Peter Lehmann The Barossan Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Inky dark in color with a nice black cherry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some juicy rich black cherry notes to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine display some nice dusty tannins, a hint of sweetness and some mild acidity, along with some mild peppery notes. There are some minor herbal notes but all in all a nice cab sauv, I would give it an -88. We paired it with a striploin and it was a yumm moment. Quite nice.

Peter Lehmann The Barossan Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 from LCBO

A delectably styled cabernet; the fragrant bouquet shows blackcurrant, dark cherry, violet, vanilla and cedar characters with a touch of tobacco complexity. It is succulent, supple and lingering on the palate with excellent weight and intensity, finishing long and very tasty. At its best: now to 2028. Score – 93. (Sam Kim, wineorbit.co.nz, Sept. 2020)

Château Gémeillan 2014

Dark in color with a nice black berry nose … On the mid palate the displays lovely rich black berries, black cherries and the like to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some vibrant acidity smooth tannins and lovely dark chocolate/coffee notes and palate coating dryness … oh and a hint of peppery notes. This is a very good Bordeaux for the price, not as complex or velvety as more expensive wines but priced just right. We paired it with a grilled Filet Mignon and it was heaven, yum, I would give it an 88+! It should also improve with even as little as a year in the cellar. I often prefer when Cab Franc is in the mix as it is in this one, if even in small amounts. I wish the LCBO/the French were more upfront in the mix as they are with this wine. Piazzano Ventoso Sangiovese 2019

Dark in color with a mild cherry nose with some oaky notes coming through. On the mid palate this wine is a BIG one with lots of dark cherries, tomato notes, firm vibrant acidity and noticeable oak. On the medium length finish the tang from the tomato notes lives on as does some palate coating tannins, dryness and acidity. If you like your wines smooth and elegant, ya this is NOT that, so be careful what you serve this with. I went with a smoked trout and honestly it kinda blew the fish away but was heavenly with the chocolate browning. I would give this an 88 … It’s possible this is a bit young and some aging, or decanting might help. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Sidewood Chardonnay 2018

Pale straw in color with a mild nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some apple and pear. On the mid palate the wine displays some oaky, toasty, spicy/pepper notes with a slightly creamy texture, nice and dry. If your expecting a oak dominant chard you will be disappointed, this leans more to the side of an unoaked chard to my tastes. There some nice mouth grip to the minerality and citrus notes. The LCBO site said grapefruit, I’m not sure I am leaning that far but it has some tangy notes. I would give it an 87-88, expectations are everything and this didn’t meet mine sadly. I won’t be running back for more, it you like more unoaked this might be a nice compromise. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

I’ll be honest and up front, there isn’t a chance I would pay the original price $34.95 let along the reduced price of $28.25 but when I was in my local LCBO they had this one for $19.95 so I jumped … Pale salmon in color with a nice crisp minerally nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays lovely citrus notes and vibrant acidity with the citrus notes lingering. This is a lovely, crisp, dry food friendly bundle of yum. On the mid palate the wine packs a punch with crisp dry minerality and citrus/lime notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some lovely vibrant acidity and crisp dryness along with green apple tart notes. This is NOT a soft wimpy wine, sipped on it’s own it’s got some boisterous flavors. We paired it with a bacon quiche and it went well, with food it softened. Airfield Yakima Valley Chardonnay 2020

Pale straw in color, the first thing that hits the nose straight out of the bottle is bubble gum, not really strong but noticeable. On the mid palate the wine displays more citrus minerally notes Vs creamy/caramel/oak/buttery notes. This defiitely do my tastes leans more to an unoaked than an oaked chard. It’s not horrible, it’s just not what I’d hoped for. I would give it an 87+. On the medium length in finish the wine displays some strong peppery notes, firm lively acidity and some tannins, nice and dry. For it’s price this is not a bad wine at all, and a good varietal cab, no vegetal, green or herbal notes. I would give it an -88. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Dark in color with a nice black cherry nose. On the mid palate there’s some black cherry to match the nose along with some dark chocolate notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some bright vibrant acidity, some tannins and some mild herbal notes. The dryness and acidity linger nicely on the tongue especially without food. This is a bigger cab and will hold up no problem to steak or lamb. Not a bad cab, I would give it a -88 or so … From the LCBO web site, check stock:

William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 from LCBO

This easygoing Cabernet is made with fruit from Lake, Mendocino and Sonoma counties, and a dollop of Merlot is blended in to round out the mouthfeel and add extra depth before the wine is aged in French oak. Look for ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit with wisps of vanilla, and pair the wine with marinated flank steak and grilled bell peppers.

2017 Tommasi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

I have to admit, Amarone’s are not a wine I have a lot of experience, and given the importance of pairing food/wine to me, I struggled with the best place to put this wine, it was a gift from Dale/Lori! … I chose to have it with rabbit stew, as my wine instructor loved to say, if it grows together it goes together. So happy Thursday let’s crack this puppy! Ink dark in color with a mild nose, which btw is about all that is mild about this wine. On the mid palate the wine displays some firm crisp peppery and spicy notes along with some rich deep, dark berry notes. This wine does NOT display the bold dried fruits that often accompany apassimento wines, sometimes so strong you feel like your sucking on a raisin. On the medium length finish the wine displays strong spicy notes, nice dryness, and tannins. This is a lovely wine, I would give it an 88 or so … the kind of wine that could have you embracing Appasimento’s thanks Dale/Lori! from the LCBO web site check stock:

Strewn 2019 Barrel Aged Chardonnay

Pale to slightly golden in color with a mild pear and apple nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some vibrant apple and pear notes to match the nose. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice citrus notes, vanilla and some noticeable sugar. I would give this wine an 87-88, for the price it’s not a horrible wine, but I won’t be rushing out to grab more … This is more of a gently oaked chard. We paired it with grilled scallops and it was ok, but the sugar level was quite noticeable. From the winery’s web site: (I bought it at Loblaws).

Our Barrel Aged Chardonnay follows the guiding philosophy: oak should be to wine as seasoning is to food—enough to add interest and complexity but not so much that it overwhelms. This is the Strewn Chardonnay with the lightest amount of oak presence.

ProfileTasting Notes: Aromas of vanilla, peach, pear and toasty oak with a smooth, rich texture and a long, refreshing citrus finish.

Winemaker Notes: The winemaking team works with a combination of new, one and two-year old (or older) barrels from oak grown in France, the United States and Canada. Some of the wine is fermented then aged in barrels; a portion is fermented in stainless steel then transferred to barrel for aging. The diversity adds complexity, flavour notes and balance.

Food Pairing Notes: A lovely versatile wine, this lighter Chardonnay goes well with white meats (try with Chicken Fried Rice) and creamy dishes (a simple Mac ‘n Cheese).
