CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE CHARDONNAY 2011

Pale in color with a with a mild nose of apples. On the mid palate the wine displays some solid apple flavors along with some firm acidity. On the long finish the wine displays some varietal chard flavors but the strong acidity is dominant. The wine lingers nicely in the mouth. I would give this an 88 or so. Not a bad wine, but there are better ones for the money.

2009 Parducci Pinot

I had this wine at Rodney’s Oyster bar. Garnet in color with a mild rustic nose. On the mid pallet are some light red berry notes, some strawberry comes to mind. On the lighter side of medium in finish the wine has some light mouth grip along with some tannins. This is a smooth well made lighter pinot. We paired it with raw Oysters and it went very well. I would give it an 88-89. The wine is $14 a bottle at the winery, sadly not in the LCBO. Trialto reps Parducci in Ontario if you want to buy a case.

From the Winery’s web site:
Tasting Notes

Our Pinot Noir offers aromas of juicy, ripe raspberries and strawberries. Its berry flavors are full and rich on the palate, picking up a hint of cedar in the finish.

2012 Cannonball sauv blanv mini review

I had a small sampling of this wine when we were at Rodney’s Oyster bar. I previously had the Cab Sauv from these guys and enjoyed it. Pale in color with a lovely grassy nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays grassy notes to match the nose along with some citrus. The wine is medium in length on the finish with some nice mouth grip. I would give it an 89. Rep’d in Ontario byRogers and Company.

From the winery’s web site:
Our 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect convergence of the varietal’s unique qualities. All of the fruit comes from our home here in Sonoma County, specifically Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley. Layers of soft mineral, honeysuckle, guava, mandarin, and lemongrass fill the nose. On the palate, flavors of honeydew melon, white peach, and Meyer lemon surround a good structure and a vibrant core acidity. Expect a mouth feel that is supple with a finish that lingers, tempting you for more.

NAPA CELLARS ZINFANDEL 2011

I love Zinfandels. A lot of people only know them as pink blush wines. But then they are missing the best that Zinfs have to offer. A deep rich fold fruit forward wine. Well some of them anyway. This one is dark in color with a lovely nose of dark berries and some oak. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with dark berries and some lovely fruity notes. Not sweet at all. Not jammy as some are. On the long finish the wine displays some firm tannins and a bit of a peppery note. The wine has some lovely mouth grip. I would give it a solid 89-90. It’s a bit young and should improve nicely in a year or two as it softens. Yumm. Pair it with steaks lamb or other hearty meats!

2009 Villasenor Ensamblaje mini review

Another one of the stars from the Chilean wine show. Dark in color with a mild nose, cab sauv like. On the pallet the wine displays a nice melody of fruit. You can actually pick out a number of the grapes from the blend. The cab sauv, the Carménère are both noticeable. Some lovely rich berry flavors. On the finish the wine has some nice dryness, some nice mouth grip, and some nice peppery notes coming from the Syrah. This is a lovely wine. I would give it 89-90. It’s not in the LCBO but is available on consignment at $30 a bottle by the case. Very nice.

CHÂTEAU ROLAND LA GARDE 2009

Anytime I see a Bordeaux under $20 it catches my eye. And this one was recommended by a friend. Inky dark in color with a mild nose of red berries oak and some earthy notes. On the mid pallet the wine displays some smooth rich dark berries. Like most Bordeauxs this wine lives in the finish. And so it does. It’s got some lovely velvety tannins, some oak along with some mild acidity. The wine coats the mouth nicely and leaves a flavor of dark berries that lives on in a long finish. This is indeed a very nice wine. Especially given the price. It should easily keep 5 years. I would give it a solid 89-90. Yumm. I bought some extra for the cellar! Thanks Gerry!

Kim Crawford 2012 pinot noir

Pinot Noirs are one of those lovem or hatem wines. I enjoy them! This one is Garnet in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet are some lovely varietal strawberry notes along with some rustic flavors. There’s some nice complexity on the mid pallet especially if you hold it in your mouth for a bit. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely light dryness along with some tannins. There’s some nice mouth grip to this wine as it lives on in the mouth. A lovely pinot. I would give it an 89-90. Very nice.

AZELIA BAROLO 2009 mini review

I tasted this one at the Trialto Top Drops tasting event. They had double decanted it and it had been open for about 6 hours. Even with this the wine caught my attention! Dark in color with a mild nose of dried berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dried fruits to match the nose, consistent with a Barolo. On the long finish the wine displays some typical super dryness, some nice tannins and some acidity, all of which live on nicely in the mouth as a Barolo should! It’ s a lovely well made Barolo. The fruit was kind of subdued but I suspect this is because of the length of time it was open before I got to taste it. I would give it a 90+ even as I tasted it. I’d love to taste this right out of the bottle. This year is worth $40.95 and will be released Dec 7th 2013. That’s not a bad price for a well made Barolo! I’ll be keeping an eye on this one!

From the LCBO web site (for a different year):

Tasting Note
Perfumed and almost smoky with plum and berry undertones. Then turns to flowers. Full body, with rich and velvety tannins and a solid core of fruit. Dried strawberries and prunes. Rich and beautiful. Amazing quality for the blended Barolo from here. From vines of 70 percent Serralunga and 30 percent Castiglione Falleto. Score – 94. (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, May 9, 2011)

TENUTA DI TRECCIANO CHIANTI COLLI SENESI 2011

I’ve had a number of people say to me lately that they don’t like Chianti which kind of surprises me. There are good wines and bad wines in every category. Chianti’s are made from the Sangiovese grape which is almost exclusively to Italy. This one is dark in color with a subtle nose. On the mid palate the wine display some love red berries backed by some lovely smooth tannins and some nice dryness. This is a nice well made wine for the price. Food friendly. It can hold up easily to a steak or any red meat. We paired it up with Venison and it went very well. I would give it an solid 89. Very nice and a bargain for the price. Scoop up what you can of this on, it should give a good couple years. Yumm!

2012 Trius Sauv Blanc

It’s been a bit since I reviewed this wine so I decided to give it a whirl as I passed by the wine store at the grocery store. Pale in color with a nice nose of grapefruit and some grassy notes. On the mid pallet the wine displays grapefruit to match the nose. The flavor is by no means sharp like some. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length on the finish. I would give the wine an 88-89. Very nice and quite food friendly. We paired it with seared ahi tuna with sesame oil and soya sauce and it went well. I always find sauv blancs are good choice for meals with an Asian lean to them and this one was no exception.

HENRY OF PELHAM FAMILY TREE RED 2010

Sometimes when a wine is heavily blended, as this wine is, you loose the individuality of the varietals. Not in this case … Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries not giving a lot away to what’s to come. On the mid palet this wine is dominated by some lovely varietal Niagara style cab franc. Some nice red berries. There’s also some traditional Niagara cab sauv earthy notes. On the finish the wine displays some lovely spicy notes consistent with a Shiraz. There’s also some nice dryness and some velvety tannins. This wine really shows off the blend. According to the bottle it is 58% Shiraz, 17% Cab Sauv, 15% Cab Franc (it’s amazing how little cab franc it takes to dominate the flavor) and 10% Merlot. Of all these I didn’t get much off the Merlot. This is a lovely wine. Very approachable now and will likely keep for a while too. I would give this wine a 89-90. Very nice. And quite food friendly. Yumm.

Tasting Note
This fresh, juicy blend – primarily Shiraz with Cab Sauv, Cab Franc and Merlot – sports a lifted nose of dark berry fruit, rich cherry and roasted herbs. It rolls over the palate in endless, delicious waves with black plum and currant interlaced with boysenberry and spice. It’s mid weight with good mouth feel and a balanced, fruit-laden finish. What’s not to like? Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Oct. 24, 2012)

Family Tree celebrates the idea of family. These wines are made from fruit sourced off of our own vineyards but also those of our friends, neighbours and distant cousins across the Niagara Peninsula. There is no one grape variety in each wine. Instead they reflect the best fruit from each site married with other complimentary grape varieties from neighbouring vineyards. In this way we have created easy going wines of sophistication that are a reflection of the people and place that they come from.

BOCCHINO L’AURELIO NEBBIOLO D’ALBA 2010

Ah the Nebbiolo grape which is at the heart of the big Italian wine the Barolos! But then you can’t afford to drink a Barolo every night. Well I can’t. So I grabbed this one, I was curious. And when Vic spoke so highly about it (below) … It’s got that varietal almost soft garnet color to it. On the nose wine is kind of mild non-descript. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely black fruits backed by some lovely dry tannins and pallet coating notes. It builds very nicely in the mouth with some nice complexity and deep rich black berries living on. This is definitely a wine that lives in the medium length finish. It’s quite food friendly. I would give it a solid 89. Yumm.

Tasting Note
Mint, blueberry and new leather aromas on the nose, this dishes up a lovely array of ripe fruit on the palate – tangy, juicy black currant, dark plum compote and dark cherry. It’s rich and complex with a mid-full body and extended finish showcasing briary berry and toasty notes underpinned by a solid tannin structure. Drink 2014 to 2019. If impatient – aerate/decant three hours pouring with smoked, grilled back ribs or a prime cut of grilled beef. Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Dec. 4, 2012)

2007 J. Lohr Riverstone Chard

About 5 years ago I decided to try a little experiment and put away this chard. To see if it would keep, and maybe improve. Last night curiosity got the best of me and I pulled it out of the cellar. When I put this on the counter I didn’t give my GF any hints of what was unique about it. She looked at it and then mused … “It’s old” 🙂

Out of the fridge the nose is exceptionally mild. Giving away nothing of what’s to come. Golden in color with a thicker texture to the wine. On the mid pallet bam, there we are a lovely buttery rich, creamy California style chard. It’s creamy in texture and round in the mouth. A glass of happy. The wine is medium in length leaving some lovely mild caramel notes. The nose opened up as it warmed as did the wine’s depth. I would give this a 91 and would say the wine improved nicely. I am not sure how much longer this might keep. We paired it with grilled scallops and it went perfectly. For me scallops and a California style chard is a perfect match! I have a few other chards in the cellar can’t wait to try them out. If your going to do this, IMHO oaked chards will do better than unoaked.

ST. HALLETT BLACKWELL SHIRAZ 2008

My sister gave me this wine as a present! Inky dark in color almost black with a lovely nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely varietal black berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some varietal spicy, peppery notes, along with some tannins. PRINSI GAIA PRINCIPE BARBARESCO 2007 mini review

I enjoy Barbarescos. They are made with the Nebbiolo grape just like it’s big brother a Barolo. I always refer to them as the poor mans Barolo 🙂 They have some lovely complexity and dryness to them!

This one is lighter in color with some noticeable browning around the edges of the glass. A little unusual. On the mid pallet the wine displays some dried fruits along with some red fruits. Barbarescos live in the finish and this one is no exception. It is super dry with lovely pucker power, unfortunately backed by firm acidity. The fruit on this particular wine is quite subdued. This isn’t a great Barbaresco by any means. I would give it an 88 or so. For $7 less I would grab the CASTELLO DI NEIVE BARBARESCO DOCG LCBO 160143 Price $ 20.50 which is an essential so readily available. It’s one of my favs!

CHÂTEAU CROIX-MOUTON 2009

Any time I see a Bordeaux rated well, for under $20 I jump at it. In this case the wine was late to the release date making it a whole lot easier than usual to be able to find it! Dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries and oak. On the mid pallet the dominant cab franc is really clear. Lots of lovely dark berries to match the nose along with some oak and some chocolate. Like most good Bordeauxs this one is all about the finish where the wine displays a medium length finish some nice dryness, some tannins and some peppery/spicy notes. I would give this one an 89-90. It ought to have some longevity too! Yumm!

CHÂTEAU CROIX-MOUTON 2009 VINTAGES 192120 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 19.85
Made in: Bordeaux, France By: Nath. Johnston & Fils
Release Date: Aug 17, 2013
13.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Smooth Varietal: Merlot/Cabernet Franc Sugar Content: 4 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Tasting Note
A big-time sleeper in this vintage, this dense purple wine from Jean-Philippe Janoueix over-delivers for its humble pedigree. A blend of 86% Merlot and the rest mostly Cabernet Franc, it is a surprisingly big wine (over 14% alcohol) with notes of smoky barbecue, kirsch, blackberries, coffee and cassis. Luscious tannins, low acidity and a textured, multi-dimensional mouthfeel make for an impressive Bordeaux Superieur. Drink it over the next 3-5 years. Score – 90. QUAILS’ GATE PINOT NOIR 2011

Pinot Noirs are one of those love em or hate em varietals. I quite enjoy them. When I saw this one from Okanagan I was curious. The review drew my attention. Darker in color than a typical Pinot, with an earthy note along with some rustic notes. This is very interesting and alluring nose. Draws me in … On the mid pallet this wine is kind of sneaky. At first it has some mild cab like notes of cherries. A more typical fruit forward pinot would display strawberries and raspberries. The wine builds in the mouth revealing some more typical rustic notes. There’s a hint of red berry sweetness there backed on the medium length finish by nice firm tannins and some nice dryness. This wine is quite interesting in it’s layers. I would give it a solid 89-90. Quite a good pinot if you like pinots.

Tasting Note
This is the Pinot Noir to drink now while waiting for the reserve to be ready. This wine has a fine dark hue. It begins with attractive aromas of cherry, raspberry and mocha, leading to bright cherry flavours, with mocha and toasty oak subtly on the finish. The texture is already showing the classic velvet of the variety. Score – 90. (John Schreiner, johnschreiner.blogspot.com, April 14, 2013)

AGOSTINO INICIO MALBEC 2011

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark berries to match the nose. This is a big malbec. On the finish the wine displays some strong firm tannins, some acidity along with some spicy notes. This is a bigger malbec. I would give this one an 88-89. For the money it’s a good deal!

Tasting Note
The 2011 Inicio Malbec from Maipu is aged for six months in used American and French oak. It has a very composed bouquet that is well-defined, offering perfumed mulberry and dark plum fruit that billow with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannins, very crisp acidity and attractive strawberry and cassis flavors towards the harmonious finish. This is astounding quality for the price. Drink now-2016. Score – 91. (Neal Martin, erobertparker.com, Oct. 2012)

Trius 2011 Red

I’ve had this wine from a number of vintages so didn’t hesitate to blindly grab this one. Dark in color with a mild nose of rich red berries coming through. The nose gives little hint of what’s to come. On the mid pallet the wine displays big bold rich red berries. Some black cherries definitely coming through. The cab franc which Niagara does so well is prominently displayed in this wine. On the long finish the wine displays some firm tannins, some lovely dryness, some nice spicy notes and some mouth coating flavors leaving behind some lovely rich black cherries that live on in the mouth. This is a big wine for sure. Make sure your pairing it up with something hearty or not a chance your tasting the food. Yumm. This is a classic Niagara bold rich red. But thankfully, there’s none of those classic Niagara earthy notes coming through. I would give this an 89-90.. And this puppy should have lots of longevity to it too. Easily 2-5 years IMHO.

2009 Rodney Strong Cab Sauv mini review

I tasted this one at the LCBO tasting bar. When I have mini review on the title it means I only had a small sample to do the tasting rather than a bottle to do a more thorough review. It also means I didn’t do a food pairing with it.

Dark in color with a mild red berry nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely red berries to go along with the nose. But this is whacked pretty quickly by some firm acidity. On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins along with some peppery spicy notes. The acidity lingers in the mouth. I suspect some breathing or aging might give the fruit in the wine a fighting chance of being noticed. I would give this wine an 88 or so as it is right now. The description on the LCBO web site is so different than mine it makes me wonder if we tasted the same wine?

RODNEY STRONG CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009 VINTAGES 226944 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 19.95
Made in: California, USA By: Rodney Strong Vineyards
13.8% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Firm Sugar Content: 7 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: D – Dry

Tasting Note
One of the best-ever versions of this wine. Both elegant and complex in style, it is full bodied, well balanced, and very long on the finish, with modest tannins; truly Bordeaux-like (in the best sense of the term). It tastes of plum, cassis, cherry, vanilla, and toast. Drink: 2014-2016. Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). (Restaurant Wine Newsletter, July-Dec. 2012)
