2012 Mount Oakden Shiraz

Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice blueberries to match the nose backed almost immediately by firm acidity, tannins and pepper. This wine is way too young. It got better as it breathed and the fruit was far more enjoyable. If you buy this now be sure and decant it. For now I would give it an 88-89 I bet even a year would make a huge difference. Not available at the LCBO but it is locally carried by Lifford for $16.95 a bottle in cases of 12.

CHAPPELLET SIGNATURE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005

Ever wondered what the LCBO do at the end of a vintages listing with the one or two bottles that have been hanging around? Well they sell them through their web site in what they call “Bin Ends”. You buy them online and then they ship them to your local LCBO for you to pickup. Very handy. And you can get some bargains. This one was worth $60 and I picked it up for $45. I had previously tasted it at The Society for American Wines annual cab event. California cabs are by far one of my favorite wines! I cracked this one as part of New Years Eve celebration and paired it with a rack of lamb. It went exquisitely!

Dark in color with rich nose of cherries that invites you in! The mid palle matches the nose with deep rich cherries and jammy notes. It’s got some lovely dryness on the medium length finish along with some supple tannins. This is a lovely wine. I would give it a solid 91. Yummy. I still have one more of these! Yay!

LA CREMA CHARDONNAY 2012

Pale to golden in color with a mild nose with some vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet this is a lovely varietal California style chard with vanilla and some citrus coming through. The wine has a slightly creamy mouth feel to to. On the medium length finish the vanilla lives on nicely. This is a smooth well made chard. We paired it with sea scallops and it went well. This is by no means a big chard, more of a subtle one. I would give it an 88-89, but at $28.95 this is no bargain. For half the price I think I would go with the Sterling Vintner’s chard.

2009 Mission Hill Quatrain

I enjoy Okanagan wines so when I saw this one at Harper’s Landing as part of my Wine Meetup group. Dark in color with a mild nose. There is no hint whatsoever of what’s to come. On the mid pallet the wine displays some mild red berry fruits and some some cab franc noted backed quickly by big bold firm tannins, strong peppery notes and some acidity. The wine has a long finish that lives on in the mouth for quite a bit with some nice dryness and complexity. This is a typical Okanagan wine. A little more ageing might give you more of a chance to enjoy the fruit as the tannins die down. I would give this wine a solid 90. Make sure you are pairing it with something hearty or not a chance your tasting anything other than the wine. Yummmmmmmm. The wine is not available at the LCBO but is $50 at the winery.

2009 Quatrain
A Quatrain is a poem or stanza that is always composed of four lines. QUATRAIN is a similarly composed of four grape varieties:
Merlot 35%, Syrah 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Cabernet Franc 15%, all in perfect harmony.

The grapes were selected from the best blocks within our estates in Osoyoos and Oliver. They were hand harvested, hand sorted, and gravity filled in small lots to French oak fermenters. After extended maceration, the free run wine and a portion of lightly basket pressed wine was aged separately in a selection of 100% French oak barrels for 15 months.

The 2009 Quatrain is full bodied, yet soft and approachable with fine tannins and a round, fruit forward palate. Merlot and Syrah blend seamlessly and are from the finest parcels along the Black Sage and Osoyoos benches. Notes of plum, dark cherry, blueberries and pepper fill the glass, along with subtle hints of licorice, clove, tobacco and vanilla. This well-structured wine displays fine tannins and bright acidity to frame its exotic spice and ripe fruit notes.

2011 Greenlane Riesling

This is another one from the stunning Paradiso Burlington winemakers dinner. Pale in color with a nice crisp nose. On the mid pallet the wine is a nice dry riesling. Nice and crisp. Some traditional honeysuckle as well as some green apple notes. The wine is on the medium in length on the finish. This is a very food friendly riesling. I would give it an 88-89. Quite nice, especially for the price $15.95. I like my rielsings dry and crisp, just like this one. they paired it with Confit Chicken Thigh with Aged Goat cheese and Duck Fat Fried Gnocchi which was delicous and paired really well. I never would have thought of putting the goat cheese on the chicken thigh but it really did work!

Monitoring your blood alcohol level

This isn’t exactly a wine post but I thought I would share anyway. For those of you subscribed on my tech blog I apologize this is a cross post. Given the topic of wine I thought I would share 🙂

Everyone knows drinking and driving is a problem. So keeping an eye on your blood alcohol level is very important. In this post I am going to cover two methods. Neither is perfect. Neither is legal. Both of which can be used as tools. First off Alcodroid is an Android app. The way it works is you enter every time you take a drink. It’s flexible in that it allows you define whatever you want in terms of a drink as presets. This then calculates a blood alcohol level based on an algorithm. It takes into account your sex and weight. The program assumes you drink the whole thing the moment you enter it and then the blood alcohol level comes down from there. Of course this isn’t the way your body works but it is about the only way to do it. The program also keeps a running toll of what you have drank. It also can display statistics such as average number of drinks, number of dry (no alcohol) days and many other stats. The program is VERY well done. It also works fine under BB10 and fairly well even on the odd size screen of the Q10. How accurate the program is at tracking your blood alcohol level I can’t say, and remember this is not legally admissible.

The second device is a keychain sized blood alcohol meter called BAC Track. This device is handy in how small and portable it is. In the instructions it says clearly that you need to wait 20 minutes after eating or drinking anything before using it. I have found this to be VERY true. The number you get otherwise is just not reasonable. If you do, interestingly enough I find both these methods actually come up with VERY similar numbers! Wow.

2011 Yalumba Vermentino

I tasted this one at the Toronto Vintner’s Club. I had never heard of the grape before so had to look it up. Turns out it’s an Italian varietal. Pale in color with a slight green hinge. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely minerality along with citrus/lime notes. The wine is medium in length on the finish with some nice acidity lingering. It has some nice mouth grip. It is very Sauv blanc like for me. I bet it’s very food friendly. I would give it an 88-89. It’s $19.95 on consignment from B&W wines.

2008 Valiano Chianti Classico mini review

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some light red berries. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in finish with some tannins. This is definitely a milder Chianti. I would give it an 88 or so.

CHÂTEAU HAUT BEYZAC CUVÉE O’PEYRAT 2009

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet this wine is dominated by alcohol and green notes. Some coco, some herbaceous notes, even some mint. The green notes linger in the medium length finish. This is an ok wine but not really to my tastes. I would give it an 88 or so. And really, if I had more, I’d return them.

2012 Kendall Jackson Vintners reserve Chardonnay

I’ve reviewed this one a couple times now, the last was the 2010. I find these wines can vary year to year so it’s worth doing it for different vintages. Pale to golden in color with a lovely varietal California albeit milder nose with some vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with vanilla and some citrus notes. The wine lingers nicely in the mouth with a medium length finish. It is a smooth well made, not over baked, California style Chard! Yumm. I would give it a 89. We paired it with a seafood quiche and it went well!

2011 First Press Chardonnay mini review

I tasted this one at the LCBO tasting bar. Mini reviews are done on a small sampling. Pale in color with a lovely nose of vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice vanilla to match the nose backed by some acidity, some and spicy notes. In the medium length finish the acidity lingers for a bit. All in all this was not a bad chard but not a fabulous one either. I would give it an 88 or so.

2010 Greenlane Chardonnay

I had the absolute pleasure of attending a winemakers dinner at Paradiso Burlington where Dianne Smith the winemaker at Greenlane came out to tell us all about there wines. This wine was for me the highlight of the evening. The vines are 8 years old and the wine was fermented 60% in stainless steel and 40% in French oak. Pale in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine has soft vanilla notes along with some mild butterscotch. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length on the finish. It is a milder, smooth, well made wine. I would give it an 88-89. They also have a reserve where all of the wine saw oak as well as Sur de lie. I’d love to try that one! This one shows some amazing promise. A very nice wine indeed. It was very food friendly and was paired with a Confit chicken thigh made with aged goat cheese, which was yummy by the way. $21.95 at the winery.

2009 Henry of Pelham Estate Pinot Noir

I got given this one as a gift. Deeper garnet in color with nice rustic nose and some sugar coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays classic pinot noir flavors with rustic notes, and strawberry coming through. On the medium length finish some of the strawberry lingers along with some tannins. This isn’t a terrible wine by any means but not fabulous by my tastes either. I would give it an 88 or so.

2010 Columbia Crest Chardonnay

Pale in color with a mild nose with some vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays vanilla to match the nose along with some subtle pear. This is a smooth, on the lighter side, California style chard. On the finish the wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with some vanilla lingering. This is a very food friendly wine or can easily be sipped on it’s own. I would give it an 88-89. Nice! And what’s to complain at this price!

2010 Wakefield Shiraz

Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with dark berries and smooth refined tannins. The wine is medium in length on the finish. We paired it with a filet mignon and it went well. I would give this wine a solid 89. For the money this wine is a bargoon!

J. Lohr Seven Oaks 2011 Cab

I like a lot of the wines coming out of J. Lohr. Great value for money. This wine is dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some black cherries to match the nose. On the finish the wine has some firm tannins, some alcohol, and even some acidity right out of the bottle. A little bit of breathing or ageing helped to ease this allow you to enjoy the fruit more. This is a lovely cab. I would give it an 89 or so. This wine is on a number of restaurant’s menus so if you can’t think of anything else to order this is not a bad choice.

2011 RODNEY STRONG ESTATE PINOT NOIR

Garnet in color with a nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays strawberries and some rustic notes. On the lighter side of medium in length on the finish there are some tannins to round out the wine. This is definitely more of a fruit forward wine. The style the LCBO label it as is Medium bodied and fruity. I’d say that is accurate. I would give it an 88 or so.

CASTELLO DI NEIVE BARBARESCO 2004

This wine is one of my favs. It’s a go to wine for me. Barbaresco’s in case your not aware is made from the same Nebbiolo grape as the mighty Barolo. I consider them a cheap man’s Barolo. They tend to big bold wines. This one is an essential in the LCBO so can be found regularly. I’ve had this particular one in my cellar since 2008 so I thought it was time to crack it and see what age has brought to the table. Pale almost garnet in color (as it always is), with a mild nose. The cork looks good. So I am getting anxious. On first taste out of the bottle … bam, there it is, that horrible realization you’ve waited too long. It’s basically vermouth like. Nasty. Crap, it wasn’t so bad as to be undrinkable but not long off. I cracked a second one I had in the cellar and it too was past due. I am inside the recommended keeping length, but that is at best a guess. There’s no science behind that estimate. Sad 🙁

2012 Orpailleur Classique (white)

Another of the wines from the Quebec region. I first encountered the Seyval (white) grape, another of the hearty breeds made for extreme climates, in Prince Edward county at Waupous. Waupous by the way is one of my favorite wineries in Prince Edward County. Not so much for the wines which are simple well made and inexpensive, more for the lovely ambience of the place!

I do digress … This wine is a blend of Seyval and Vidal. Pale in color with a nose of minerality and some floral notes (likely from the vidal). On the mid pallet the wine displays minerality to match the nose, and some citrus notes. On the lighter side of medium in length on the finish the wine displays minerality along with some slightly tart green apple notes. The sweetness of the vidal has offset this tartness. I’d give it an 88 or so for $16.

CHÂTEAU CLÉMENT SAINT-JEAN 2010

Dark in color with a nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark berries to match the nose. ON the medium length finish the wine displays some nice complexity and some nice dryness along with some smooooth tannins. I would give the wine a solid 89-90. Very nice!

Orpailleur Rouge 2010

We went snowboarding at Mont Sutton and saw a bunch of winery signs so decided to dip in and check out wine from the region. Quebec does not export much (if any) of it’s wine to Ontario so I had no idea what they were doing in the region. This particular wine is largely made of Frontenac grapes. A hearty grape from the University of Minnesota’s arsenal. I first encountered these at Hoity Toity cellars. Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some red berries, nothing particularly jumping out at me. The finish is on the lighter side of medium in length with not a lot going on. Tannins and dryness are negligible. This is by no means a horrible wine, but by no means a good one either. At $15.60 a bottle I would not be jumping to buy more. I would give it an 87 or so. Don’t pair this with anything too hearty or you won’t be tasting the wine at all.

SEVEN FALLS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010

I enjoy Washington State wines. Dark in color with a nice nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark cherries to match the nose, backed immediately by some harsh notes. I’m not even sure what I would say, mint maybe, or menthol. I was about to give up on the wine since I had a dinner guest showing up but I decided to break out my handy dandy decanter. 20 minutes in the decanter and the hard notes were absolutely gone. Leaving the rich fruit along with some nice tannins on a medium finish. In the end this is a lovely wine as long as you breath it. I would give it a solid 90 (once decanted). Some aging would also do the trick.

2009 Ironstone Merlot

Dark in color with a lovely nose of plum. On the mid pallet this is a lovely fruit forward Merlot with lots of plum coming through to match the nose. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length. This is a lovely varietal Merlot. I would give it an 89.

2009 Stimson Merlot

Stopped by Spice Route last night for dinner and had this wine. Dark in color with a mild nose of plum. On the mid pallet the wine displays plum to match the nose along with some red cherries. There’s some tannins on the medium length finish. It’s a little bit sweet. I would give it an 88-89. Not a bad wine at all. Not in the LCBO and there’s no mention of price on the web site but at $9 a glass at a restaurant it couldn’t be all that expensive.

SISTER’S RUN BETHLEHEM BLOCK CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely rich black cherries, and even a little blueberries. The wine is one the lighter side of medium in length on the finish with some tannins coming through and even a hint of pepper. This is definitely more of a fruit forward cab made in more of a traditional Aussie style. I would give it an 89. Yumm.
