2013 Lakewood Pinot Gris

Another one from our road trip to the Finger Lakes. Almost golden in color with a mild nose of peaches. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with peaches and stone fruit coming through boldly with a hint of sweetness. The wine is medium in length on the finish with some nice minerality living on in the mouth. The wine has some reasonable mouth grip for a Pinot Gris. Very nice wine. I would give it an 89. When we had to choose what wines to bring back this was one that made the cut! We paired it with seared ahi tuna in sesame oil. It went ok, but it wasn’t a match made in heaven. No Rattatouli this time around 🙁 At $13.99 this wine is a bargain, sadly not at the LCBO.

2013 Oyster Bay Sauv Blanc

I love Sauv Blancs. They are super food friendly versatile wines. New Zealand make some terrific ones, albeit a bit on the pricer side. This one is an essential meaning it is regularly available. Pale in color with a lovely nose of pink grapefruit. On the mid pallet the wine has pink grapefruit and citrus notes to match the nose. The wine has a medium length finish with some lovely mouth grip. An excellent Sauv Blanc. I would give it an 89 or so.

Hinterbrook Barrel Fermented Reserve Chardonnay 2011

Pale in color with mild nose of pear and vanilla. On the mid pallet the wine has some mild pear notes but where this wine lives is in the medium length finish where vanilla lives in spades. The wine has some nice mouth grip and lives on nicely. It is a very food friendly wine. We paired it with pan fried Cod and it went well. I would give it an 88-89

The Chocolate Block 2012 Shiraz Blend mini review

Inky dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet there are lots of dark berries to match the nose along with some chocolate/mocha notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely dryness. I would give the wine an 88-89. A nice wine but pricey.

2011 Lamoreaux Cab Franc

I love Cab Francs! We just got back from our first ever trip to the Finger Lakes in New York State as part of a road trip. Our wine club has featured Lamoreaux wines before so stopping by this winery was a must. The Finger Lakes is a lovely picturesque place to sample wine! This wine is lighter in color almost garnet. On the nose some red berries are coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice black cherries along with a hint of sweetness. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely tannins. Not over the top at all. I would give it a solid 89 Yumm. $19.95 at the winery, sadly not available at the LCBO. We paired it with BBQd Ontario rack of lamb and it went very well.

2011 Hess Select Cab Sauv mini review

Dark in color with a nice nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice smooth red berries and cherries backed up quickly by some acidity and tannins to a medium length finish. I would give it an 88-89.

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice red berries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice dryness, some firm tannins and some earth notes. Not a bad wine at all. I would give it an 88-89.

2012 Grüner Veltliner

We just returned from our first trip to the Finger Lakes in New York. They have a well established wine region with over 90 wineries in the area. I’ve often commented on here about the fact the I like Grüners. It’s always perplexed me that no one in Niagara is planting them. Well in the Finger Lakes they are starting to experiment. Two wineries have their first wines from Grüners and apparently more are to come! I digress from the point at hand. Well that never happens now does it 🙂

We stopped by Ki my favorite sushi restaurant in downtown Toronto and I was thrilled to see this one on the by the glass list! Pale in color with a nice dry minerally nose. On the mid pallet the wine is nice and dry, crisp, with some mild peach and stone fruits along with some minerality. The wine is medium in length with some mild citrus notes lingering along with some nice dryness. I would give this one a 89. A lovely varietal Grüners. Sadly not in the LCBO. Yumm …

Rodney Strong Merlot 2011

Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some red berries and some mild plum notes. The wine is medium in length with some smooth tannin. This is a nice wine but definitely not a fruit forward merlot. Almost more cab like. I would give ti an 88-89.

Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Inky dark in color with a nose of red and black berries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with mostly black berries and some red berries along with some mocha coming through. Not to the point of say a blueberry. On the medium length finish the wine displays some fine tannins and some acidity. Not a bad cab. I would give it an 88-89. Not bad at all!

2014 Two Oceans Sauv Blanc

Two Oceans are rebranding their wines and recently held a kick off of the new brand. I had the pleasure of attending! This one is pale in color with mild nose of citrus notes coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice lemon and a bit of zest. On the medium length finish the acidity lingers nicely showing some nice mouth grip. This is a smoother lighter sauv blanc, and is a very food friendly wine. I would give it an 88 or so, which for $10.25 is a bargoooon!

JACOB’S CREEK 2012 RESERVE CHARDONNAY ADELAIDE HILLS mini review

Pale in color with a lovely varietal chard nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays varietal chard flavors such as apple, some vanilla and some butteryness. The wine is subtle and builds nicely in the mouth. This is a well made chard for the price. I would give it an 88-89.

2012 Franciscan cuvee sauvage Chardonnay

Pale in color with a lovely varietal chard nose. On the mid pallet the wine is a lovely bold rich chard. Some apple and buttery notes coming through. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length on the finish. 89-90 yummy. This particular one is not in the LCBO sadly. $40 US at the winery.

Winemaker’s notes:
Franciscan was the first Napa Valley winery to produce a wild yeast fermented Chardonnay, starting in 1987. Following traditional Burgundian techniques, yeast is not added to the juice, but instead we let the native yeast that live on the grapes perform the fermentation. Unlike cultured yeasts, wild yeast comes in many strains, reflective of the vineyard terroir. They work in a relay, and as one strain finishes, another starts, each adding its own personality to the wine, giving layers of complexity – which is why we go to the extra effort of “going wild.”

For Cuvée Sauvage, we use exclusively our finest lots from cool Carneros, with the heart of the blend coming from our estate Larsen Vineyard. The Dijon clones planted provide concentrated fruit character, and give minerality, vibrancy, and complexity to Cuvée Sauvage, with consistency year to year of the wild yeast expression.

Firestone Santa Ynez Sauv Blanc

Pale in color, with a mild nose with some citrus coming through. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with some citrus coming through. This is a milder sauv blanc. I forgot to take note of the year of the wine, I was at a restaurant. I would give it an 87-88. Not at the LCBO.

Rabl Lengenlois Grüner Veltliner 2012

I enjoy Grüners. They are unique dry crisp food friendly wines. This one is pale in color with a mild nose reminding me of Riesling. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice Riesling like notes, honeysuckle and even a little pear along with some nice dryness and minerality. The wine is medium in length on the finish with the minerality and some fresh acidity lingering. This is a very food friendly wine. If you’ve not tried a Grüner before this is a good one to try. I would give it an 88-89 Very nice. A good deal for $16.95 as Grüners always are!

Bernard Defaix Chablis Burgundy, France

Pale in color with a mild nose with some apricot and the like coming through. On the mid pallet the wine is light with some apricots coming through. The wine kind of reminds me more of a crisp Riesling. The finish is on the lighter side of medium. This is an odd taste for a Chablis. I would give it an 87-88. Not thrilling. Not available at the LCBO. I sadly did not get the year of the wine.

Milbrandt Traditions Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some deep rich black berries more reminiscent of a Shiraz, almost blueberries. Some cassis coming through as well. On the medium length finish the wine displays some smooth tannins, some nice acidity along with some peppery notes. There’s some noticeable alcohol but that will pass quickly. The wine has some lovely complexity. I would give it an 89-90. Yummy

CHÂTEAU MANON LA LAGUNE 2010

Dark in color with a lovely nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with some nice black berries coming through along with some nice chocolate and mocha. On the medium length finsih the wine displays some nice tannins, dryness and peppery notes. I would give this wine a 90. it`s a varietal Bordeaux at a good price.

2010 St. Clement Oroppas Napa Valley

Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries coming through along with some earthy notes and some wood. On the mid pallet the wine displays some mild cherries to match the nose along with some earthy notes and wood to go right along with the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some mild tannins and very noticeable alcohol. I would give this wine an 87-88. Not a great wine to my tastes. I expected better. Not at the LCBO.

Villa Sandi Prosecco

Pale in color with a lovely crisp citrus nose. On the mid pallet the wine is a lovely crisp prosecco perfectly matching the nose. There some nice minerality to go along with the citrus notes along with some nice fine bubbles. This is a crisp, dry wine that is very food friendly. I would give it an 89 or so. Another great prosecco. Perfect for the patio. We paired it with roast chicken and fettuccine alfredo and it went very well. Yumm. At $14.95 you can`t go wrong with this one! Spot on varietal!

Frei Brothers Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Dark in color with a lovely mild nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely red cherries along with some cassis. The wine has some smooth tannins on it’s medium length finish. We paired it with a rack of lamb and it went perfectly. I would give the wine a solid 89. Yumm. I would consider this a drink now wine.

Viña Herminia Excelsus 2009

I enjoy my tempranillos big with lots of finish to them … This one is dark in color with a nice nose of red berries along with some wood and some alcohol. On the mid pallet the wine displays lovely varietal tempranillo fruit, red berries but this wine lives in the medium length finish that has some nice bite, some nice dryness and some firm tannins. This isn’t a bruiser but it’s a big tempranillo for sure. Especially without food. As the wine opened up there was noticeable eucalyptus coming through. I paired it with a lasagna and it went very well I would give it an 88. If you like your tempranillos soft and smooth look elsewhere …

Two Oceans Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc Sparkling

Pale in color with a nice citrussy nose along with some minerality coming through. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with some nice citrus notes coming through and living on into a medium length finish. The bubbles are definitely noticeable, a little more so than say a prosecco which this wine will unavoidably be compared to. This is a very food friendly wine. I would give it an 88 or so, which for $12.95 is not a bad deal!

2014 Two Oceans Pinot Grigio

Pale in color with a lovely nose of stone fruits. On the mid pallet the wine displays stone fruit to match the nose, some pear, and a hint of peach. The wine is on the lighted side of medium in length on the finish with some acidity finishing off. I would give it an 88-89. Not a bad Pinot Grigio at all and another bargain at $10.25.
