’s some complexity to the mid pallet.  On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins along with some firm acidity. There’s even some green notes to the finish. Some ageing might help. There’s no peppery notes at all on the finish. I would give the wine an 88 or so. Not a fabulous Shiraz but not aweful either.

2012 Fielding Cab Franc

I last reviewed the 2011 vintage of this wine and was thorough impressed. I love my Cab Francs and Niagara does them well. Big bold wines with lots of weight to hold up nicely with red meats. This one is dark in color with a mild nose of red berries consistent with a cab franc. On the mid pallet this wine displays some nice red berries to match the nose along with some nice chocolate/mocha notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice tannins along with some lovely dryness. This is another great year for Fielding’s Cab franc. If I had to compare it to the 2011 I would say its a little softer, not quite as bold. More apporachable. But all in all another lovely wine from Fielding. What can I say I am a fan for sure. I would give it an 89-90. Yumm. Keep up the great work Fielding!

2011 Chateau St Jean Sonoma Chard

Pale in color with a lovely varietal nose albeit a bit light. Be careful not to serve this one too cold or you will miss out on its complexity.  A lovely varietal mid pallet with pear and some vanilla coming through. The wine is medium in length on the finish with some nice mouth grip. The acidity is quite refreshing and well under control. There’s a hint of creamyness to the wine. Yum. 89 or so. Pair it with scallops for a heavenly treat.

Château de Panigon 2010 Bordeaux

I last wrote up the 2005 vintage of this wine and was impressed giving it a 90. I even stored some of this wine for future consumption and it held up well. So when I saw it on the release I was looking forward to trying it. This wine is inky dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries. The nose is the only thing mild about this wine! On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely dark berries with cab coming through. There’s also some noticeable chocolate notes. This wine has some lovely dryness that lingers nicely in the mouth backed by some firm tannins and acidity. I would give this wine a good 90. According to the winery’s web site the vineyard is 45% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 5% Petit-Verdot. The price is creeping up a bit, up to $19.95 from 16.95 but it should age well. I will defiitely go back and grab some more of this wine for the cellar.

Château Hyot 2010 Bordeaux

2010 is suppose to have been a very good year for Bordeaux! Dark in color with a dark red berry nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some dark red berries and cassis to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins along with some oak. This is a softer gentler Bordeaux. I would give it an 88 or so.

Château Brandeau 2010

Dark in color with a with a nice nose of dark red cherries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with dark red berries coming through backed almost immediatly by firm acidity, some nice spicy notes and firm tannins on a medium length finish. The wine has some nice pallet coating dryness that lingers in the mouth. This wine is a bit on the young side. You will need some breathing or aging. For now I would give it an 88-89.

LE CLOS JORDANNE CLAYSTONE TERRACE CHARDONNAY 2007

Slightly golden in color with a varietal chard nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely chard fruit along with some nice vanilla and oak coming through nicely through medium finish. It’s a smooth well made chard I would give it a solid 89! Yumm. I bought it back in June 2012 and it has kept well. If your keeping a cellar, be sure and keep good notes. They help a lot in managing the cellar.

Errazuriz Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Dark in color with a nice nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely red cherries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely firm tannins and some nice dryness. I would give it an 89 or so. A very nice wine. Probably one of the best Chilean Cabs I’ve had!

2011 Kacaba Cab/Syrah

I love Kacaba, they are doing some great work! I last reviewed the 2008 Cab/Syrah and enjoyed it, so I looked forward t trying thsi one. I found it a bit harsh when I first tried in May of 2013 it at the winery (too young) so I decided to let it age a bit. Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely rich black berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely tannins, some nice dryness and some nice peppery notes. I quite enjoyed this wine and any harshness has gone away. I would give it an 89 or so. Very nice. $18.95 a bottle at the winery (Not at the LCBO). The 2013 is being released soon. I can’t wait!

Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz 2012

Inky dark in color with a lovely nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine is a deep rich fruit forward Shiraz displaying lots of black berries to match the nose. The wine is fairly complex in the mid pallet. On the medium length finish the wine displays some noticeable alcohol along with some mild acidity. There are little to no spice/pepper/tannins on the finish of this wine. It’s a smooth well made wine. I would give it an 89 or so. We paired it with a juicy striploin. My GF said almost immediately there’s something missing in this wine. And it was the pepper she expects.

2012 Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay

Slightly golden in color with a lovely varietal nose with some vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays lovely vanilla and some cream coming through along with some pear. The wine is medium in length with some nice mouth grip. This is a very nice typical California style chard. I would give it a solid 89. Very nice!

Château du Port Cuvée Prestige Malbec 2010

Dark in color with a dark berry nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some slightly sweet dense black berry notes, almost blueberry like. Classic Malbec. On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins. Alcohol and acidity are well in check. I would give it an 89 or so.

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 mini review

Dark in color with a nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays cherries to match the nose. This is a lovely deep rich cab with a medium length finish. But at $49.95 it ought to be. I would give it a solid 89+
