Toronto Wine and Spirits event

I attended the Toronto Wine and Spirit event last night. They are holding it at Sugar Beach at the corner of Jarvis and Queens Quay. It’s $30 to get in (which includes 5 tasting tickets) and then you pay for tasting tickets for $1 a piece. Tastings are 2-3 tickets for at least an ounce. They were serving a number of different wines, vodka, whiskey, and beer. You can see the list of all participating vendors on the web site. There’s also some food at the event. All in all this is a reasonably priced event at a great location right on the water. It’s not the biggest event and there isn’t a ton of wine, but still worth a trip. It’s on tonight and tomorrow as well. If you get a chance stop by! Toronto Wine and Spirits Event

2006 Kendal Jackson Chardonnay

Back in 2008 I decided to try a little experiment. I put away a couple California style chards to test aging. I got the idea from a Global Wine Tour’s tasting event where they featured an aged Chard. Something I would not have thought of trying. So in the spirit of a wine is ready to drink when you can’t wait any longer 🙂 I decided it was time to give this a whirl. Over 3 years in the making. The wine was stored in a white wine fridge meaning it was colder. Golden in color with a mild but subtle varietal chard nose. On the mid pallet the wine displays classic California style chard flavors. Slightly buttery, slightly creamy some vanilla and a hint of butter scotch. The wine is medium in length on the finish building nicely. There a hint of syrup like texture and flavor. If I was to compare this to the unaged the color has darkened and the wine has become smoother, but the fruit flavors have subsided. I would give the wine a solid 90-91. I would say it has improved. I think I kept it a little too long but that was the experiment. Have a cellar you need help with? Want to start one? Planning a party and not sure what wine to serve? C.H. BERRES ÜRZIGER WÜRZGARTEN RIESLING KABINETT 2008

Trying a new wine is exciting. Having no idea what to expect … I approached this wine that way. A 90 rated Riesling Kabinett caught my eye. I prefer my Riesling dry (rather than sweet), and Kabinetts are usually that. Pale in color with a nose of some minerality and some traditional Riesling bouquet. On the mid pallet the wine displays a sweeter Riesling. Some apricots coming through. There is a hint of effervescent (think bubbles) on the tongue at first but it fades VERY quickly. The wine is one the lighter side of medium in length on the finish. There is a slightly syrupy texture to the wine. This isn’t an aweful Riesling by any means. I would put it smack in the middle of a Kabinett and a Spatlese. I paired it with a pan fried Sea Bass and it went surprisingly well. I enjoyed the pairing. I would give it an 88 or so, only because it’s not as dry as I had hoped for. The alcohol on this one is uber low at 9%. The LCBO rate it as Medium sweetness which I would agree with! The rater estimated this would keep until 2020. Rieslings can be VERY ageable wines! A while back a bought a bunch of well aged Rieslings. Was an interesting experience!

Tasting Note
This white offers breadth and depth, with nectarine and apple flavors underscored by a citrus component. The wine’s richness matches with the vibrant acidity, leaving a long, fruity aftertaste. Drink now through 2020. Score – 90. (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, July 31, 2010)

Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc 2009

We stopped by Spice Route, one of my favorite restaurants, and had this one for dinner. It’s pale in color with a lovely nice nose of green grass. On the mid pallet this is lovely grassy sauv blanc. The finish is medium in length with nice mouth feel and some acidity. It is very food friendly. I would give it an 88-89. We paired it with Cantonese Chow Mein. Very nice! Unfortunately not in the LCBO. Available for $11.95 a bottle from Tradesa.

2011 Trius Sauv Blanc

As regular readers of my posts know I am a lover of Sauv Blancs. Good ones are tremendously food friendly, versatile wines. If a white is called for more often than not I reach for a Sauv Blanc! The 2008 Peninsula Ridge Sauv Blanc I reviewed was excellent so as I was walking out of the grocery store I decided to give this one a whirl. Pale in color with a nose of green grass. I find Sauv Blancs tend to lean either citrus or grassy. On the mid pallet this wine is all about green grassy, but not over the top as some are. The wine is medium in length with a nice bit of acidity, but again not too much. Thing white grapefruit. The wine builds very nicely in the mouth. I would give this an 89 or so. A lovely example of a Sauv Blanc. And then I asked the price and was shocked to hear it’s featured at the LCBO right now for $12.95, regularly 13.95. Wow. What more can one ask for. VERY well done Trius. I’ve regularly been impressed with Trius!

2009 St Francis Chardonnay

We had this one as the reception wine at the Society for American Wines George Restaurant tasting! Golden in color with a lovely rich chard nose. Some nice butterscotch. On the mid pallet this wine has lovely varietal California style all over it. Lovely butterscotch and vanilla. On the finish the wine has absolutely no bitterness. The Oak is well under control and the finish is medium in length and builds nicely in the mouth. This is a lovely chard for the price. I would give it a solid 90 and right up my alley. Yumm!

2004 Irony Cab sauv

I’ve had this one in my cellar since 2008 and my records showed it was time to give it a try. One of the things that is important to having is cellar is record keeping. What a shame it would be to miss a wine’s peak or even worse open it to find it well past it’s prime. If your looking for help with your cellar I am offering wine consulting services to help setup cellars or manage existing ones. I can also help with party planning. Want more info?

Dark in color with a deep rich cherry nose. On the mid pallet this wine displays the same deep rich cherry and cassis that came through on the nose. On the finish this wine still has some firm tannins and bright acidity. This wine has kept very well. Some brief breathing eased the sharpness on the finish. The finish is medium in length. This is a meaty cab. I would give this a solid 89. We paired it with steak and it held up well and I used the wine as marinade for the steak.

2010 LEIRA ALBARIÑO

A friend of mine who loves Spanish wine Manuel suggested I try this one. Coincidentally he is Spanish. Huh. I’ve never had an Albariño before so had no idea what to expect. Manuel tells me he’s had this one before and it’s a good one. Pale in color with a light nose with some minerality coming through. On the mid pallet this wine is like a mild Sauv blanc. Some citrus, some lemon, some minerality to match the nose. On the finish this wine lingers nicely in the mouth. With some nice acidity on the finish. It’s on the lighter side of medium in length. This would be a perfect summer sipper for the patio! The parallels for me are smack on a mild Sauv blanc. It’s well made, food friendly and refreshing. I would give it an 88 or so. We paired it with a BBQ pork spinach sausage and it held up OK but I would not say it was a match made in heaven. I also paired it with a tandoori chicken. It held up OK to that as well but again, for me not the perfect match. I wouldn’t be running out to grab a case, but wouldn’t be in a rush to return it either 🙂

Fine Albariño with a good dose of minerality on the nose, plus strong suggestions of spice, pear, lime, nettles, straw and herbs. The palate follows suite quite nicely, delivering consistent replays along with a crisp and refreshing acidity and a very long finish for this style. (VINTAGES panel, July 2011)

2010 Cline Pinot Noir mini review

Another one from the California wine show. Garnet in color with a lovely rustic, varietal pinot nose. On the mid pallet this wine is a spot on Pinot with strawberries coming through. On the finish the wine is well balanced with light tannins. I would give it an 88-89. At $18.95 it’s a pretty good deal. Unfortunately not in the LCBO right now but available from Vinex by the case.

2010 KENDALL-JACKSON VINTNER’S RESERVE CHARDONNAY

I tasted this one at the California wine show. This is a wine I’ve enjoyed for a while. Golden in color, with a lovely rich nose of butterscotch. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose with a smooth easy California style chard with some butterscotch. On the finish the wine has some strong tartness and acidity. I think it might be a little young and little too cold. As it was I would give it an 88.

From the LCBO web site for a different year:

Wine, White Wine 13.5% Alcohol/Vol.

Sugar Content : XD

Made in: California, USA By: Jackson Wine Estates International
Release Date: Oct 1, 2011

Tasting Note
There are several million cases of the 2009 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay (100% estate grown Chardonnay that is, remarkably, 100% barrel fermented), which comes primarily from Jess Jackson’s coastal properties in Monterey and Santa Barbara. Winemaker Randy Ullom told me he manages to stir the lees on all the barrels once a month, which is astonishing. Abundant aromas of white peach, honeysuckle, green apple skins and a hint of tropical fruits jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, crisp, dry, fruity, well-made Chardonnay. It is a sensational bargain. Kendall-Jackson enjoys a well-deserved reputation for over-delivering quality vis a vis price for its wines. , , Score – 89. Two Euro Bordeaux Wine

Think long and hard about what $2.60 can buy you. Once you have that vivid image in your hand, take a sip of the glass of wine you have by your side. Bet that glass by itself is worth more than two euros. If you are Canadian and reading this, I can guarantee you your bottle of wine is in the nine or more dollar range.

So how is it, in the land of $700 bottles of Haut-Brion or Cheval Blanc, you can find a bottle (or ten) of wine that is cheaper than a single glass in a Country like Canada?

Tough question for sure. Most will point to the taxman; some may point at the producers; while the poor consumer may even have a finger or two waggled in their direction. Fact is all three are to blame.

Let’s look at the 6 million people living within 90 minutes of the Niagara wine region, in what is known as the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). These folks are hard pressed to find a VQA Niagara red for under $12. When they do you can argue there is little point in buying it. But why is that? Niagara reds of any quality will start at $12 and then climb steeply. Part of that is the government taking their fair chunk either through direct taxes or via the LCBO’s shameless monopoly. The next reason are the wine producers themselves, who know well enough how far to push the bottom line. And this of course leads to the average GTA consumer who turns their collective noses up at the low cost Canadian wines.

Why do I say all this and ponder such a silly question? Day 2 in Bordeaux has seen me gasping for air at the prices we pay for bottles priced 1/3rd to 1/4rd their asking back home. We simply are gouged back home and coming here reminds you so much that you are.

See a local shelf and try not to feel violated.

A Week in Bordeaux

This post is coming from a quaint little restaurant at the base of the church in St-Emilion. The weather is a stunning cloudless 27c and for mid-May one cannot ask for more. This is the first of a few posts for 2012 Bordeaux Wine Week.

Today we will be stopping at a few Chateaux in the St-Emilion region. Emilion is my favorite region in Bordeaux and is also the only region to have it’s very own classification system, separate from the Bordeaux system. Of note as well is the entire jurisdiction has a UNESCO world heritage designation.

We are just finishing off a demi of 2006 Chateau Haut-Segotes, a Grand Cru. Bold tannins and deep fruit indicate that this wine is still a tad young, but is was overall excellent.

Good day so far, more to come!

A romantic weekend get away to Niagara wine region

Living in the GTA we are close to two wine regions, Niagara and Prince Edward County. I’ve already written up my visits to Prince Edward County , this time Niagara. I’ve been down to Niagara a number of times for a weekend get away and always enjoy myself. I’ve also written up a visit to Niagara on the Lake.

As always start with with planning. Wine Country Ontario has some great maps, and links to wineries. It’s a great place to start.

If you haven’t been before, going to an Ontario tasting event like Sip and Savour can give you an entry into exploring Niagara wines and help you to know which wineries make wines you like. If not, then you can always use some other means, reviews, research or do what a woman would do … choose based on the label or the name 🙂 Now that I’ve offended half of my readers, we will move on …

There are what seems like a constant stream of new wineries in Niagara. So a regular trip down can be an opportunity to explore the latest and greatest because often they aren’t in the LCBO! Especially the smaller ones. More and more, places that use to simply grow the grapes are starting to make their own wines. So this can mean a new winery has very old vines!

The number one challenge in a trip like this is monitor what your drinking if your driving! Pace yourself. There is not a chance you can taste every wine at a winery or you will only be going to one. If you are travelling with others split it up so you can each taste a bit of the same wine allowing you to try more. Of course you could always spit, but to me that is virtually sacrilege 🙂

What I have done on a number of occasions is drive down to Niagara to the Escarpment area and hit a winery for a later lunch. There are a number of wineries with terrific restaurants in them:

  • Peninsula Ridge has a nice restaraunt inside a lovely converted old home. Their tasting room is quite nicely done. There wines are getting better and better each year and the food is quite good. There 2009 Sauv blanc is yummy! Heres a list of wines I’ve reviewed at Peninsula Ridge.
  • Ridgepoint has a terrific Italian country style kitchen. The ambiance of the restaurant is easily compensated by terrific staff, good food, and good wine, all at reasonable prices. The wines tend to be influenced by the Italian heritage of the owners. They also have a lovely patio over looking the vineyard! You can read about my last visit to Ridgepoint here. And here is a list of the reviews of Ridgepoint wines I’ve done.
  • East Dell have a lovely restaurant overlooking the vineyard. The ambiance is lovely and they have some good wines at good prices. Here is a write up of my last visit to East Dell.
  • Vineland Estates has hands down the nicest of the restaurants I’ve been to in the wine region. Not that there aren’t others. The ambiance is lovely, food good (albeit a little more expensive), great view of the vineyard and a positively dizzying array of wines to try. Here are the Vineland Estates wines I’ve reviewed in the past.

This is not an exhaustive list, just the ones I have been to!

Now that lunch is done you can head to a number of wineries on the way to your Inn for the night. There are lots to choose from in the escarpment or head over to Niagara on the Lake wineries.

My favorite place to stay is right in downtown Jordan. They have two Inns, Inn on the Twenty and Jordan house. They are a quick 5 minute walk from each other. Inn on the Twenty is more up scale. Jordan House a little less expensive. They are owned by the same people. Be sure and book dinner at the restaurant at Inn on the Twenty when you check in. It is a fabulous place with a lovely view, great food, and terrific ambiance.

Now your car is parked and you can head over to Cave Springs for a tasting. They sometimes have tours of the cellar and even some instructional sessions. Ask at the counter.

Now your ready to settle in and relax for a bit before dinner. Enjoy the room, and unwind.

Dinner over at Inn on the Twenty …

Lastly you can walk over to the Jordan House which has a good pub that includes live music, and a dance floor. Get your groove on!

In the morning back over to Inn on the Twenty restaurant for breakfast. Then head out and hit a few wineries on your way out! Or visit the Niagara Butterfly conservatory or go see Niagara Falls itself. There’s also the Casino in Niagara Falls and so much more to do!

At the end of your two day stay you will have visited 8-10 wineries, had some incredible food. Relaxed, taken it easy and had yourself a wonderful recharging weekend get away, close to the city!

2008 Peninsula Ridge Sauvignon Blanc

I previously reviewed the 2009 which I got at the winery and was impressed. The 2008 is in the LCBO. Pale in color with a mild citrusy nose. On the mid pallet this wine is dominated by strong tartness and grapefruit flavors. Not quite sharp but very dominant. On the finish the wine has a lingering acidity that goes on for a bit. I would give it an 88 or so. Not as deep or rich as the 2009. More edgy and unrefined.

2005 Cave Spring Estate Bottle Cab Franc

Back in 2008 I picked this one up at the winery. For me Cab Franc is a signature grape for Niagara. It is one of the things they do VERY well. And 2005 was a superb year for Niagara reds. When young they can be big tannic monsters. Pallet singeing. For these big ones don’t even think of approaching them for at least 5 years. They will age well due to the big tannins. With this in mind I have been patiently waiting to open this one. You know when a wine is ready to be drunk? When you just can’t wait any longer. And that was the case. Lamb was on the menu and this one just fit the bill! Dark in color with some slight browning around the edges (common with aging). On the nose the wine has some light bouquet of red berries. On the mid pallet this has become a lovely smooth well balanced cab fran. The fruity tastes have subsided, a sign I may have waited a little too long. On the finish this wine has become a smooth elegant wine with some lovely firm tannins, and some lovely dryness on a medium to long finish. This wine paired extremely well and held up to BBQ rack of lamb. I even used the wine to marinate the lamb in to further heighten the pairing. I would give this a 91. I originally paid $23.84. It currently goes for $29.95 in the LCBO for the 2007.

Another one from the California wine show. Dark in color with a nose of dark berries. On the mid pallet this is a fruit forward slightly sweet wine. It’s on the lighter side of medium in finish. Borgogno 2000 Barolo Riserva

Trialto recently held a Borgogno Barolo tasting at the fine wine reserve!

Dark in color with a mild nose of dried fruits. On the mid pallet this is a smooth wine with dried fruits coming through. There’s some nice dryness and some pucker power. It is well integrated with fine tannins on the medium finish. I would give it an 88-89. Available by the half case for $115 a bottle from Trialto, not in the LCBO.

SUR DE LOS ANDES RESERVA MALBEC 2007

Dark in color. With a nose of red berries. On the mid pallet the wine has a strong red berries taste, not fruity but definitely noticeable. On the finish the wine has strong firm tannins and bright acidity. This is a bit of a harsh wine even for a Malbec. Oak is present and noticeable. It has a medium finish. I would give it an 88 or so. Based on the rating from Parker below I was quite interested in this wine. I would say it did not live up to the hype.

CERRO AÑON RESERVA 2005

Another wine from the LCBOs Spanish release. Dark in color. On the nose the wine displays some wood and dark berries. On the mid pallet this wine is got some sweet fruity flavors reminiscent of a port. Some dried prunes. On the finish the wine is dominated by oak dark berries again some port like flavors backed by some strong acidity and firm tannins that build in the mouth. There’s some nice dryness as well. This is a slightly bitter wine. I like tempranillos but this is not a great one. I would give it maybe and 88 or so. A far cry 91 Jay Miller gave it. Guess our taste buds are VERY different. This is another one I will be taking back.

Tasting Note
The 2005 Cerro Anon Reserva is a similar blend to the Crianza but aged in barrel for 20 months. Sandalwood, Asian spices, incense, mineral, and espresso notes inform the nose of this savory, mouth-filling, dense, succulent offering. Give it 2-3 years of additional cellaring to fully blossom and drink it through 2020, if not longer. It is a remarkable value in traditional Rioja … Bodegas Olarra was founded in 1973 and is located in the heart of the Denominacion de Origen Calificada Rioja on the outskirts of Logrono. Score – 91. 2009 Peninsula Ridge Sauvignon Blanc

I’m a lover of Sauv blancs. I quite enjoy the citrus, boystrous style of Sauv Blancs. They make fabulous food friendly wines. This wine is very pale in color with a mild citrus nose. On the mid pallet this is a lovely smooth citrusy wine with lots of layers on a medium finish. It builds nicely in the mouth. This one can give New Zealand Sauv blancs a run for the money and for me this is one of the best Sauv blancs coming out of Niagara. And it’s reasonably priced! I would give this a 90 with extra bonus point for price! Check it out!

Tasting Note
The pair from Landmark are both exceptional wines and, if one feels the need to choose between them, it is a choice within the world of small differences. Those who favor this wine will do so for its slightly greater restraint, slightly tighter structure and its seeming willingness to age very well for the next half decade. Its suppleness is given with less ease than its mate, but its balance is impeccable and time is on its side. Score – 92. (Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wines, June 2010)
