2013 Mount Riley Sauv Blanc

Pale in color with a nice nose of grapefruit. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with some nice mild grapefruit coming through. This is more of a smooth Sauv blanc. Nice refinement. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice mouth grip with grapefruit lingering nicely. This will be a very food friendly wine. I would give it an 88-89. Yumm.

There are precious few guarantees in life, but the quality, purity and sheer pleasure to be found in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc come pretty darn close. CHÂTEAU GRAND VILLAGE 2010

Dark in color with a nice nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet this is definitely a cab franc dominated wine. I like cab franc but expect a lot more from a Bordeaux. The wine is medium in length on the finish. This isn’t a bad wine but not a very complex one either. I would give it an 88 or so.

From the LCBO web site for a different year:
CHÂTEAU GRAND VILLAGE 2009 VINTAGES 192997 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 20.85
Made in: Bordeaux, France By: Jean Pierre Moueix
Release Date: Sep 28, 2013
13.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Medium-bodied & Fruity Varietal: Merlot/Cabernet Franc Sugar Content: 4 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Tasting Note
The Grand Village is wine from their family estate and their 2009, a blend of 75% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, is a sleeper of the vintage. The good news is that there are 5,000 cases of this wine, which shows loads of raspberries and cherries, silky tannins, wonderful elegance and a medium-bodied mouthfeel. The family has been farming this same terroir for over 500 years! Score – 88. (Robert Parker Jr., erobertparker.com, Feb. 2012)

2010 Ghost Pines Chardonnay

Pale in color with a lovely nose of vanilla. This wine is senstive to temperature. Serve it too cold and you will miss out on the complexities of this wine. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely chard fruit, some apples, and the like. On the finish the wine has some lovely mouth grip with vanilla sticking around and even some butterscotch. Very nice. I would give it an 89 or so.

BERONIA RESERVA 2008

Dark in color with a nice nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark berries to match the nose along with some mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays some smooth tannins and some nice dryness. It lingers and builds nicely in the mouth. A very nice wine given the price. I would give it an 88-89.

Description
Awarded a Bronze Medal at the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards.

Tasting Note
Rioja (REE-hoe-Ha!) is [in] a state of flux these days. You have a raft of producers sticking to their old ways, another raft (can you have 2 rafts?) modernizing and making wine in the international style, and outside the border, there’s a slew of new Spanish regions like Toro or Jumilla, which have consumers excited. But Beronia seems to skirt all these issues and make great wine at a good value year after year. They’re neither classic nor new, producing a wine that definitely has seen some oak but remains fresh and vibrant in the mouth. If you’re new to rioja, this is a great place to start – with the proviso that as you progress you’ll often run into more expensive bottles that aren’t quite as good. The 2005 vintage of this wine was sublime, but the current offering – 2008 – is also a winner. (Neal McLennan, westernlivingmagazine.com, March 26, 2013)

Cycles Gladiator 2010 Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark in color with a lovely nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark cherries to match the nose backed by some strong spicy and peppery notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm tannins.  The pepper eases as it breathes. The wine is a bit young. I would give it an 88-89.  Sadly not in the LCBO.

From the winery’s Web site http://www.hahnfamilywines.com/wineInfoTemplate.asp?BrandID=14&WinesID=344
True to its appellation, the 2010 Cycles Gladiator Cabernet has the strength and power characteristic of wines from Lodi. A deep purple color supports a dense, black cherry dominated aroma. Cherry flavors continue to headline through to the finish, supported by lighter accents of plum, cola and cedar. A big, muscular wine, a weighty tannic structure make their presence felt throughout.

A show stopper on its own, this winewould pair beautifully with grilled bison hamburgers with stone ground mustard.

2011 Martin Codax Albarino

Pale in color with a very light nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some mild minerality, and citrus notes. This is a very mild Albarino. Not great, but not terrible either. I would give it an 88 or so.

Tasting Note
Martín Códax is the largest producer in the region, but his wines always taste beautifully handmade. This is the first write up ever of the spectacular 2011 albariño and it will grab every one of your taste buds and give them a terrific work out. With delicate floral notes and a bracing apple and lemon balm theme this is a heavenly wine. (Matthew Jukes, matthewjukes.com, April 21, 2012)

HOWLING MOON OLD VINE ZINFANDEL 2009

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet this wine has some deep rich varietal zinf flavors. Lots of dark berries some chocolate notes and some sweetness. That is indicated in 10g/l in the sugar scale below. Straight out of the bottle the wine displays some firm peppery notes. These eases a bit leaving some rich black berries in the mouth on a medium length finish. There’s some tannins on the finish as well. I would give this an 89-90. This is definitely a big rich Zinf. Yumm.

Tasting Note
Great structure and refinement in this Zin along with the impressive depth of flavour typical of the variety. Aromas of mixed berries, mocha and toffee greet the nose and are reprised nicely on the palate, which shows good delineation, and a certain creaminess to the texture. A fine choice for rib roast. 2013 ERRAZURIZ SAUVIGNON BLANC

I love Sauv Blancs. They are super food friendly! In the past there were a number of inexpensive Chilean Sauv blancs but over time they have been removed from the LCBO. This one remains. It’s clear based on the bottle renaming they are attempting to kick it up stream referring it as an Estate Sauv Blanc. Fortunately, for now, this isn’t reflected in the price. I’ve tried the Reserva and been underwhelmed on the value equation (not worth the extra dollars). The change in label took me a second to figure out. This one is pale in color with a lovely nose of grapefruit and some grassy notes. On the mid pallet the wine displays some soft grapefruit to match the nose along with some lovely mouth grip leaving some nice citrus notes. This is yet again another great year for this inexpensive wine. At this price it is a bargain compared to much more expensive New Zealand wines. Now it’s not as boisterous as some but yummy none the less. I would give it a SOLID 89. A perfect companion for spicy foods, Asian foods and many other dishes!

Pale straw in colour, this medium bodied white has fresh grassy aromas, with lots of citrus and green apple, the citrus carries through on the palate and the finish is dry and refreshing.

MOET & CHANDON BRUT IMPERIAL

Champagne as you may or may not know is non vintage. That means they blend wine from a number of years to make the wine. Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France (legally speaking). And Champagne is made from the Chardonnay grape. This wine was brought along as a part of our New Years celebration by my good friend Lori! She had had it for somewhere around 6 years. This wine is pale in color with a lovely mild nose of minerality. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely crisp minerality to match the nose. The bubbles are nice and fine and the sugar level is well under control. It is medium in length on the finish. This is a lovely dry crisp Champagne. I would give it a solid 90. Yumm. Thanks Lori!

Straw/gold colour with with a greenish tinge and a fine mousse; forward floral, mineral, toasty, brioche, and yeasty aromas; dry with citrus, delicate bread dough and apple flavours; light creamy mouthfeel with crisp citrus acidity and a clean finish.

2011 Ca’ Momi Cab sauv Mini review

Dark in color with a lovely nose of red berries and cherries coming through, typical of a Napa Cab. On the mid pallet the wine displays cherries, cassis and red berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some acidity and some spice. This isn’t the most fruit forward cab but it is quite nice. I would give it 6 months or so in the cellar or a bit of breathing to help the acidity die down and allow the fruit to shine through.

From the LCBO web site:
CA’ MOMI CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011 VINTAGES 315002 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 21.95
Made in: California, USA By: Ca’Momi
Release Date: Jan 4, 2014
13.9% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Smooth Sugar Content: 8 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: D – Dry

Description
Napa Valley is without doubt one of the world’s top-flight Cabernet Sauvignon regions. Napa’s success is partially due to its near-matchless capacity to consistently articulate Cabernet’s hallmark cassis notes. This example, from Ca’ Momi, is an incredible value for Napa Cabernet, and profoundly demonstrates the region’s distinctive ability to produce exquisite expressions of Cabernet that are loaded with fruit, depth, complexity and, of course, cassis notes aplenty.

2011 Oberon Cab Sauv

I had this wine given to me as a house gift this Christmas season. The wine is not in the LCBO but in the US is worth about $25 a bottle. This wine is Mondavi family. The Winery’s web site has some more details on the wine.

Dark in color with a lovely nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays red berries and cherries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm tannins, some firm acidity and some nice dryness. The acidity lingers in the mouth with some nice mouth grip. The wine is a little young and could use either some breathing or some aging. I would give it an 89 or so. Quite nice.

SMALL GULLY THE FORMULA ROBERT’S SHIRAZ 2009

I last blogged about the 2008 vintage of this wine. So when I saw it back on the list I gave it a try. Dark in color with a milder nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some dark berries to match the nose. Even some blueberries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely black berries that stick around in the mouth along with some mild tannins and some acidity. This is a good wine, but after how good the 2008 was this is milder for sure. I would give it an 88-89. Very nice.

15.9% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Smooth Sugar Content: 5 g/L

Description
Sourced from 40-year-old vines, this wine has unquestionably nailed the formula for success. A perennial customer favourite, this powerfully built Shiraz will offer up rich dark fruit and big ripe tannins. A hefty and unabashed wine that will work very well with grilled or roasted meats.

CARPENÈ MALVOLTI CUVÉE BRUT CONEGLIANO VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE

Seasons greetings from Canadian Wine Guy and myself to you and your family. And to those of you that celebrate it, I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas. As we head towards New Years people often look towards bubbles to celebrate the event. Champagne can literally only come from France, legally speaking but if you see Cuve or Brut this often refers to the process of making the bubbly similar to Champagne. I can only imagine how many French people or Champagne lovers are cringing right now. Sorry …

Well if your on a budget, there are lots of bargain based bubblies to be had. Look to Italian Proseccos or Spanish Cavas. Proseccos tend to be dry crisp, lightly carbonated in in my humble opinion are very food friendly.

This one is pale in color with a nice crisp nose. On the mid pallet the wine is crisp and dry, with some minerality. The bubbles are nice and light as is common with Proseccos. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length on the finish leaving behind some mild citrus notes. The LCBO describe the style of this wine as light a fruity, and I would agree. This is definitely not an oustanding Prosecco, but not a bad one either. I would give it an 88 or so. For my money I would go with the last prosecco I rated Bottega over this one for similar money. As it is, I took the Bottega over to my family Christmas and before I knew it, it was all gone!

From the LCBO web site:
CARPENÈ MALVOLTI CUVÉE BRUT CONEGLIANO VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE VINTAGES 727438 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 15.95
Made in: Veneto, Italy By: Carpene Malvolti Spa
Release Date: Aug 31, 2013
Wine, Sparkling Wine, White 12.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Light & Fruity Sugar Content: 11 g/L

Tasting Note
Those who like their prosecco truly dry (count me in) should enjoy this bargain. The texture’s chalky (count me in again) and the flavour strongly hints at pear, sort of like a bone-dry perry cider. And there’s a note of mineral on the finish. Perfect as a stylish aperitif. Score – 91. (Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, Aug. 1, 2012)

2011 KILIKANOON KILLERMAN’S RUN SHIRAZ

Dark in color with a lovely nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays rich black berries to match the nose. Some blueberry, not quite jammy but close. This is backed immediately by some firm tannins and some nice spicy/peppery notes along with noticeable alcohol. Careful not to breath in when this is first opened 🙂 The wine eases quickly with even some bottle breathing. I left it for about 1/2 hour and it helped. A little ageing would help as well. This is a very nice varietal Aussie Shiraz. It does not disappoint. I would give it an 89-90. Not bad for the price! We paired it with filet mignon (and even marinated the steak in it) and it went VERY well!

Description
This full-tilt Shiraz is Kilikanoon’s idea of an entry-level wine. Some introduction! A hedonistic pleasure, it’s plush with blackberry jam, cherry and toasted oak. A bold match for barbecued spare ribs, spicy sausage pizza or grilled hanger steaks.

2010 Yealands Sauv blanc mini review

Pale in color with a big grassy nose with loads of grapefruit coming through. On the mid pallet the wine matches with nose. This is a bigger Sauv blanc with lots of tart grapefruit notes coming through along with some grassy on a medium length finish. This is definitely a boisterous wine. Lots going on. 89 or so. This wine is from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. Sadly not in the LCBO 🙁 We had it at Oliver and Bonacini as one of their wines by the glass at my Meetup group.

2012 Coffin Ridge Into the Light white

I last blogged about the Back from the Dead red which I tasted while at the winery. This wine is a blend of Geisenheim, Prarrie Star, Frontenac Gris, Wisconsin’s Elam Swinson, and Ministrel (or at least that was the notes I took at the winery). If you haven’t heard of a number of these, your not alone. I first encountered Geisenheim in Prince Edward county at Waupoos winery, and Frontenac Gris at Hoity Toity cellars that I blogged about a while back. Some of these grapes are coming from The University of Minnesota. They have come up with vines that can endure Canada’s extreme winters especially in places like where Coffin Ridge is. Which by the way is about half way between Collingwood and Owen sound. Pale in color with a slightly sweet nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some sweetness, a little bit of honey suckle (think Riesling) and some pear. The wine is on the lighter side of medium on the finish with some nice pear notes lingering. I would give it an 88. It’s available at the LCBO for $20 or at the winery.

DOWIE DOOLE CHENIN BLANC 2002

When I was in University one of the lessons we were taught is don’t let what you think you know get in the way of what you don’t … With that in mind I was asked to go through my friends wine that had been in the basement for a long time. This one was one of them. I was immediately sceptical that there was any chance of this being drinkable. I don’t think of a sweet fruit forward wine like this as being ageable. But then again a Riesling is one of THE most ageable wines. With that in mind I stuck this one in the fridge and proceeded to try it. The cork was fine when cracked, and the color on the wine was pale as it should be … hmmm. On the nose this wine has some sweetness and some alcohol not altogether out of place. On the mid pallet I was shocked that some of the fruit was still present. It was slightly sweet. There were some strong alcoholic notes present but this wine was indeed drinkable. I would not recommend leaving this wine that long but was pleasantly surprised at how ok it was. If I was to rate it I would give it an 85 or so.

From the LCBO web site for the current vintage:
DOWIE DOOLE CHENIN BLANC 2009 VINTAGES 709246 | 750 mL bottle Price: $ 16.95

Tasting Note
Unusually fragrant and crisp; from 70-year-old vines which do not show any impact of the vintage heat; notes of lemon and herb, with good acidity. Score – 89. (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, Sept. 2009)

2011 Cannonball Merlot

I last tasted the Cab Sauv as well as the Sauv Blanc from Cannonball so I was anxious to try the Merlot from them that was on the most recent release. I like the label it’s cute. As usual personal bias up front, I like my Merlot’s fruity, smooth and what I consider varietal. Dark in color with a nose of rich red berries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with lovely rich red berries coming through. Far more reminiscent to their cab IMHO than what I expect from a Merlot. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm tannins along with some acidity. This is a lovely wine, albeit in my mind more cab than Merlot. With that aside I would give it a solid 89. It should have some good life in it too. I would be surprised for it to continue to show well/improve over the next 2-5 years. Yumm. Especially given the price!

from the LCBO web site:

Tasting Note
This sure-fire hit is bursting with aromas and flavours of dark berries, chocolate-covered cherry and roasted herbs. Round and generous in the mouth, it’s a tasty reminder of Merlot’s fun-loving side. Fire up the autumn barbecue for this one and it’ll be all hands on deck. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)

2010 Stratus Syrah

Dark in color with a lovely nose of red berries waiting to greet you. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely red berries to match the nose. It’s reasonably complex. On the finish the wine displays a smooth finish, with some tannins and some nice dryness. All in all a pleasant food friend easy sipping wine. I would say they have correctly called this a Syrah vs a Shiraz. There’s no pepper at all on the finish. I would give it an 89 or so. Very nice. Now at $48 a bottle this one sure ain’t cheap. Yikes …

From the LCBO web site (for a different year than I tasted)
STRATUS SYRAH 2009 VINTAGES 307629 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 48.20
Made in: Ontario, Canada By: Stratus Vineyards Release Date: Feb 5, 2013

Tasting Note
Another collaboration wine between Hobbs and Groux. This is a difficult varietal in Niagara in the best of vintages but Stratus crops to less than a tonne an acre and made only a paltry 72 cases from the ’09 vintage. It’s a Rhone-style Syrah with a smoky, bacon-fat and peppery nose bolstered by raspberry and other red fruits, earth and forest floor notes. It is rousing on the palate with firm tannins, structure, spice and firm acidity through the finish. Drink or hold. Score – 90. (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, April 25, 2012)

Jargon Pinot Noir

I had this one at Ten Restaurant and wine bar as part of my wine meetup group. I forgot to note the year. Rookie mistake 🙁 Nice garnet in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely mild varietal fruits, strawberry and rustic notes, backed by some deep rich tannins and some nice dryness. I would give this an 89+. Yumm. Sadly not in the LCBO, and I can’t find the local distributor. Winery’s web site.

2011 Coffin Ridge Back from the Dead Red mini review

I blogged a little bit ago about a visit to Hoity Toity cellars just outside Walkerton. We stopped by Coffin Ridge just outside Collingwood to see what they are up to. I discovered they are doing some similar varietals to Hoity Toity. From the Frontenac Gris, to the Marquette. Grapes from the University of Minnesota. I last blogged about the 2010 Back from the Dead red and enjoyed it. In 2010 the wine was 100% Maréchal Foch. This time around it’s a blend of 78% Foch, 11% Merlot and 11% Cab Franc. The label identifies it as Cabernet. I asked them where they got the Cab/Merlot from and they said Niagara. So only the foch is local. It is a VQA wine. Dark in color with lots of dark berries on the nose. On the mid pallet the Niagara Cab Franc is dominant (which I love) with some nice dryness on the finish. The mid pallet has some lovely fruit forward notes. This is a lovely wine. I would give it a solid 89. But it is worth noting, IMHO the wine owes the majority of it’s yumminess to the Niagara Cab Franc 🙁

From the lcbo web site:

Tasting Note
The blend here is 80% Maréchal Foch, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet. Fresh and lively (despite the name!) with notions of currants, wild blueberry, plum and smoke. It’s juicy, fruity and lithe on the palate with a nice crisp acid backbone. Enjoy with autumn stews or lamb burgers. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2013)

2010 Parducci Cab

I last tasted the 2006 Vintage of this wine and enjoyed it so much I bought a case. I had this one at Oliver and Bonacini in Oakville place as part of a Wine Meetup. Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some mild red berries, cherries and the like to match the nose. On the finish the wine has some noticeable acidity, alcohol and tannins that quickly overwhelm the fruit. These fade in about half an hour or so in the glass allowing the lovely rich fruit flavors to come through. This wine needs to be decanted or aged longer. I would give it an 89 or so once it’s done breathing. Yumm! Sadly not available in the LCBO but you can buy it by the case from Trialto for $15.65 a bottle in cases of 12.

2012 Sterling Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay

I love chards. They are beautifully complex. A good Calfornia style chard and scallops are a match made in heaven. Yumm. This particular wine has been one of my long time favs. When the 2012 hit the shelves I was a little nervous as to whether it would keep up the reputation of the past. I last reviewed the 2010. This one is slightly golden in color with a varietal nose with some lovely chard fruit coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely varietal chard flavors. This is another good year. It’s not as buttery or creamy as past years. I would guess they have used less oaking on this one. I would give this a solid 89. Which for the price is a great deal. We paired it with … you guessed it scallops and it went well. Yay one of my favs is still one of my favs! This one does not seem to be as sensitive to temperature as past years were. Cold or room temp it’s equally good.

2011 Chilcas single vineyard Pinot Noir mini review

I tasted this one at the Chilean wine festival and it caught my attention as one of the stars of the event. Garnet in color with a lovely varietal pinot nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely smooth varietal strawberries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some smooth tannins, some nice dryness and some nice mouth grip. I would give it an 88-89 and it’s $17.95 a bottle. It’s available by the case from Via wines
