2009 Henry of Pelham Baco Noir

Inky dark in color (you should have seen the cork!) with am earthy nose as well as some dark berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some dark berries and earth notes to match the nose. Maybe even some chocolate coming through. On the mid pallet the wine has some dry tannins and some mild acidity. I have to say this wine is better than I expected. I’ve previously had the wine and been a little underwhelmed. The reserve is so much more rich and complex. I would give it an 88-89!

Casa Dea 2010 Pinot Noir

I had the pleasure of attending the County in the City event at the Berkeley . A number of wineries from Prince Edward County came down to bring the fruits of their labour to our front door. I applaud those wineries that took the time to come and and spread the good word about the great wines coming out from the county. I last travelled to Prince Edward County in 2010 and was impressed with a number of the wines from there. One of the ones I was most impressed with was Casa Dea. Carmella Estates (Casa Dea’s previous name) had the distinction of being one of the longest Rieslings I had ever tasted. Paul Battilana the wine maker at Casa Dea came to the event and I enjoyed chatting with him about his passion and the great wines they are producing. I had a number of their wines at the event and I will post reviews of more of them in upcoming posts.

This wine was my hands down favourite of the night. And when you include the price I highly recommend it as a great bargain! Now Pinot Noir is one of those grapes that you either love or hate. This one is garnet in color with a nice rustic nose. On the mid pallet the wine has some lovely bold varietal pinot noir rustic flavours. This is not a fruity Pinot as some are. There’s lots to like here (if you like Pinots). On the long finish the wine has some nice dryness, minerality, and fine tannins that linger nicely in the mouth. I would pair it with some form of foul (chicken, turkey, Cornish hen) or red fish (salmon or trout) so that you can enjoy the lovely flavours of this wine. I would give it an 89. Paul thought it might keep for another couple years but personally I would be enjoying it now in all it’s glory! This one was so good I went back for more and ended my night with it!

Thanks Paul and your team for a great wine, please keep up the excellent work!

Description
This lovely PEC Pinot offers exceptional value for Pinot Noir.

Tasting Note
Here’s a light, tight, juicy and mineral example of County pinot in the style that excels in the region. The palate is light and flavour intensity modest, but this displays a good dose of limestone minerality and delicate freshness that should be allowed to characterize the wines of the area. For current consumption or short term hold. Tasted September 2011. Drink 2011-2013. Score – 88. (John Szabo, M.S., winealign.com, Sept. 2011)

EL HALCÓN OLD VINE TEMPRANILLO 2009

In the world of big wines Tempranillo’s can be big! Being an old vines I was excited. Dark in color with a subtle nose of black berries. On the mid pallet this wine is dominated by big alcohol (that passes with some breathing) and some black berries. On the long finish this is a big wine with huge firm tannins, some strong acidity and some strong peppery spicy notes. This wine needs some breathing. It’s a big wine but I am surprised at how subtle the fruit is. I’m not sure if this is too too young, needs more breathing or what. The fruit is completely overwhelmed. I would give it an 88 or so. I wouldn’t be running out to grab more.

EL HALCÓN OLD VINE TEMPRANILLO 2009 VINTAGES 313783 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 17.95
Made in: Ribera Del Duero, Spain By: Ole Imports
Release Date: Mar 16, 2013
Style: Full-bodied & Firm Wine, Red Wine 13.5% Alcohol/Vol.
Varietal: Tempranillo
Sugar Content: 5 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Tasting Note
The 2009 El Halcon is 100% Tempranillo sourced from 75-year-old head-pruned vines. The wine was aged for 8 months in 3-year-old French oak. Purple in color, it sports a fragrant nose of cedar, Asian spices, incense, lavender, and black fruits. Dense, rich, and round, it is a great value for drinking over the next 5-6 years. Score – 90. 2011 Megalomaniac Homegrown Red

I quote from Wikipedia “Megalomania is a psychopathological disorder characterized by delusional fantasies of power, relevance, or omnipotence. ‘Megalomania is characterized by an inflated sense of self-esteem and overestimation by persons of their powers and beliefs’. Can you tell the name of this winery get up my nose? Nuff said.

Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine displays some red berries a touch of tartness and some acidity. On the medium length finish there are some tannins, some dryness as well as some acidity coming through. I paired the wine with a filet mignon and the wine really did not hold up to the steak at all. I had to stop eating so I could focus on the wine to write this review. I would give it an 88-89. Not a bad wine, but sadly nothing outstanding either 🙁 But given the price it’s not a bad deal.

2010 13th St Cab/Merlot

Dark in color with a mild nose of red berries. On the mid pallet this wine is a deep rich cab, fruit forward with lovely dark cherries coming through. On the medium length finish the wine has some nice well balanced tannins and some nice dryness. It lives on nicely in the mouth with the rich dark cherries coming through without food but is not so strong as to overwhelm the food. I paired it with a Maltese baked rice (tomato based sauce). It went very well with the rustic flavors of the food. This wine is easily approachable now. This really is one of the better reds coming out of Niagara and when you factor in the price $21.95 this is not a bad deal at all. I applaud 13th St! I’ve been impressed with a number of their wines! I would give this a solid 89-90. Yumm. I bet it will keep pretty well too! Wish I’d bought more 🙁

From the winery’s website:
Tasting Notes

A nose of steeped black cherries, plums, sweet tobacco, bay leaf, earth and cedar with medium weight, balanced alcohol and fine mouth-coating tannins. This young wine will enjoy cellaring through 2018 or decant now for aeration and serve with roast duck, fine steaks, lamb stew or traditional moussaka, or firm aged sheep and cow’s milk cheeses.

2010 7 Deadly Zins Zinfandel

Dark in color with a lovely red berry nose, a little on the milder side and even some jammy notes coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some nice slightly jammy flavors, black berries, and some plums. The fruit comes out very nicely as it breaths. On the finish there’s some firm tannins, some acidity, some smokey notes, some oak and even some herbaceous notes coming through. This is a nice wine with a nice bit of complexity and nice dryness. It starts off fruit forward and then comes through in the end on the finish. The fruit flavors in the wine wine opened up as it breathed. This wine needs to either breath or age, it`s just too young to be appreciated in all it`s layers! I would give it an 89 or so. We paired it with a BBQ striploin steak and chocolate brownies and it went well, holding it`s own!

Collavini Proseco

Pale in color with a nice crisp minerally nose. On the mid pallet this is another smooth well made easy drinking Proseco. Nice crisp, dry flavors with some nice apple notes. The bubbles are nice and light. This is a food friendly wine and would pair nicely with lots of different foods. Seafoods, spicy foods etc, or go well on it’s own to sip. I would put it almost anywhere a Sauv blanc would go. The wine is medium in length on the finish with the crispness lingering nicely. I would give it an 88-89. For the money these prosecos just can not be beat! I’m not a bubbly guy but I must say I am enjoying exploring prosecos!

WILLY GISSELBRECHT TRADITION SYLVANER 2011 mini review

Another one from the Vinexx portfolio tasting. Pale in color with a nose similar to a Riesling with some honeysuckle coming through. On the mid pallet the wine has some slightly sweet flavors along with some nice crisp citrus flavors. The finish is medium in length along with some acidity. I would give this a 88-89, very food friendly. Given the price this wine is a very good deal.

2012 Kacba Susan’s Sauvignon Blanc

This is the first year for this wine at Kacaba. I had the opportunity to taste this out of the tank bank in the fall and it was showing very well. I pre bought 6 of them! Pale in color with nice citrus nose. ON the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely citrus notes along with some grassy flavors. The wine is medium in length building nicely. It’s a milder Sauv blanc and very food friendly. For a first year off the vines the wine is quite good. This bodes well for future releases. I have often wondered why there aren’t more Sauv Blancs in the bench! I would give it an 88-89. $17.95 a bottle at the winery!

GIACOMO MORI CHIANTI 2009

Dark in color with a nose of red dried fruits, some wood and some earthy notes. On the mid pallet are some dried red fruits to match the nose. On the finish the wine is backed by some firm acidity that fades reasonably quickly. This one is likely too young or needs to breath. The finish is medium in length with some nice tannins. I would give this a 89 or so. Not a bad chianti at all …

2008 Calamus Red

I’ve been to Calamus a number of times and never been disappointed. Derek and Pat have done a great job of setting up a winery that brings simple approachable wines at reasonable prices to the masses. I love what they have done with the old barn. It just seems consistent with the approach they take with the wine. Pat was behind the counter this time and as always the staff are great. Easy to talk to, not in the least pretentious, very down to earth! This wine is 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot. I was shocked, I would have sworn there was Pinot Noir in the blend. Dark and rusty in color. The nose has some oak, some red berries and again I would have said Pinot noir like. On the mid pallet the wine has rustic notes, some earthyness, some red berries, more towards strawberry. The wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with easy tannins and a bit of dryness. This is a simple, approachable wine. At $16.20 it’s reasonably priced and very food friendly!

From the Winery’s web site:
Tasting Notes: Colour Ruby
Aroma Cherry, blackberry, vanilla
Palate Ripe currant and blackberry with moderate tannins.
Food Pairing

SCOTT FAMILY ESTATE DIJON CLONE CHARDONNAY 2011

Slightly golden in color with a lovely varietal chard nose with vanilla and butterscotch coming through. On the mid palle the wine is slightly creamy, along with some beautiful vanilla, oak, and some apple flavors. The wine is medium in length on the finish with lots of layers, complexity and a hint of flint. This is a beautiful, California style chard. Not over baked just right. Be sure and be careful not to serve this too cool, or you will miss the complexity of this wine. I would give it a solid 90. Yumm. For the money this is a good deal!

From the LCBO web site:
SCOTT FAMILY ESTATE DIJON CLONE CHARDONNAY 2011 VINTAGES 99051 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 23.95

13.5% Alcohol/Vol. Sugar Content: 6 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: XD – Extra Dry

Description
Try with herb and goat cheese pizza with garlic: The combination of zesty orchard fruits and creamy vanilla notes in the wine provide nice counterpoints for the pizza’s zesty garlic and herbs, as well as the creamy cheese.

Tasting Note
The term ‘Dijon clone’ in the name here is a reference to the strain of Chardonnay used, which has its roots in Dijon, Burgundy. Lovely aromas of crisp apple, creamy vanilla and toasty oak are embroidered by hints of tropical fruit. Rich, full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and a dry, balanced finish. 2012 Kacaba Reserve Riesling and 2012 Kacaba Susan’s Sauvignon Blanc

Happy Easter to one and all from CWG and myself. For our family gathering quiche was on the menu so I selected two wines from our visit to Kacaba’s winery!

Bias up front I like my rieslings Dry, not sweet. This one is pale in color with a lovely lighter varietal riesling nose of dry honeysuckle, not too sweet on the nose. There’s a bit of bubbles on first pouring. On the mid pallet this is a smooth crisp dry Riesling with honeysuckle coming through but not at all too sweet. There’s a hint of effervescence on the tongue at first. The wine is medium in length with some lovely fruit coming through. This is a very food friendly wine. I would give it an 88-89. It available from the winery for !17.95 a bottle which IMHO is not a bad deal at all!

From the Winery’s web site:
RESERVE RIESLING 2012
MUCH MORE THAN A TYPICAL BENCH RIESLING! ALLURING NOTES OF RIPE MANGO, PEACH, YELLOW PLUM AND HONEYSUCKLE GIVE WAY TO A FRESH BALANCED ACIDITY AND A LONG FINISH BRIMMING WITH FLAVOUR. ENJOY ON ITS OWN OR WITH CHICKEN AND SEAFOOD DISHES.

Our second wine for the celebration was the Kacaba Susan’s Sauvignon Blanc. This it the first year for this wine at Kacaba. I tasted out of the barrel back in the fall and preordered a case of it. Very pale in color with a lovely varietal nose of citrus and grass. On the mid pallet the wine displays flavors spot on to the nose. Lovely citrus flavors along with some grass. This is lovely smooth well made sauv blanc. It’s amazing how good this is for the first year! The wine is medium in length in finish with smooth food friendly flavors. I would give it a good solid 89. $17.95 a bottle at the winery!

Both were awesome and paired very well with the quiche!

2011 Kacaba Barrel fermented Chardonnay

I’ve written up a number of Kacaba wine in the past. I love visiting their winery. The wines and the people are so approachable. Every year they are doing better and better with their wines. On this occasion Vadim Chelekhov the assistant wine maker was our host. He spent a lot of time with us sharing his passion for wine, his knowledge about the wine and about how he loves working at Kacaba. I really appreciate the time he spent with us there. If you haven’t made your way out to Kacaba yet, do!

This wine is pale in color with a lovely varietal chard nose with some oak and some vanilla coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some lovely vanilla to match the nose along with some pineapple. This wine is VERY sensitive to temperature. Serve it too cold and you will find it a bland wine with not a lot going on. Warm it up and it opens up nicely. I suspect it also maybe a bit too young. The wine has some butteryness to it and is backed by some acidity to match the pineapple on the mid pallet. I would give it an 88-89. Very nice, $22.95 a bottle at the winery.

From the Winery’s web site:
BARREL FERMENTED CHARDONNAY 2011
AROMAS OF PINEAPPLE, GUAVA AND PEAR MINGLE WITH HINTS OF VANILLA. THE PALATE IS FULL BODIED AND RICH WITH THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN FRUIT, OAK AND ACIDITY. THIS WINE IS A JOY TO DRINK WHEN YOUNG BUT WILL ALSO AGE AND DEVELOP BEAUTIFULLY FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

2010 Mount Eden Estate Pinot Noir

Those that know me know I don’t rave easily. Not in my nature. Recently Vinexx held their portfolio tasting event at Seasons , a restaurant in Oakville that I’ve been going to for a long time. George and Tammy have done a great job with this place. I haven’t been for a while and love what they’ve done with the place. The venue was perfect for the tasting. The food from the shrimp skewer to the salmon wrap, to the goat cheese pizza were all amazing. And what a great setting for tasting this wine. Rolf, Alex, Connie, Johanne and the rest of the team did an awesome job! This wine was by far my favorite of the night.

Garnet in color with a lovely varietal pinot nose with some lovely earthy, and rustic notes. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with lovely earthy, varietal pinot flavors along with some strawberry. The wine has a lovely smooth finish medium in length. It’s very food friendly. I would give it a solid 90+. It’s $60 a bottle available from Vinexx by the case, sadly not in the LCBO. A nice glass of yumm, if you like Pinots!

From the winery’s web site:
Martin Ray planted Pinot Noir at Mount Eden in 1945. The budwood came from Paul Masson’s original vineyard near Mount Eden. Because Masson was a good friend of the Louis Latour family of Burgundy, it is likely the selection came from one of Latour’s finest vineyards and was brought by Masson to California during the 1880s. The faith Ray demonstrated in this difficult red wine variety, at a time when America had little appreciation of fine wine, was remarkable. Today, Pinot Noir vines occupy seven acres of our estate vineyard and typically yield a meager one to one-and-a-half tons per acre.

Pinot Noir is the first variety harvested at Mount Eden, kicking off the vintage season. Using natural yeasts, fermentation is conducted in small open-top fermentors and extends ten to fourteen days, with the must punched down by hand. The new wine is immediately put into 75% new and 25% one-year-old French Burgundy barrels. It matures for eighteen months before being bottle unfined and unfiltered. Nothing is added; nothing is taken away.

Due to the soils in the vineyard, the Estate Pinot Noirs’ elegant, transparent style is more Burgundian than Californian, emphasizing wild strawberry, earth, blueberry and dill varietal characters. Cellaring the wine from five to twelve years pays handsome rewards.

PIERRE SPARR RÉSERVE PINOT GRIS 2011

Ok, I will admit up front, I’m not a bit Pinot Gris fan. I find them too bland. This one is slightly golden in color with a mild nose of peach. On the mid pallet the wine has some slightly sweet apricot, a little peach and some honeysuckle. On the medium length finish the wine has some acidity that sticks to the tongue a bit. I was impressed by this wine. It’s quite good for the money and a very good Pinot Gris. I would easily buy this one again. I would give it an 89 or so. We paired it with Shrimp/Scallop fettuccine Alfredo and I would have to say it did not go famously with the dish, but wasn’t awful either. Just not that perfect match made in heave. A crisper Sauv Blanc would have gone better IMHO. Given I don’t buy a lot of Pinot Gris I just didn’t get the pairing down right … sadly 🙁

From the LCBO web site:
PIERRE SPARR RÉSERVE PINOT GRIS 2011 VINTAGES 983395 | 750 mL bottle Price $ 14.95

13.5% Alcohol/Vol. Sugar Content: 15 g/L Sweetness Descriptor: M – Medium

Tasting Note
Lovely, layered, dynamic Pinot Gris with fresh white peach, apricot, honeysuckle, lemon meringe and grapefruit zest aromas. Ripe and flavourful, with the measured sweetness on the palate nicely offset by bright acidity. Culminates in a cleansing, tangy finish that shows a pleasant touch of citrus-peel bitterness. Very smooth texture throughout. Enjoy it with chicken and noodles in a light Thai peanut sauce, or pan-seared scallops in garlic and butter. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2012)

2011 Vineland Estates Elevation Chardonnay

Golden in color with a nose of apples. On the mid pallet the wine displays some green apple flavors to match the nose. It’s got some minerality and some tartness on the medium length finish. It’s an unoaked chard so what you are getting is the fruit itself. This isn’t the style of chard I prefer. I like California style buttery/creamy. I would give it an 88 or so. It’s $20 a bottle.

Megalomaniac winery visit and 2011 Reserve Riesling

I decided to checkout the Megalomaniac winery this time around, I’ve not been here before. To be honest, the name puts me off. “Mr Howard” as they refer to him in the store use to be a part owner at Vineland before he sold it off and then later opened this winery. As you drive up you encounter what could best be described as a bomb shelter like front to the tasting room and working winery. They are rebuilding the tasting room upstairs given they have outgrown the current setup. There’s lots of concrete, lots of stainless steel and in all it has a very industrial cold feel to it. For me, it’s not really to my tastes. None the less onto the wines. The wines are named equally eccentrically including Big Mouth Red Narcissist Riesling, Bravado Cab etc. I would have to say for me, this is an in your face experience that would have to create exceptional wines to make me overcome this approach.

2011 Reserve Riesling
Pale in color with a slight nose of apples. The wine is slightly effervescent on the front of the tongue but this passes quickly. The wine displays some nice minerality on the mid pallet and is a nice dry Riesling. The wine is medium in length on the finish with some tongue grip and some citrus coming through. I would give this an 88 or so. At $27.95 there are way better Rieslings out there for a whole lot less money. If I were you … I’d look elsewhere.

CLOS DE LOS SIETE 2009

I’ve had this one before and it can be a little inconsistent. Some years it’s fabulous, some years not so much. The 2002 was stellar. 2003 was not great. This year it is a blend of 57% Malbec, 15% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, 3% Petit Verdot. Not sure if the blend varies year to year or not. Dark in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet this is a deep rich wine with each of the grapes adding to the mix. The dominant flavor is one of black berries coming from the Malbec and the Syrah. On the finish the wine has some lovely velvety tannins along with some nice pepper and spicy notes. The wine is medium in length. The complexity on this wine is quite nice. I would give it a 90 or so. Yumm. This wine in the past has kept well, Jay Miller says 5-6 years. I have no problem believing that. I will go back and grab a few for the cellar. The price has come down. It was $24.95 in 2003. Extra bonus!

2011 Vineland Estates Pinot Meunier

Pinot Meunier is a chimeric mutation of Pinot Noir whatever that means. Darker in color than a pinot noir, but not as dark as say a cab sauv. The wine is almost cloudy. On the nose there’s a bit of sweet fruits, almost like dried fruits coming through. On the mid pallet the wine displays some red berries and some sweetness to match the nose. On the finish the wine has an almost vermouth like taste. It dials down a bit as it breaths. Again almost like dried fruits. Not as strong but similar to a port. The wine is one the lighter side of medium in length on the finish. Not a bad wine. I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with a maple glazed beef short rib. It didn’t go famously but did hold it’s own. Not a perfect pairing unfortunately. $17.95 a bottle at the winery.

2010 O’Leary Cab Merlot mini review

Another Mr. Wonderful wine (from Dragons Den). The wine is made for him by Vineland Estates. This is another of these celebrity wines. They put there name on a bottle made by someone else. No idea how much input Kevin actually has in the making of this wine. Lighter in color with a nose of red berries coming through. On the mid pallet the some has red berries to match the nose. The finish on the wine is on the lighter side of medium in length with some tannins, some acidity and earthy notes. It’s fairly smooth wine. The wine is largely unoaked according to the person behind the counter. I would give it an 88 or so. Not a bad wine. Mr Wonderful on Dragons Den is all about making MONEY. Well let’s hope he turns his passions to making even better wine! I won’t be rushing out to grab either of these wines 🙁

MIONETTO PROSECCO D.O.C. TREVISO

A while back a friend of mine Jason introduced me to Prosecco an Italian Sparkling wine. Later another friend Rosanne introduced me to a few new ones. She loves them. So I grabbed this one. There seems to be a number of Proseccos in the LCBO. It is considered to be a less expensive alternative to champagne. Personally I don’t drink a lot of bubbly. Mostly at New Years, but I thought I would pop this one because it was a special day today. It ended in Y and to top it off … it’s Monday, and they only come by once a week!

Pale in color with a lovely dry minerally nose. Reminds me a bit of a sauv blanc on the nose. On the mid pallet the wine has a nice bit of bubble effervescent but nothing too over the top. The flavors are minerality to match the nose, and some nice dry light citrus flavors. On the medium length finish the effervescence lingers a bit on the tongue as does the nice slightly tart, slightly acidic flavors. It’s surprisingly long in finish. The bubbles are just right for my tastes. I would give this one an 89. Very nice. There doesn’t seem to be a year anywhere on the bottle. I paired it with a pork tenderloin and it went very well. The minerality paired well with the meal and the light bubbles did not get in the way or make me feel full. Yumm …

2011 Southbrook connect red

I tasted this one at the iYellow Ice wine event and then bought a bottle for a more in depth tasting. Dark in color with nice nose of red berries, even a little dried fruits coming through. Quite nice. On the mid pallet the wine has lovely red berries and again dried fruits to match the nose, with a touch of sweetness. On the finish the wine has some nice dryness, some nice tannins, some earthy notes and some acidity. The alcohol is noticeable so I would suggest a bit of breathing. I would give it an 88. Not a bad wine for the price.

2010 Wolf Blass Yellow label Shiraz

Inky dark in color with a nose of blueberry and some sweetness. On the mid pallet the wine displays fruity blueberries to match the nose. Straight out of the bottle it displays some acidity but this passes quickly. The wine is one the lighter side of medium in length on the finish with some mild tannins and soft pepper. We paired it with spaghetti and meat balls and when it was enjoyed with food the tannins and pepper were almost unnoticeable. This is definitely a softer gentler shiraz. I would give it an 88 or so.
