Deu la Deu Alvarinho Vinho Verde 2013

Alvarinho in Portugal and Albarino in Spain are the same grape. They product some nice crisp food friendly wines some time. This wine is pale in color with a nose of minerality. On the mid pallet the wine is a crisp dry wine with some lovely minerality to match the nose. The wine displays some citrus notes as well. The finish is on the lighter side of medium in length leaving being a bit is acidity and a hint of apricot, almost Riesling like. This is a smooth, albeit milder, food friendly wine. I would give it an 88 or so. Not bad at all. We paired it with BBQ chicken and it held it`s own!

From the LCBO web site:

2012 Earthworks Shiraz

Inky dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet displays some lovely rich black cherries. The fruit is definitely the star in this wine! It’s slightly jammy in texture. On the medium length finish the black cherries live on nicely backed by some nice acidity, some noticeable oak and some fine tannins. There’s a hint of pepper to the finish as well. This is more of a subtle well made shiraz than a boisterous one. I would give it an 89 or so. We paired it with a hamburger with all the fixings and it went well and held it’s own. Sadly not in the LCBO. We had it when we stopped by Mill Croft in and Spa to see the lovely fall colors!

2013 Coffin Ridge L’Acadie Blanc

Sometimes when you choose to grow grapes in cold places you have to think out of the box. Coffin Ridge is up near Collingwood which gets some cold winters. This grape L’Acadie Blanc is designed to endure our cold winters. Pale in color with a nice citrus and minerally nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays citrus and minerally notes that smack on match the nose. The wine has some lovely mouth grip on a medium finish with the citrus notes lingering. Serve colder and it’s refreshing and crisp. As it warms up the wine’s length increases. This is a dry, crisp, food friendly wine. Somewhat Sauv blanc like. I would give it an 88+. Quite nice. Not in the LCBO but available at the winery.

From the Winery’s web site:
2013 L’ACADIE BLANC – $23.80
Originally developed at the Vineland Research Station, this terrifically aromatic white will truly impress those who seek fresh, vibrant, crisp wines.

Tasting Notes
L’Acadie Blanc possesses aromas of citrus, lime and sweet cut grass, evoking New Zealand’s Marlborough region or perhaps the Loire Valley in France. With generous floral notes, this wine is jam-packed with minerality that yields a pleasant, lingering finish making it a perfect choice with seafood, pasta with cream sauce or white meats.

2006 Kacaba Meritage

Telling exactly how long a wine may keep is not always easy. Take this one as a point in case. When I bought it in 2011 I did not think it had a whole lot of time left. I acutally had intended to drink it within 2 years of buying it, but forgot about the wine for a bit 🙂 Ah an error is rewarded. Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some firm dark berries. I am surprised how expressive the fruit in this wine still is! On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely dry velvety tannins. I would give this wine a solid 89. Yumm. I paid $16.95 and it’s a bargain at that price. Finding a wine in this price range that is still showing well 8 years later is impressive! Another great wine from Kacaba! In case you haven’t noticed, yay I’m a fan!

From the back of the bottle:
A rich estate blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, and merlot from out oldest vines. Barrel aged for 16 months, exhibiting rich berry flavors with subtle notes of toasted oak and vanilla spice. Serve with beef or hearty pasta dishes.

Drylands 2013 Sauv Blanc

I had the pleasure of attending Kiwi Expat Associations wine tasting event here in Toronto. They featured a number of wines from New Zealand. In case you don’t know Kiwis are what New Zelanders call themselves. Ah the wealth of things you can learn here at CanadianWineGuy 🙂 And yet again, I do digress … This wine was the highlight of the evening. Pale in color with a lovely zesty nose of Pink Grapefruit. On the mid pallet the wine has pink grape fruit to match the nose. The wine is medium in length on the finish with the zesty acidity lingering nicely. This is a smooth well made, food friendly wine. I would give it an 88-89. Very nice indeed!

From the LCBO web site
Drylands Sauvignon Blanc 2013 — VINTAGES#: 675405
STYLE – Aromatic & Flavourful
A fresh lemongrass note lends some aromatic lift to the core of peach, Meyer lemon and Key lime flavors within. Shows nice purity and plenty of juiciness, with a lovely air of elegance. Drink now. Score – 89. (MaryAnn Worobiec, winespectator.com, June 15, 2014)

Salton Classic Cabernet Franc 201

I saw this wine one on the latest Vintages release. It caught my eye because it was from Brazil. So I bought it. Dark in color with a fruity nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays lots of fruity notes, red fruits to match the nose. Some strawberries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some acidity and some tannins. This is not a great wine. If I had more I would return them. Honestly it reminded me of one of those kit wines your friends arrive with they made themselves and go on about how good it is … and cheap! Just add water 🙁

From the LCBO web site:
Salton Classic Cabernet Franc 2012—VINTAGES#: 363515 | 750 mL bottle
STYLE – Medium-bodied & Fruity
Deep ruby in the glass, with aromas of blackberry, tobacco, cassis, coffee and leather. Supple, with nice replays and ripe fruit. The tannins provide structure but do not overwhelm. Enjoy this with grilled chicken or barbecued sausages. (VINTAGES panel, May 2013)

Yalumba Patchwork Shiraz 2011

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some black berries to match the nose.  There’s some complexity to the mid pallet.  On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins along with some firm acidity. There’s even some green notes to the finish. Some ageing might help. There’s no peppery notes at all on the finish. I would give the wine an 88 or so. Not a fabulous Shiraz but not aweful either.

From the LCBO web site :
Yalumba Patchwork Shiraz 2011 VINTAGES#: 98392

STYLE – Full-bodied & Smooth
Yalumba has deliberately chosen parcels from the cooler (read Eden Valley) through to the warmer parts of the Barossa (read valley floor) to produce this very well-made, easy drinking, medium-bodied wine. A triumph over the vintage challenge. Drink [until] 2020. Score – 91. (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, Jan. 15, 2014

2012 Fielding Cab Franc

I last reviewed the 2011 vintage of this wine and was thorough impressed. I love my Cab Francs and Niagara does them well. Big bold wines with lots of weight to hold up nicely with red meats. This one is dark in color with a mild nose of red berries consistent with a cab franc. On the mid pallet this wine displays some nice red berries to match the nose along with some nice chocolate/mocha notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice tannins along with some lovely dryness. This is another great year for Fielding’s Cab franc. If I had to compare it to the 2011 I would say its a little softer, not quite as bold. More apporachable. But all in all another lovely wine from Fielding. What can I say I am a fan for sure. I would give it an 89-90. Yumm. Keep up the great work Fielding!

From the LCBO web site:
Fielding Estate Cabernet Franc 2012—VINTAGES#: 36194
STYLE – Medium-bodied & Fruity
Beautifully brambly and woodsy on the nose with blackberry, black cherry, cracked peppercorn and currants. Dark, smoky and peppery throughout with an awesome rush of acidity and fine, youthful tannins. Reminiscent of a 2010 Right Bank Bordeaux, this will age 3-5+ years. Fire up the barbecue and grill yourself some steak. (VINTAGES panel, July 2014)

2011 Chateau St Jean Sonoma Chard

Pale in color with a lovely varietal nose albeit a bit light. Be careful not to serve this one too cold or you will miss out on its complexity.  A lovely varietal mid pallet with pear and some vanilla coming through. The wine is medium in length on the finish with some nice mouth grip. The acidity is quite refreshing and well under control. There’s a hint of creamyness to the wine. Yum. 89 or so. Pair it with scallops for a heavenly treat.

Château de Panigon 2010 Bordeaux

I last wrote up the 2005 vintage of this wine and was impressed giving it a 90. I even stored some of this wine for future consumption and it held up well. So when I saw it on the release I was looking forward to trying it. This wine is inky dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries. The nose is the only thing mild about this wine! On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely dark berries with cab coming through. There’s also some noticeable chocolate notes. This wine has some lovely dryness that lingers nicely in the mouth backed by some firm tannins and acidity. I would give this wine a good 90. According to the winery’s web site the vineyard is 45% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 5% Petit-Verdot. The price is creeping up a bit, up to $19.95 from 16.95 but it should age well. I will defiitely go back and grab some more of this wine for the cellar.

From the LCBO web site:
Château de Panigon 2010 Bordeaux—VINTAGES#: 348250
STYLE – Full-bodied & Firm

Delicate nose, some graphite and tobacco, smoky oak, hint of bitter chocolate and ample black fruits lurking. Plump, firm, concentrated, this has weight and structure, with a firm elegance on the finish. Should have more staying power than most and needs some time to harmonise. Drink: 2014-2022. Score – 90+. Château Hyot 2010 Bordeaux

2010 is suppose to have been a very good year for Bordeaux! Dark in color with a dark red berry nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some dark red berries and cassis to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins along with some oak. This is a softer gentler Bordeaux. I would give it an 88 or so.

From the LCBO web site:
Château Hyot 2010 Bordeaux Red—VINTAGES#: 63537
STYLE – Medium-bodied & Fruity
Very ripe, offering saturated cassis, blackberry and boysenberry pâte de fruit flavors that are racy and distinctive, thanks to fresh acidity and sleek tannins. The long finish has nice density. Château Brandeau 2010

Dark in color with a with a nice nose of dark red cherries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with dark red berries coming through backed almost immediatly by firm acidity, some nice spicy notes and firm tannins on a medium length finish. The wine has some nice pallet coating dryness that lingers in the mouth. This wine is a bit on the young side. You will need some breathing or aging. For now I would give it an 88-89.

From the LCBO web site:
Château Brandeau 2010 Merlot Blend—VINTAGES#: 351973

Aromas of sandalwood, smoky notes and roasted red peppers interlace with mixed field berry fruit on the nose. This pairs well with grilled lamb chops and offers good value. Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Oct. 24, 2013)

2011 Kacaba Cab/Syrah

I love Kacaba, they are doing some great work! I last reviewed the 2008 Cab/Syrah and enjoyed it, so I looked forward t trying thsi one. I found it a bit harsh when I first tried in May of 2013 it at the winery (too young) so I decided to let it age a bit. Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely rich black berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely tannins, some nice dryness and some nice peppery notes. I quite enjoyed this wine and any harshness has gone away. I would give it an 89 or so. Very nice. $18.95 a bottle at the winery (Not at the LCBO). The 2013 is being released soon. I can’t wait!

Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz 2012

Inky dark in color with a lovely nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine is a deep rich fruit forward Shiraz displaying lots of black berries to match the nose. The wine is fairly complex in the mid pallet. On the medium length finish the wine displays some noticeable alcohol along with some mild acidity. There are little to no spice/pepper/tannins on the finish of this wine. It’s a smooth well made wine. I would give it an 89 or so. We paired it with a juicy striploin. My GF said almost immediately there’s something missing in this wine. And it was the pepper she expects.

From the LCBO web site:
Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz 2012—VINTAGES#: 998476 STYLE – Full-bodied & Smooth
Vivid purple-crimson; a totally delicious wine with a spring in its step more frequently encountered in cool climate shiraz; its fruit flavours span blood plum, red cherry and mulberry, these complexed by spice and garden herbs, the tannins fine and supple. Great value. Drink [until] 2027. Score – 95. (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, July 26, 2014) $26.95

Clare Valley $26.95 (998476) 14.5% alcohol

Jim Barry Wines are one of 12 family-owned ‘Australia’s First Families of Wine’; producing wine with sense of place. A reliably well-made and deftly balanced wine, this vintage delivers a dense, intense wine that features optimally ripened black fruits mingling with notions of pepper and herbs. Dry, full bodied, pepper and exotic spice shine on the palate, the full fruit flavours mingling with earthy, toasty notes to create appealing complexity. There’s a subtle yet defined structure framing the fruit, clean acidity matched to a touch of warmth that lingers on the extended finish. A good buy and a fine match for roast lamb. Vino noceto sangiovese 2010

Dark in color Lovely rich nose. On the mid pallet there are lovely rich red berries backed by some bold firm tannins on a dry finish with some nice spicy peppery notes. This wine has some lovely complexity to it. I would give it an 89-90. Sadly not at the LCBO.

From the Winery’s web site for the 2011 vintage:
2011 NOCETO SANGIOVESE, 750ML
Noceto’s flagship Noceto Sangiovese is modeled after the Tuscan Chianti – medium-bodied, fruit-packed, easy-drinking, well-balanced, and highly versatile with food. This wine is widely regarded as “the best Sangiovese in California.” (Dan Berger, Darrell Corti, Mike Dunne, Elaine Taylor). The 2011 vintage is Noceto’s 22nd vintage release. Grapes were sourced from 16 separate lots of six different clonal selections. Each lot was harvested and fermented separately, then later selectively blended. The resulting blend is 100% Sangiovese and consists of 65% estate grapes, 25% from neighboring vineyards, and the remaining 10% from the Gimelli Vineyard in Hollister & Masut Vineyards in Mendocino County.

Château La Maroutine 2009

Dark color smooth nose. Nice red berry cab franc mid pallet. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely dryness and some tannins. 89 or so. Not in the LCBO but Lifford lists the wine for $17.99.

From the Lifford web site:
Tasting Notes:
Ruby colour. Intense and deep, powerful nose with red jammy fruit notes. Soft tannins on the palate, smooth and charming with toasted bread hints. A nice easy-drinking Bordeaux wine.

Producer’s Notes:
Produced in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation and sold under the Bordeaux appellation, the plots of Château La Maroutine (6 hectares in red and 2 hectares in white) are situated on the slopes of the Saint Germain de Graves village at the south part of the Cadillac and Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation.

A family estate since 1789 and bought in 1942 by Jean Darriet, a 6th generation winemaker, Château La Maroutine has been gradually restructured.

Now the 8th generation is beginning to leave their imprint. New packaging for this elegant Bordeaux coincides with the renaissance of Château La Maroutine.

2012 Franciscan Chardonnay

Pale in color with a lovely varietal nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays lovely chard fruit along with some beautiful vanilla on the medium length finish. This is an elegant, bold complex rich chard. I really liked it. Be careful this is one of those chards that is very susceptible to temperature. Serve it too cold and you will miss out on the complexity this wine has to offer. It has some lovely mouth grip and lingers nicely in the mouth. I would give it a 90. Which for $25.95 is no BB bargoon, but it’s worth the money, but only if you like your chards California style which this clearly is!

From the LCBO web site:

One of my favorite brands both for consistently great wines and price points that always give great value is Napa Valley’s Franciscan Vineyards. Janet Myers and her team produce wines that are substantial, but not overwhelming, either in character or price and one of her latest, the 2012 Franciscan Chardonnay, makes for great tastes with a pleasantly long finish that can complement fresh fruit and cheese, chicken on the grille or linguine with white clam sauce, to name a few. 2012 Herman J Wiemer Cab Franc

I love my cab francs. Niagara makes some lovely one. So on our trip to the Finger Lakes I was anxious to try theirs. This one is dark in color with a nice nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine immediately hits with some pepper and then comes through with lots of black cherries. Rich and bold. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lingering black berries some tannins and some acidity. This is a lovely cab franc. I would give it an 89 or so. $21.85 at the winery, not in the LCBO.

From the winery’s web site:
Cabernet Franc 2012
Cabernet Franc is quickly gaining a reputation as a star in the Finger Lakes. This grape is ideally suited for cool climate growing and produces a consistently ripe crop each vintage. Although it is often used as a base for a blend, this grape stands beautifully on its own as a full bodied wine. Grown in the warm confines of our Magdalena Vineyard site, a lengthy growing season produces exceptional depth of character. The deep color matches ripe fruit and earthy tones as a prelude to velvety firm tannins and rich black cherry flavor.

2012 Pilliteri Canadian Gothic Red

I was walking through a farmers market at Ryerson the other day and there was Pilliteri. They explained to me that there is a pilot project allowing wineries to sample and sell there wines at farmers markets! An excellent idea. Ontario’s archaic alcohol laws need some change if only the teeny tiny one this represents. I do digress.

This wine was made explicitly to address the entry level price point, selling for $9. And to top it off they had a $5 off coupon making this a $4 bottle of wine. This wine is a blend of merlot and pinot noir. Dark in color with a slightly sweet nose with raspberries coming through. On the mid pallet this is a fruity wine with raspberries to match the nose. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with some tannins, some dryness and some acidity coming through. For a $4 bottle of wine this is not bad. I would give it an 87-88. Sadly I would have to say it’s one of the better Pilliteri wines I’ve had 🙁
