2008 Arboleda Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine is dark in color with lots of black berries and some oak coming through on the nose. On the mid pallet this wine is dominated by classic cab sauv flavors, deep rich cherries, some oak and big and bold in the mouth. The wine is long in finish with some nice dry tannins, some bold pallet coating flavors lingering nicely in the mouth with some nice dry pucker power! The oak is there and noticeable but not out of control. This is shall I say it again … a big wine. Pair this up with hearty rich meats or you won’t taste much of anything but the wine. This is a well made cab. I would consider it one of the best Chilean cab sauv’s I’ve had in a while. I’d give it a 90-91. Given the price I’d run out and grab some. The strong tannins would indicate this ought to keep for a little while too.

2006 Ballast Stone Merlot

I’ve had this one in the collection for a while now. Dark in color, starting to discolor slightly around the edges of the wine. Showing it’s age a bit. On the nose are lovely varietal plums coming through. On the mid pallet this is a fruit forward, California style Merlot with plums in spades, some chocolate/mocha and a hint of tannins. The finish is on the lighter side of medium with a little bit of pepper coming through. The flavors fall off quickly in the mouth. This is a VERY food friendly wine and it has held it’s own well. I’m not sure if it would keep a whole lot longer. For the price this was a good wine. I would give it a solid 90!

From the LCBO web site:
BALLAST STONE MERLOT 2006 Currency Creek South Australia Ballast Stone is not a name chosen lightly. In the 1800s ships used ballast stones to keep them seaworthy. When they arrived in Australia the stones were off-loaded to make room for goods such as grain and wool. The Ballast Stone winery buildings were constructed with the stones left behind. Filled with plum blueberry and cherry aromas this dry flavourful full-bodied and ripe wine is an excellent choice for your cottage barbecue. 127555 $16.95

2009 Beringers Founders Estate Chardonnay

The wine is pale in color with a mild nose. On the mid pallet this wine is a smack on varietal California style chard. Some lovely vanilla, some caramel, some nice apple, and some oak coming through. On the medium length finish the wine is very well done with the taste lingering nicely. This is a very food friendly middle of the road chard. Not too buttery, not too creamy, just right for enjoying with food. We paired it with pan seared Ahi tuna with a peppercorn crust and it went ok. I think a Dry Riesling or a Sauv Blanc would have gone better. This is the first time we have done Ahi tuna so I went to Natalie’s food and wine pairing for guidance. I would give this wine a solid 90 and would buy it again. Yumm …

Bright gold colour; spicy, toasty vanilla and tropical notes on the nose; full-bodied on the palate with forward apple citrus fruit and vanilla notes; well-balanced with a long finish.

2009 Terenzuola Vermintino

This is another of those unique white grapes of Italy I don’t know well. So I had no idea what to expect. This is always an interesting experience. The wine is pale in color with citrus hints coming on the nose. Reminded me a bit of a sauv blanc albeit a milder one. On the mid pallet the wine’s flavors match the nose … Citrus comes through with minerality shining through on the lighter side of medium finish. There’s some slightly tart flavors coming through as well. Sugar is well under control as are oak and alcohol. This wine is very food friendly, well made and elegant. Not an overly robust wine but good none the less. I’d give it an 89. Very pleasant.

From the LCBO Web site:

Tasting Note
The Colli di Luni is a tiny appellation whose vineyards almost literally cling to the sides of the cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Vermentino grape probably has its origins in Italy, and is still grown primarily there today. This wine has a lovely floral nose, with hints of linden flowers. Vibrant citrus, peach and lime on the palate, with continuing floral notes, combined with a nice minerality. Enjoy this robust white alongside roast pork with quinces, or a flavourful tapenade. 2008 La Posta Malbec

Deep inky in color with a nose of blueberries. On the mid pallet the wine matches the nose well with blueberry jam coming through with some sweetness but nothing too extreme. On the medium finish the wine has some firm tannins a slight bit of bitterness. Lots of dry pucker power builds on the finish as it coats the pallet. This is a well made smooth Malbec with a bit of attitude to boot. I would give it a solid 89-90. Very nice wine.

Tasting Note
Ripe and polished, with lush layers of raspberry, blueberry and fig fruit that glide over alluring spice notes, with well-integrated grip. MARCHESE ANTINORI CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 2006

This wine is dark in color with lots of dark berries and cherry coming through on the nose. On the mid pallet the wine is deep and rich with lovely complex fruit. Description
This wine is basically a selection of the very best Sangiovese grapes from Antinori’s Chianti Classico vineyards (excluding those used for their top-end Badia a Passignano). Look for raspberry, plum, strawberry, dried meat and new leather aromas and flavours. This dry and fresh, youthful wine will still benefit from cellar time (3-5 years), but if you decant it (2 hours) you can enjoy it tonight with game meats, bison steaks or grilled lamb.

Dona Paula Estate Malbec 2006

I last reviewed this wine back in June of 2009. I had a few still in the cellar. The wine is dark in color with lots of dark cherries and some sweet fruit coming through on the nose. On the mid pallet the wine is deep rich and smooth. Lovely cherries and some prunes coming through. It has continued to improve in the bottle. The wine is medium in length. I would give this a solid 90. For the money this is a bargain.

2009 Inniskillin Winemaker’s series Three Vineyards Chardonnay

I last wrote up the 2007 release of this wine. They have been consistently making this wine year after year. The wine is golden in color with a nice varietal chard nose. On the mid pallet are some lovely green apple, and some caramel flavors. This is a spot on varietal chard albeit milder. Slightly creamy, slightly buttery. The wine is medium in finish and the tartness builds nicely in the mouth. We enjoyed it with a pan fried cod and it went VERY well. I would give this one an 89-90. Very nice, especially for the money. Yum.

2008 J.P. Chenet Pinot Noir

I had this one at the iYellow Pinot event. This one has a fancy bottle … woohoo, and it’s from France, must be good no? 🙂 Ruby in color with an earthy funky nose not uncommon with Pinot Noirs. On the mid pallet this is a mild varietal pinot noir with some rustic flavors. The wine is on the lighter side of medium. This would be a very food friendly wine but for me there is not a lot going on. Now for the price this is not a bad deal. I would give it an 88 or so.

DARTING RIESLING KABINETT 2004

German wines get a bad rap (sometimes). There are times there Rieslings can best be called sugary water. There labeling is confusing, names are hard to pronounce or remember. That said Germany (and Alsace) are the Grandfather of Riesling. If you’d like to read a bit about German wines you can check my Summary from Karen McNeil’s wine bible and go to the section on Germany. Kabinetts are the most dry (least sweet) or at least they are suppose to be. This one is quite golden in color with an odd nose. There are times there was next to nothing wafting up and other times there was some sulfur, some petrol and some sugary smells. This isn’t boding well. On the mid pallet this wine is dominated by sugar. Candied fruits come through in spades. The finish is on the lighter side of medium. If there is any savior in this wine it’s that the sugar fades quickly in the mouth. This is definitely a sweet wine. It is even a little syrupy in texture. It so sweet it’s sticky to touch. Very much not to my tastes. I’m amazed they consider this to be a Kabinett. For me this is much more of a Spatlese, maybe even an Auslese. I would give it an 86 or so. Parker apparently gave it an 87. If I had more, I’d take it back.

NUGAN ESTATE MCLAREN PARISH VINEYARD SHIRAZ 2006

This wine is deep in color with a mild nose of cherries. On the mid pallet are some lovely deep and rich classic shiraz with cherries and dark berries coming through in spade in layer after layer. On the finish the wine is long in length with classic Aussie pepper on the finish. It coats the pallet beautifully in velvety tannins and a nice bit of dry pucker power. This is a solid well made big Aussie Shiraz. Spot on varietal. I would give it a 91. Yummy. We paired it with a lamb shank and I even marinated the lamb in it. Mouth wateriingly delicious! I’ve had this one in the cellar for almost 3 years and it is aging well!

2008 Gretzky Sauv Blanc

I stopped by Gretzkys for the first time. Celebrity wines put me off. All Gretzky wines are made by Creekside. The wines are dedicated to supporting the Wayne Gretzky foundation with all profits going there. A charity that brings hockey to underprivileged kids. The Sauv blanc is pale in color with a nose of citrus, mostly lemon. On the mid pallet the wine matches the bouquet with citrus flavors and some grassyness coming through. The wine is medium length in finish dominated by tart grapefruit flavors. Not a bad Sauv blanc. The person working the tasting booth said the grapefruit flavors were even more dominant when it was first bottled. I would give it an 88. $15.95

Notes from the winery’s web site:
Given extended aging time (averaging 15 months) in French oak barrels, the region’s hallmark seam of lively acidity has been maintained while adding the rounded mouthfeel and structural depth associated with fermentation and aging in neutral oak. Crisp, focused, and complex, the 2008 Estate Series offering showcases the breadth of potential for Sauvignon Blanc on the Niagara Peninsula. Enjoyable now, this wine should evolve further in bottle with 2-3 years of cellaring.

LAMMERSHOEK BARRIQUE CHENIN BLANC 2007

Back in June 2009 I last reviewed this wine. I discovered one left over in my cellar. Ooops. I wouldn’t consider this an aging wine. I quite enjoyed it back then so I was interested to see how it has evolved. Pale in color with some semi sweet honey coming through on the nose. It had some resemblance to a sweeter Riesling on the nose. On the mid pallet are some definitely noticeable sugar, and the wine has gone slightly syrupy in texture. On the finish the wine is medium in length and the alcohol is quite noticeable. There are some caramel, baked apple like flavors on the finish. It reminded me a little of a chard on the finish. Breathing helped the alcohol to become less dominant and warming up also helped soften it. The 2 years this has been sitting have not helped this wine. I didn’t intend to keep it this long. I would give it an 88 or so. Not entirely unenjoyable but not great either.

2010 Vineland Estates Pinot Grigio

I had this one at the iYellow Pinot event. This wine is VERY pale in color mild on the nose with nothing distinctive coming through for me. On the mid pallet this is a VERY subtle wine with a hint of some citrus coming through. On the finish this wine is on the lighter side of medium. If your looking for a light easy drinking sipper for the patio for folks that don’t like wine this would be a good choice. This is somewhat varietal for a pinot grigio so I think they have actually done a reasonable job of it, it’s just not to my tastes. I like a deeper wine for my $$s. I would give it an 87-88.

2004 Scharzhofberger Egon Muller Kabinett Riesling

Pale in color mild on the nose. On the mid pallet this wine is a nice dry, well made, smooth Kabinett Riesling. Tastes of light citrus notes, and some minerality come through nicely. There is a slight bit of sweetness typical of a Riesling but well under control. The finish is on the lighter side of medium. This is a well made food friendly wine. But for the price I have to say I’d put my money elsewhere. I would give it an 88.

2007 Mike Weir Pinot Noir

I had this one at the iYellow Pinot event. You could insert my usual diatribe about celebrity named wines or we can just move onto the review 🙂 Quite dark in color (much darker than a typical pinot) with a nose of lots of black berries and some oak. On the mid pallet this wine is dominated by what I often refer to as the Niagara terroir. For me it’s like dirt in a glass. Pinots are often earthy but this one is earthy not in a good way. On the finish the wine is dominated by strong tannins typical of some Niagara reds. For my tastes this is a poorly made wine. It would not be particularly food friendly but would hold up to big hearty meals like a steak. I would give it an 87 and for my money I would buy much better wines.

Elegant Pinot Noir featuring aromas of strawberry, sour cherry, earth tones and a touch of wild raspberry. Dry, with focused acidity and harmonious fruit flavours. Medium bodied with a good finish. BODEGAS LAN CRIANZA 2006

Crianza is 100% Tempranillo. I like Tempranillo’s they can be big bold distinctive wines. This one is dark in color with earthy notes and some oak on the nose. On the mid pallet the wine is dominated by oak with the dark fruits completely overwhelmed. On the finish the wine has a pallet coating finish that is quite strong. This is not a particularly food friendly wine or much of a sipper either. Oak is out of proportion for my tastes. This is a poorly made wine. I would give it an 86. Malivoire 2010 Pinot Gris

I had this one at the iYellow Pinot event. This wine is pale in color and on the nose there was a distinctive smell that passed quickly that I could not place. On the mid pallet the wine is surprisingly fresh, some lemon, lime with some nice minerality on the finish (almost slightly tart) that builds nicely in mouth. I would say it was on the lighter side of medium in finish. Not a bad wine at all and quite food friendly. I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I would give it an 88-89. $19.95 at the winery (not available at the LCBO). Now for the price this doesn’t hold the value equation for me, there are much better wines for less money.

From the winery web site:
Winemaker’s Notes
Our Pinot Gris was hand-harvested on the 1st, 2nd and 15th of September at an average of 21.2° brix, titratable acidity of 7.1 g/l and a pH of 3.3. After hand sorting, the fruit was destemmed and then left on the skins for an average of 3 hours. Gently pressed to 1.1 atmospheres, settled, then fermented cool in stainless steel. Aged in stainless steel to preserve fruit and crispness. The finished wine at 13% alcohol and 9 g/l of residual sugar, was bottled on January 25, 2011. Drink now through 2013.

Food Pairings
Served slightly chilled, this Pinot Gris is an excellent aperitif. Enjoy on its own or with oka style cheese. A superb match for braised veal, pan-fried pickerel, or mussels. For a vegetarian match, try with a white pizza or cheese ravio

2009 Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay

I’ve written this one up before and they continue to be consistent with it. It is golden in color with a mild varietal chard nose. On the mid pallet this wine has vanilla, caramel, some creamyness and some butteryness. This is a very good chard. Not as intense or fruit forward as some but quite good. It doesn’t displace J. Lohr Riverstone as one of my favorites but it’s really quite good! I would give it an 89-90. We paired it with cod and it went quite well!

2009 Flat Rock Cellars The Roger WHITE Pinot Noir!

Ok, I have to admit it. I have never heard of a white pinot noir before so this wine peaked my curiosity. I got to taste it at the iYellow Pino event. Flat Rock Cellars have been doing some great stuff. I really enjoy their Gravity Pinot Noir and I consider it to be one of my favorites in Niagara. The wine is slightly golden in color with a nose of honey reminiscent of a Chardonnay, and some oak as well. On the mid pallet the wine’s taste matches the bouquet with very chard like elements. Some honey, some vanilla, some creamyness, and a little butterscotch and a bit of butter. If you closed your eyes you could imagine this being a California style chard. The finish is medium in length and would be VERY food friendly. I would give this a 90. It is only available at the winery and is $35.20 a bottle. Unique experiences do not come cheap! I’d love to get a bottle of this to do a more in depth tasting.

From the Flat Rock web site:
Well, somehow this red grape variety became a white wine, with a peachy tinge to it. Ross has kept his winemaking techniques very secretive for this wine, but we suspect it involves French oak barrels and maybe some lees stirring based upon the creamy butterscotch and toasty, spirit like oak characteristics.

He suggested we stop asking questions and just taste it. Here’s what we found:

On the nose you could be forgiven for thinking this was in fact a Chardonnay. That is until you catch the distinctive Pinot Noir like characters in the background, such as strawberries, rhubarb, and a hint of earthiness.

The palate is ridiculously smooth and velvety. There is a layer of fruit driven flavours including canned peaches, berries and rhubarb. And then comes the minerality, ever present in wines grown from our limestone rich soils.

iYellow Pinot event

I attended the iYellow wine school last night featuring a number of different Pinot varietals. All of these grape varietals the Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Meunier all come from the same family of grapes but are VERY different. Ange led the group in an informal, easily accessible style making it easy for folks to enjoy and participate. They chose a couple of VERY unique wines I had not tried before and had not even heard of before. The event was held at the Drake which is a funky location which I enjoyed seeing. They provided a bit of food for pairing with the wine that was quite good. All in all I enjoyed myself and recommend you give the iYellow school a try. The price is quite reasonable. I’ll definitely be back. iYellow are running a series of these events so check them out. Thanks Ange!

D’ARENBERG THE MONEY SPIDER ROUSSANNE 2008

A friend gave me this wine as a house warming present. Thanks Dave! I had no idea what to expect when I cracked this one. I’m not well versed in this grape. The wine is golden in color with a nose of honey, somewhat reminiscent of a California style chard. On the mid pallet the wine has some chard like flavors. Some creamyness, some vanilla. Strangely this wine is unoaked. The wine starts subtely on the finisih which builds nicely. This is a VERY food friendly wine. I paired it with a pan fried cod and it went very well. Drink this outstanding effort over the next 2-3 years. Score – 90. (Jay Miller, www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2009)

2005 Vineland Estates Cab Franc

2005 was a great year for Niagara reds. Vineland Estates kept some of these back and recently sent them out to their wine club members. The wine is dark in color with a mild nose of black berries. Around the edges there is some browning (just a little) inidicating this one is getting near it’s due date. Out of the bottle the wine is dominated by big alcohol. Some time in the decanter was warranted. Be sure not to breath to deep or you will be choking … Once it breathed for a bit the mid pallet is dominated by black berries, some blue berries. It starts out nice and big in the mouth and hold promise but then dies out really quickly. The wine is light in finish with no perceivable tannins. This wine really is quite past it’s prime. A mere shadow of it’s former self. It is smooth on the finish with and quite food friendly. I would give it an 88 or so. This one is not at the LCBO and I’m not sure which one on the winery web site is the one this is so I’m not sure what it’s worth.
