2010 Hess Select Cab Sauv mini review

Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice black berries. On the medium length finish there are some tannins, some dryness, along with some noticeable acidity. This is a good wine but not a great one. Some breathing might help it out some. I would give it an 88 or so.

2012 ERRAZURIZ SAUVIGNON BLANC

Pale in color with a varietal grassy nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays grassy notes to match the nose. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with a smooth food friendly finish. This is a varietal well made sauv blanc. There’s some nice mouth grip that builds nicely in the mouth! We paired it with a fettuccine lobster alfredo and it went well. I would give it an 88-89. For the price it’s a bargain!

ST. HALLETT BLACKWELL SHIRAZ 2008

My sister gave me this wine as a present! Inky dark in color almost black with a lovely nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely varietal black berries to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some varietal spicy, peppery notes, along with some tannins. The alcohol is still quite noticeable. It could do with some more aging or breathing. I would give it an 89-90 or so … We paired it with a fillet mignon and it held up VERY well. Perfect pairing! Thanks Catherine!

PRINSI GAIA PRINCIPE BARBARESCO 2007 mini review

I enjoy Barbarescos. They are made with the Nebbiolo grape just like it’s big brother a Barolo. I always refer to them as the poor mans Barolo 🙂 They have some lovely complexity and dryness to them!

This one is lighter in color with some noticeable browning around the edges of the glass. A little unusual. On the mid pallet the wine displays some dried fruits along with some red fruits. Barbarescos live in the finish and this one is no exception. It is super dry with lovely pucker power, unfortunately backed by firm acidity. The fruit on this particular wine is quite subdued. This isn’t a great Barbaresco by any means. I would give it an 88 or so. For $7 less I would grab the CASTELLO DI NEIVE BARBARESCO DOCG LCBO 160143 Price $ 20.50 which is an essential so readily available. It’s one of my favs!

Tasting Note
High-class oak adds toasty, smoky notes to the cherry and plum flavors in this stylish red, which is a bit made up, though successfully, with a long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2022. Score – 91. (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, April 30, 2012)

CHÂTEAU CROIX-MOUTON 2009

Any time I see a Bordeaux rated well, for under $20 I jump at it. In this case the wine was late to the release date making it a whole lot easier than usual to be able to find it! Dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries and oak. On the mid pallet the dominant cab franc is really clear. Lots of lovely dark berries to match the nose along with some oak and some chocolate. Like most good Bordeauxs this one is all about the finish where the wine displays a medium length finish some nice dryness, some tannins and some peppery/spicy notes. I would give this one an 89-90. It ought to have some longevity too! Yumm!

CHÂTEAU CROIX-MOUTON 2009 VINTAGES 192120 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 19.85
Made in: Bordeaux, France By: Nath. Johnston & Fils
Release Date: Aug 17, 2013
13.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Smooth Varietal: Merlot/Cabernet Franc Sugar Content: 4 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Tasting Note
A big-time sleeper in this vintage, this dense purple wine from Jean-Philippe Janoueix over-delivers for its humble pedigree. A blend of 86% Merlot and the rest mostly Cabernet Franc, it is a surprisingly big wine (over 14% alcohol) with notes of smoky barbecue, kirsch, blackberries, coffee and cassis. Luscious tannins, low acidity and a textured, multi-dimensional mouthfeel make for an impressive Bordeaux Superieur. Drink it over the next 3-5 years. Score – 90. QUAILS’ GATE PINOT NOIR 2011

Pinot Noirs are one of those love em or hate em varietals. I quite enjoy them. When I saw this one from Okanagan I was curious. The review drew my attention. Darker in color than a typical Pinot, with an earthy note along with some rustic notes. This is very interesting and alluring nose. Draws me in … On the mid pallet this wine is kind of sneaky. At first it has some mild cab like notes of cherries. A more typical fruit forward pinot would display strawberries and raspberries. The wine builds in the mouth revealing some more typical rustic notes. There’s a hint of red berry sweetness there backed on the medium length finish by nice firm tannins and some nice dryness. This wine is quite interesting in it’s layers. I would give it a solid 89-90. Quite a good pinot if you like pinots.

Tasting Note
This is the Pinot Noir to drink now while waiting for the reserve to be ready. This wine has a fine dark hue. It begins with attractive aromas of cherry, raspberry and mocha, leading to bright cherry flavours, with mocha and toasty oak subtly on the finish. The texture is already showing the classic velvet of the variety. Score – 90. (John Schreiner, johnschreiner.blogspot.com, April 14, 2013)

AGOSTINO INICIO MALBEC 2011

Dark in color with a nose of black berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays dark berries to match the nose. This is a big malbec. On the finish the wine displays some strong firm tannins, some acidity along with some spicy notes. This is a bigger malbec. I would give this one an 88-89. For the money it’s a good deal!

Tasting Note
The 2011 Inicio Malbec from Maipu is aged for six months in used American and French oak. It has a very composed bouquet that is well-defined, offering perfumed mulberry and dark plum fruit that billow with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannins, very crisp acidity and attractive strawberry and cassis flavors towards the harmonious finish. This is astounding quality for the price. Trius 2011 Red

I’ve had this wine from a number of vintages so didn’t hesitate to blindly grab this one. Dark in color with a mild nose of rich red berries coming through. The nose gives little hint of what’s to come. On the mid pallet the wine displays big bold rich red berries. Some black cherries definitely coming through. The cab franc which Niagara does so well is prominently displayed in this wine. On the long finish the wine displays some firm tannins, some lovely dryness, some nice spicy notes and some mouth coating flavors leaving behind some lovely rich black cherries that live on in the mouth. This is a big wine for sure. Make sure your pairing it up with something hearty or not a chance your tasting the food. Yumm. This is a classic Niagara bold rich red. But thankfully, there’s none of those classic Niagara earthy notes coming through. I would give this an 89-90.. And this puppy should have lots of longevity to it too. Easily 2-5 years IMHO.

2009 Rodney Strong Cab Sauv mini review

I tasted this one at the LCBO tasting bar. When I have mini review on the title it means I only had a small sample to do the tasting rather than a bottle to do a more thorough review. It also means I didn’t do a food pairing with it.

Dark in color with a mild red berry nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely red berries to go along with the nose. But this is whacked pretty quickly by some firm acidity. On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins along with some peppery spicy notes. The acidity lingers in the mouth. I suspect some breathing or aging might give the fruit in the wine a fighting chance of being noticed. I would give this wine an 88 or so as it is right now. The description on the LCBO web site is so different than mine it makes me wonder if we tasted the same wine?

Tasting Note
One of the best-ever versions of this wine. Both elegant and complex in style, it is full bodied, well balanced, and very long on the finish, with modest tannins; truly Bordeaux-like (in the best sense of the term). It tastes of plum, cassis, cherry, vanilla, and toast. Drink: 2014-2016. Score – 4 Stars (out of 5). (Restaurant Wine Newsletter, July-Dec. 2012)

Hoity Toity Cellars Dusty White Glove 2011

A while back I discovered Carrick winery at an Ontario wine tasting event. The winery is located just outside Mildmay Ontario, the only wnery in the area and a long way from the where most people would think of as a wine region. Sometimes the stories you discover when you visit a place like this! It turns out the owner did some research and discovered that Minnesota has very similar growing conditions to Mildmay so the owner decided to plant varietals from The University of Minnesota. Of this presents a ton of challenges. The grapes are not something most people (including me) have heard of. When they approached the LCBO they discovered there already was a Carrick and so were “encouraged” to change there name and thus they now are called Hoity Toity Cellars. They have also discovered since they are not using specific varietals (and likely not in an AVA) they will not be able to get VQA for their wines.

I was surprised at the dizzying array wines and ciders they are offering.

This one is kind or slightly orange in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some mild peach flavors, a hint of honey suckle, along with a bit of minerality. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with some minerality lingering. This is a light refreshing wine but not overly complex. We paired it with a bacon quiche and it went fine. I would give the wine an 88. $16 at the winery.

From the winery’s web site:
Dusty White Glove 750 ml This is our slight off-dry white wine, possessing a sharp citrus flavour. This wine appeals to both the palate and the eye with it’s unique blush colour that develops with age. Similar in style to a Reisling. Serve cold along with high acid foods.

COLUMBIA CREST H3 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010

I’ve had a number of wines from Washington state as part of my membership in Society for American wines and been impressed. Even had a number of Columbia Crest wines and also been impressed. So when I saw this one on the list I grabbed it.

Dark in color with a mild nose of rich red berries. On the mid pallet right out of the bottle the wine starts out with some rich bold red berries but then quickly get’s overwhelmed by some firm acidity. A bit of time in the decanter dialed down the acidity and revealed rich red berries and some lovely mocha. The wine is medium in length with some fine tannins. We paired it with hamburgers and it went well. I would give it a solid 89. I can totally believe it will keep a while. I think it’s a it young right now. Yumm. And according to the review this is a good wine for ageing!

EIDOSELA ALBARIÑO 2011

Very pale in color with a mild citrus nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays a mild citrus, lemony flavor consistent with the nose. This is a smooth lighter style Abanrino with a medium finish and some nice acidity that lingers in the mouth. This is a very food friendly wine. I would give it an88 or so. Not bad for the price. We paired it with Shrimp fettuccine Alfredo and it held up well.

Tasting Note
Light yellow. Expressive aromas of green apple, quince and lemon curd, with a strong mineral overtone. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering spicy orchard fruit flavors that are lifted by zesty acidity and a touch of white pepper. Closes with impressive clarity and length, leaving a spicy note behind. Great value here. Score – 90. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Sept. 2012)

FREIXENET CORDON NEGRO BRUT

I must admit I rarely use to drink bubbly wines but have recently come to appreciate them. For some meals they really do pair very well. Quiche, some fish etc. And they don’t have to be expensive. Italian prosecco’s for example and in this case, Spanish cava. Pale in color with a mild nose with some citrus and minerally notes. On the mid pallet this is a dry wine, with nice fine bubbles making it food friendly. There’s some light citrus notes and some minerality. It’s a mild wine with a finish on the lighter side of medium. I would give it an 88 or so. Not bad for the price. We paired it with a perfectly cooked pan fried pickerel and it went very well. Thanks Raines 🙂

Wellness with Withings & Jawbone

Warning: the CWG site, on occasion, wanders from wine and food into “off-topic” posts, this is one of those. This one is long too…

Personal wellness devices are a hot topic these days on technology and fitness websites. Most people have seen one of their friends or coworkers with a rubber ‘doo-hickey’ on their wrists spouting off about the virtues of knowing how long they slept for and how many steps they took. With a fitbit here or a fuel there these things are proliferating North America in 2013. My first personal encounter with one was the Jawbone UP on the wrist of one of my bright consultants and once addressing this odd thing the ‘seed’ was planted, I was thinking about electronic wellness devices.

So a little about me to write the correct picture, I use to be athletic, some may even say an athlete (they are kind). I say ‘use to be’ as over the past few years I have been more consumer than exert-er. Consumer of wine, beer, steak, buttery things, savory things, scotches and what not. My body was more minivan than it was formula one racecar. The word spare-tire was created for what existed around my former waist. So I went from being a competitive ice hockey (I put ice there as some people actually need the clarity) and soccer (for those same people) player who also competed in everything from rowing to squash, to a non-athelete. While it was very difficult for me to admit it, I was fat. Further this, the numbers did not lie as I am 178cm (5’9″) and i use to weigh 81Kg (179lb) in my competitive days, but the scale sure looked like 92 Kg (202) in the hotel back in mid June of this year. Yes the scale confirmed I was fat and that children, is not phat, I was very much the uncool version of the word.

With the stark realization that the scale between my feet was not lying to me I decided to do something about it. The seed had grown to a full out tree and I realized that being a competitive person meant I needed more than a new wardrobe to spur me on to losing weight, getting fit, and maybe extending my life by a few years. Since part of these wellness devices drawing power is the social aspect I knew that the people around me would get sucked in and I’d be able to compete against them, the plan was hatched. Upon my return from that business trip I realized I had been beaten to the punch as a friend had already started wearing a Jawbone UP and had bought a wifi enabled scale that integrated into the UP world called a Withings ‘Smart Body Analyzer’. The race was on, sort of. The scale that day I stepped onto said 91.3 Kg (201 lb), I went out immediately and bought a Jawbone UP from my local Apple store as that was the only place that sold them.

The Jawbone UP is a rubber bracelet that using a motion sensing device to track your steps and sleep. If you search it online you will find many many articles about the good and bad of the device (honestly it seems every tech site has a review up in the past few months). While they have two major contributors, Nike Fuel and Fitbit, the people around me had decided this was the device best suited to them, and again, there is a social aspect to this that cannot be ignored. When I say social I mean they can see as little or as much as you care to share, which is quite beneficial. I chose to share all the defaults, which means my sleep and my activities. With six total friends in my network, having them see when i sleep in, or do a third of my activity is more than enough to get me moving.

UP-1UP-2

If the lack activity was one of getting me motivated, getting the wifi scale from Withings furthered this. Weighing in every morning and broadcasting in your UP application the weight and fat % is downright influential. As shown above there is no hiding from your weight, and while it fluctuates normal for everyone, the trend lines paint a clear picture to all your friends.

So with these two devices I was ready to reach for the stars (and maybe my toes a few times). Well I will follow up below with more details on the good and the bad, what I did and so on, but first off let me state my goal: I wanted to hit 81.6 Kg (180 lbs) by August 23rd, 2 months and 2 days after I got the Withings scale and 2 months and 4 days after I weighed the 92 Kgs (202 lbs) in that fateful weigh in. Tough goal? Yes! Realistic? I really was not sure, it was ~ 10 Kg (22 lbs) in just over 60 days, and even though I was fat I knew it would be tough to do. So the results must be clear as I type this on August 21st, but if you need the visual, I provide to you the following:

goal day_small

So I obviously made the target of 81.6 Kg and in all reality, by the time I got on the scale on June 21st I was already down to 90.3 Kg, so it is more like I dumped 9 Kg from my fatty frame. Still I’d say that 9 Kg or to be accurate 19.3 lbs in 61 days is probably considered good. So what did I do and who did these tools help me get there? Read on…

First let me isolate what I did NOT do. I did not diet (So this is the Food portion). No dieting at all. Did I watch what I ate a bit closer? Yes. Was I cautious about alcohol consumption? Yes. Did I diet? No. In the past 61 days I have done a 10 day trip to Australia to both Sydney and the outback (Cobar), I had two business trips to Vancouver, one to Winnipeg as well as one to Prince George. On these trips, for the most part, I ate and drank to excess at least 50% of the time. Was I always pleased with my eating choices? Not overly, but part of my evenings are filled with spending time with local teams and 100% of the time I had no cooking time or ability, so everything was eating out. Add to this as well, while not on a trip I went through selling my condo and living in a temporary setting while still doing several dinners at friends houses, all of which led to normal eating. As I indicated, I was more careful with food choices despite all this, this meant cutting out the snacking in my offices, eating something relatively more healthy for lunch, and dropping out all things not wine, vodka and water, with an emphasis on water, in terms of beverages. I found this awareness really did influence me to make wiser choices something I was not sure would happen. So to summarize: I made better choices, cut out some booze consumption, but I DID NOT diet.

Next up was how do I take these neat little devices that can do as little or as much as I’d like them to do and make them work with my new found interest in not being fat. Well for the UP I decided that 12,000 steps a day and not the 10,000 suggested would probably be sufficient for me. I did this knowing that an aggressive goal like 10 Kg is difficult to get to without proper exercise and diet (which I was unwilling to really do). Another thing I decided I wanted the UP to do was tell me whenever I was inactive for 30 minutes while awake. So every 30 minutes my wrist buzzes and reminds me that fat does not melt off without activity. This feature is very useful and easy to ignore at the same time. It is useful because it reminds you to get up and do something which is actually easy enough to do 60-70% of the time. It is also easy to ignore if you are in a meeting, as it is just a single buzz and it is relatively gentle. Other than those two adjustments, I allowed UP to report everything I did when I sync’d , and I linked the UP to my Withings application/account and to RunKeeper application/account. I tracked activities and my sleep, but outside of a good visualization the real value for the UP band is the constant movement it motivates you to do. A note for those with an interest in sleep and sleep tracking: the UP does a very good job, but it is not perfect, it is however a great tool to give you insight to how you sleep and sleep is very important in your overall well-being.

The Withings wifi scale was easy to use and really needed nothing more than connecting it to wifi and UP then being very diligent on when and how often you weighed yourself. In my case every morning while i was home, either before or after dog walk. I found the body fat % fluctuated too much to be considered accurate, but its variances could only ever be truly observed if you underwent caliper measurements regularly. The resting heart rate for some can be very enlightening as it is a good indication to the healthy status of your heart. What I can tell you is my heart rate dropped as I got healthier. You should know your resting heart rate and you should know how it relates to your health, this tool helps make it easy for you.

The last tool I used was RunKeeper and it became a much bigger tool for me later on in this two month process. RunKeeper is a great application which is free and helps you track your running, walking, cycling and so on. It uses the GPS in your phone to map for you, it can tell you your split times, it can do intervals. Overall it is a great tool if you decide to run to get in shape.

So what activity did I do that complimented my new found interest in my eating habits? I ran and walked while doing pushups and situps every day. The walking was easy, I have a dog, when I am home I walk him in the morning for 30-45 minutes and in the evenings for the same. That walking alone would aid most people in losing weight and is simply a great way to get outside and be active. The running was not as easy, as to be honest, I do not love running. While I like the results of running the actual running has never been high on my list of fun things to do. However, the results are hard to beat: run and you lose weight (well fat at least). I averaged in the last month 20 kms a week in running and it was the difference between moderate weight loss and drastic. The pushups and situps did a great job at the flabby bits that should not be while adding good strength. Amazingly I was not injured once in 61 days, which for me is maybe a first. Despite being on the wrong side of 40 outside of a few ibuprofens on achy days I got through the past 2 months without any major going wrong.

So to summarize as this has been a long winded post: The Jawbone UP and Withings Wifi scale helped me stay focused and interested in getting fit. They are merely tools that you can either use or ignore, but they cannot get you walking, running or swimming by themselves. Without them I doubt I would have made my personal goal, and as such, I plan on continuing to use them on an ongoing basis to remind me not to get fat again. I am very happy that I feel better, look better (was not hard) and hopefully I will live a few days longer because of them. Finally, beyond my gratitude towards the tools is the thanks I have for all those around me that dealt with a near obsession on this project, without them and that social aspect, I am not sure I would have succeeded. Cheers.

2010 Decoy Cab Sauv

Dark in color with a nose of red and black berries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with bold rich red and black berries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm acidity, some nice tannins along with some pepper, spice and acidity. I would give it an 88-89. A very nice wine but pricey.

From the LCBO web site:
DECOY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010 VINTAGES 186171 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 29.95
Made in: California, USA By: Duckhorn Wine Company
Release Date: Jun 8, 2013
13.9% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Smooth Sugar Content: 7 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: D – Dry

Description
The iconic Duckhorn is quack – er, back – with the estate’s exceptionally well-priced second wine.

Tasting Note
Decadent aromas of spiced plum, dark cherry, cassis, mocha and woodsmoke grab your attention before this ripe, round, succulent Cabernet splashes down (see what we did there?) on the palate with big intensity yet a super-soft touch – a velvet fist in a velvet glove. Drifts to a long, smooth, generously fruity finish with a tangy/smoky flourish. Enjoy over the next decade with leg of lamb or grilled steaks. (VINTAGES panel, April 2013)

CUVELIER LOS ANDES COLECCIÓN 2009

This wine is 59% Mablbec, 15% Cab Sauv, 16% Merlot, 5% Syrah, and 5% Petit Verdot so a Bordeaux blend style of wine. Inky dark in color with a nose of black berries and some oak. On the mid pallet the fruit is overwhelmed by strong tannins, firm acidity and big dryness on a long finish. Even with aerating this wine is BIG. After a good hour of breathing and aerating the firmness eases to reveal some black berries and some richness. Even to the point of slightly jammy. I’m not sure if I’d say this wine is too young or not but it is big. I would give it an 88 or so. You better pair this one with something that can hold it’s own or your tasting nothing but this wine.

From the LCBO web site:
CUVELIER LOS ANDES COLECCIÓN 2009 VINTAGES 144014 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 21.95
Made in: Mendoza, Argentina By: Cuvelier Los Andes S.A.
Release Date: Dec 8, 2012
15.0% Alcohol/Vol. Sugar Content: 2 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Description
Cuvelier Los Andes is owned by Bertrand and Jean-Guy Cuvelier, part-owners of Château Léoville-Poyferré in Bordeaux. The consulting winemaker is Michel Rolland.

Tasting Note
Purple in color, with a brooding bouquet, it is a dense, structured, rich wine with impeccable balance, volume, and length. It has the structure to evolve for 2-3 years but can be approached now. It, too, is a great value. Score – 92. (Jay Miller, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2011)

MAZZEI BADIOLA 2010

Dark in color with a mild nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some dark berries, some mocha and some cedar but this wine lives in the finish where it displays some firm tannins, some nice dryness, some acidity and a long finish. This is quite a nice Sangiovese but it is definitely a bigger one. I would give it an 88-89.

From the LCBO web site:
MAZZEI BADIOLA 2010 VINTAGES 662197 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 18.95
Made in: Tuscany, Italy By: Marchesi Mazzei S.R.L.
Release Date: Jul 20, 2013
13.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Medium-bodied & Fruity
Varietal: Sangiovese Blend Sugar Content: 4 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Tasting Note
Black cherry and currant flavors are accented by violet notes in this structured, muscular red. This shows density and grip, as the spice- and mineral-accented finish lingers. Best from 2014 through 2020. Score – 92. (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, Oct. 15, 2012)

2011 Peninsula Ridge Inox Chard

I love going down to Niagara, and love the restaurant at Peninsula Ridge. It’s an old farm house with some lovely elegant charm.

Bias up front, I’m rarely a fan of unoaked chards. I prefer oaked ones. And prefer them California in style, buttery and creamy.

Pale in color with a mild nose of pear and some minerality. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with minerality and pear coming through and living on in the medium length finish. There’s some mild acidity on the finish and some nice mouth grip living on nicely! Given this is a $13.75 bottle of wine this is a good deal. I would give it an 88-89. Nicely done!

From the winery’s web site:
2011 Unoaked Inox Chardonnay, VQA Niagara Peninsula, $13.75 / 750 ml Available general list at the LCBO # 594200.
Ripe pear and apricot/peach jam on the nose. Mouthfilling texture with ripe pear and a long mineral finish. – See more at: http://www.peninsularidge.com/our_wines.htm#sthash.PNLTevtv.dpuf

THE SHOW CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011

Bias up front, I love my California fruit forward cabs. Yum. This one is dark in color with a lovely nose of red ripe berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely red berries to match the nose. Cherries and even some dark berries. On the medium length finish the wine has some fine tannins, some mild dryness, and just a hint of acidity. This is a subtle well made, food friendly cab. Very nice. I would give it an 89 or so! Yumm. Well done.

From the LCBO web site:
THE SHOW CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011 VINTAGES 140715 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 17.95

13.9% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Full-bodied & Smooth Sugar Content: 7 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: D – Dry

Tasting Note
Notes of blackcurrant, vanilla and milk chocolate serve as a monumental opening act. The palate keeps the crowd engaged with its backdrop of vanilla and mocha supporting a lifted cherry fruit. Fire up the grill and put your guests front-row centre for this main attraction with some barbecued ribs or wings in a zesty sauce. (VINTAGES panel, May 2013)

VIÑA BERCEO CRIANZA 2008

Dark in color with a mild nose and some oak. On the mid pallet the wine displays some mild fruit, some chocolate, but this wine lives in the medium length finish where the wine displays some firm tannins, some lovely dryness and a bit of acidity. This is a lovely big tempranillo but softens with food. Quite good. I would give it an 89.

From the lcbo web site:
VIÑA BERCEO CRIANZA 2008 VINTAGES 672824 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 16.95

Tasting Note
The 2008 Vina Berceo Crianza has a rich, dark plum and boysenberry-scented bouquet with touches of spice and clove. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. It displays very good balance on the natural, refined, earthy finish, which demonstrates great persistency. This is a lovely Crianza to savor. Drink now-2017. Score – 90. DOMAINE DES DEUX VALLÉES SAVENNIÈRES 2010

Pale in color with slight sweet nose of honey, even honey suckle. On the mid pallet the wine is dominated by some grapefruit tartness, not over the top but definitely there. Really quite a surprise from the nose. On the medium length finish the wine especially on it’s on has lovely mouth grip with moderate acidity. With food this dials down nicely leaving a nice food friendly wine. This is more towards a nice sauv blanc than a chenin blanc. I would give it an 88-89, not a bad wine but not what I expected at all. A nice surprise. We paired it with a bacon quiche and it went well and held up well but not that perfect pairing.

From the LCBO web site:
DOMAINE DES DEUX VALLÉES SAVENNIÈRES 2010 VINTAGES 326868 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 19.95

14.0% Alcohol/Vol. Style: Aromatic & Flavourful
Varietal: Chenin Blanc Sugar Content: 5 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: D – Dry

Tasting Note
Lovely nose that offers quite pleasant indications of development. Tasty notes of pineapple, honey, apple, coconut, mineral, wet wool, and fresh mushroom. The palate too is showing nice development. Good acidity supports and drives the layered flavours through to the end of the lengthy finish. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2012)

2010 L de Lyeth Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with red berries, and some cherries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely velvety dryness along with some nice tannins. This is a lovely well made cab sauv, very food friendly. I would give it an 89! Yumm. Sadly not in the LCBO. I had it at Paradiso in Oakville.

From the winery’s web site:
Visual Aspect: Deep crimson in color
Nose: This is a complex wine with enticing aromas that are immediately evident as it pours from the bottle to the glass.
Palate: Deep crimson in color, the wine spreads across the palate with layers of cherry, blueberry and cocoa. The L de Lyeth Cabernet Sauvignon displays a nice tannin structure.
Food Pairing: Pairs excellently with grilled meats and hard cheeses such as Parmigiano and Romano.

Cline 2011 Pinot Noir

Garnet in color with a mild nose of light red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some light red berries to match the nose, strawberries and raspberries. There’s some sweetness there as well. This is definitely a more fruit forward pinot. On the medium length finish the wine displays some acidity, some tannins and some earthy notes. I would give it an 88 or so.

The tannins are ripe and satiny. Flavourful, warm finish. A nice match for barbecued chicken. (VINTAGES panel, May 2013)

2008 Blackjack Major’s line Shiraz

Inky dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice black berries. On the medium length finish the wine displays some tannins along with some pepper. This is definitely a kinder, gentler shiraz. I would give it an 88 or so. This would be a reasonably food friendly wine.

From the LCBO web site:
