Tom Gore Chardonnay 2018

These days, I find myself in the minority, I enjoy oaked chards. This one is golden in color with a nice apple and pear nose. On the mid palate the wine is a lovely well oaked, but not over baked chard displaying lovely vanilla and caramel notes along with apple and pear … On the medium length finish the wine is nice and creamy with smooth acidity to balance it out. Quite a rich chard, we paired it with pan seared scallops and it was lovely. I would give it an 88+, probably one of the nicest new to us chards in a while. Yum. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Dark in color with a mild black berry nose along with some oaky notes. On the mid palate the wine displays dark black berries to match the nose along with some mild oaky notes. On the medium length finish there’s some vibrant acidity and white pepper notes along with some smokey/tobacco notes especially noticeable without food. This is a reasonable complex wine, but it does not come cheap. On the medium length finish the wine display some nice dusty tannins, a hint of sweetness and some mild acidity, along with some mild peppery notes. Château Gémeillan 2014

Dark in color with a nice black berry nose … On the mid palate the displays lovely rich black berries, black cherries and the like to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some vibrant acidity smooth tannins and lovely dark chocolate/coffee notes and palate coating dryness … oh and a hint of peppery notes. This is a very good Bordeaux for the price, not as complex or velvety as more expensive wines but priced just right. We paired it with a grilled Filet Mignon and it was heaven, yum, I would give it an 88+! It should also improve with even as little as a year in the cellar. I often prefer when Cab Franc is in the mix as it is in this one, if even in small amounts. I wish the LCBO/the French were more upfront in the mix as they are with this wine. Piazzano Ventoso Sangiovese 2019

Dark in color with a mild cherry nose with some oaky notes coming through. On the mid palate this wine is a BIG one with lots of dark cherries, tomato notes, firm vibrant acidity and noticeable oak. On the medium length finish the tang from the tomato notes lives on as does some palate coating tannins, dryness and acidity. If you like your wines smooth and elegant, ya this is NOT that, so be careful what you serve this with. I went with a smoked trout and honestly it kinda blew the fish away but was heavenly with the chocolate browning. I would give this an 88 … It’s possible this is a bit young and some aging, or decanting might help. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Sidewood Chardonnay 2018

Pale straw in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some apple and pear. On the mid palate the wine displays some oaky, toasty, spicy/pepper notes with a slightly creamy texture, nice and dry. If your expecting a oak dominant chard you will be disappointed, this leans more to the side of an unoaked chard to my tastes. There some nice mouth grip to the minerality and citrus notes. The LCBO site said grapefruit, I’m not sure I am leaning that far but it has some tangy notes. I would give it an 87-88, expectations are everything and this didn’t meet mine sadly. I won’t be running back for more, it you like more unoaked this might be a nice compromise. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

This is NOT a soft wimpy wine, sipped on it’s own it’s got some boisterous flavors. We paired it with a bacon quiche and it went well, with food it softened. Airfield Yakima Valley Chardonnay 2020

Pale straw in color, the first thing that hits the nose straight out of the bottle is bubble gum, not really strong but noticeable. On the mid palate the wine displays more citrus minerally notes Vs creamy/caramel/oak/buttery notes. This defiitely do my tastes leans more to an unoaked than an oaked chard. It’s not horrible, it’s just not what I’d hoped for. I would give it an 87+. We paired it with pan fried scallops and it was fine, but I missed my oaked chard pairing. 🙁 It is nice and dry, but to my tastes not as rich as I look for from an oaked chard. Airfield Yakima Valley Chardonnay 2020 from LCBO

This wine was fermented 58% in stainless steel (with this portion eschewing malolactic conversion) and 42% in French oak, wherein it spent eight months before harmonizing for an additional month in concrete. The result is a round, velvety Chard brimming with crunchy orchard fruit and applesauce that’ll go beautifully with pork chops or butter-braised scallops.

Clos de los Siete 2018

Inky dark in color with a black berry nose. On the mid palate it’s all black berries coming through along with some mild dark chocolate notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice velvety tannins and some firm acidity … there’s some mild green notes, nice and dry. The wine is a little right when you first open it up, it’s a bit young. It opened up nicely as it breathed. I would give it an -88 I would suggest let it breath a bit or even decant it … or go with patience and wait 6 months, I bet it will make a huge difference. We paired it with rack of lamb, and it was a little to big, slightly overwhelming the meal. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Clos de los Siete 2018 from LCBO

This is the Argentine project of the world-renowned Michel Rolland. From its inaugural release in 2002, this blend of the classic French grapes (Malbec, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon) has gone from strength to strength. It’s a defining expression of high-altitude winemaking, with black and blue fruit, herbs, and violet floral tones. A charming, finessed, impressive addition to your special evening. Pair with grilled meats.

2019 Las Mulas Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Organic

Dark in color with a nice dark cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine spot on matches the nose with dark cherries, some spicy notes and dark chocolate. On the medium length in finish the wine displays some strong peppery notes, firm lively acidity and some tannins, nice and dry. For it’s price this is not a bad wine at all, and a good varietal cab, no vegetal, green or herbal notes. I would give it an -88. From the LCBO web site, check stock:
