Murphy-Goode Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This wine has long been a fav of mine since first encountering it at Reds … Ruby in color with a nice inviting red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice crisp dry dark cherry notes, definitely more of a fruit forward style, but not a fruit bomb. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice crisp acidity and soft tannins. Definitely more of drink now style of wine that can easily be paired with softer flavored foods. We paired it with quiche and it went well. There isn’t even a hint of herbal, or minty notes that I don’t care for in some cabs. I would give it an -88, yum. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

This juicy, fresh wine reflects an easygoing, ripe, approachable style that has wide popular appeal. The dark fruit, cassis and herbs are framed by vanilla, spice, and moderately employed oak that adds some toast but keeps the fruit at the fore. The balance and juicy character will make it a fine option for stews or roasted meats.

Zenato San Benedetto Lugana 2020

Pale straw in color with a minerally nose … On the mid palate the wine delivers beautifully crisp minerally and citrus notes that gently coat the palate. On the medium length finish the vibrant acidity lives on nicely. This wine does not taste anywhere near as sweet as the 7g/l would imply. Super food friendly, a delicous wine, yum, I would give it an -88. Quite nice. from the LCBO web site, check stock: This wine is 100% Trebbiano di Lugana. Winery’s information

Lily Sparkling Rosé VQA

Slightly pale salmon in color a nice minerally nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice crisp minerality along with some light citrus notes. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice vibrant acidity, crisp dryness, some creaminess and citrus. This is a nice simple bubbly for a reasonable price. I would give it an -88 which for the price is good … This is a Colio Estates wine from the Lake Erie region. In spite of this being 15g/l in residual sugar, you don’t get a lot of sweetness, and in spite of this being a Riesling blend, I don’t get any honeysuckle. From the LCBO web site, check stock.

Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir 2018

Dark in color with a beautiful soft red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some lovely elegant raspberries and strawberries, along with some oak notes, spot on varietal. On the medium length finish the wine follows the fruit up immediately with some big bold spicy notes, pepper and the like. There’s noticeably hot alcohol and acidity, this wine might still be a little young … decanting softened it noticeably. I would give it an 88+, from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Pighin Pinot Grigio 2020

Terroni’s restaurant in Toronto introduced me to Friuli wines, crisp dry, food friendly wines, so when ones come on the vintages list I give them a look. This one is 100% Pinot Grigio, which in general, I am not a fan … pale straw in color with a mild citrus nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some citrus and minerally notes best appreciated without food, this is definitely a milder wine, so you will need to be careful what you serve it with to appreciate the subtle flavors. On the medium length finish the wine is nice and dry with the minerality and citrus sticking to the tongue, again more noticeably without food. I would give this wine an -88. Jean-Ernest Descombes Morgon 2018

Biases up front, I’m really not a fan of most Niagara, and even Ontario gamay noirs, they are too much more of a noveau style with fruit forward, and sweetness being dominant. I’ve been schooled before about some serious Gamays from France so when this popped on the vintages list I gave it a try. Dark in color with a mild black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some nice black fruits. On the medium length in finish the wine displays some vibrant peppery notes, acidity and softer tannins, nice and dry almost dusty … This is definitely not the fruit bomb some Gamays are and is more of a serious wine. We paired it with meat spaghetti and I can’t say it was a match made in heaven but it went ok. I would give it an -88 or so, not a bad wine, and I always enjoy variety but not an amazing wine for my palate, I might have had a different opinion with a different food pairing. from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Longford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Dark in color with a nice black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some vibrant black fruits, black cherry, blackberry and the like. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice spicy, peppery notes along with some edgy tannins. There’s some tobacco and mocha notes as well. The wine is a bit young, some breathing wouldn’t hurt. It’s quite dry, but not as dry as I would expect with 3g/l … Not a bad cab for the money, but not one of my favs either. Curvos Loureiro 2020

I’ve previously had a Alveleda that was a blend of Loureiro and Alvarinho so I was curious who brought what to the table so decided to try this one … It’s 100% Louriero. On the nose there are some mild flinty notes along with some distinct minerality. On the mid palate the wine displays some vibrant green apple notes along with a hint of almost honey suckle. On the medium length finish the wine displays some nice vibrant acidity and citrus notes that coat the palate. On the medium length finish the citrus/lime notes and acidity linger nicely. This is a super food friendly wine. I would give it an -88 which for the price is a bargain, it’s in the general list and is a similar blend of grapes seen on the Maria Papoila I previously reviewed but at a lower price point, Loureiro/Alvarinho. Marcel Cabelier Vieilles Vignes Chardonnay 2015 from LCBO

This is a seldom seen chardonnay from Jura, a sub-alpine region known for firm traditional, somewhat oxidative wines from chardonnay and other white varieties. Fans of fino sherry will approve of this mature example. It pours medium gold. The nose is very nutty, toasty, cedary and vaguely musty, with some baked apple and lemon tucked below the surface. It is medium weight, firm with riveting yet balanced acidity at its core. Impressive structure and excellent length. I would try this as an aperitif white accompanying strong washed rind cheeses, nuts and olives. Score – 89. (David Lawrason, winealign.com, Dec. 29, 2020)

2020 Speck Bros. Family Tree ‘The Goat Lady’ Chardonnay VQA

Slightly golden in color with a rich golden delicious apple nose. On the mid palate the wine packs a vibrant golden delicious apple note to match the nose along with some noticeable oaking notes like butterscotch and the like. On the medium length finish the wine displays some creamy notes along with some mild acidity, the fruit lingers nicely on the tongue. This will never be mistake for anything other than an oaked chard, and to some extent the fruit is a little overwhelmed by the oaking. Is it overbaked? Well that’s something that you would need to decide. Not my favorite chard of all time, and the 10 g/l is noticeable but not overwhelming. I’d give this an 87-88. From the LCBO web site, check stock, we paired it with pan fried white bass, and to say it was a match made in heaven would be an exaggeration, it went ok, slightly too sweet, something dryer would have complimented the meal better IMHO. Food pairing is such an art, ya this day I missed the perfect pair … it happens.

This wine is named after Marion who kept goats next to the vineyard when the Speck Bros. were children. Marion fed their dog Boswell warm bowls of fresh goats’ milk and it didn’t take long for him to abandon them and move in with her. A creamy rich Chardonnay that keeps you coming back for more.

  • 100% Chardonnay.
  • Fermented and aged in American oak for 7 months.
  • Partial malolactic fermentation produces a creamy rich mouthfeel while maintaining freshness.

2020 Miraval Rosé

Salmon in color with soft red berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays some strawberry and cranberry notes … On the tongue there’s a hint of pepper and sharp tart notes that’s a little unusual and lasts a while, mostly without food. With food it is less noticeable but still unusual. We paired it with hamburgers and it kind of fought with the food. Not a perfect match at all … On the medium length finish the wine displays some citrus and tart notes that linger lightly … The complexity on this wine is interesting in that it has layers of flavors. I would give it an 87-88, one must be very careful what it is paired with. From the LCBO web site, check stock:

Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Inky dark in color with a big black berry nose. On the mid palate the wine displays vibrant fruit forward black cherry notes along with some light mocha. On the lighter side of medium in length the wine displays soft tannins and acidity. The black fruits linger in the mouth. There’s a sweetness to the wine that seems higher than it is. There’s no errant minty or herbal notes that I don’t care for, so at least there’s that 😉 We paired it with a strip loin, and it went ok, but not really a compliment to the meal. Now comes the question … would I run back and grab more? Nahh there’s better wines. It’s ok just not an amazing wine to my tastes. This is a very fruit forward, drink now style … I would give it an 87-88, from the LCBO web site, check stock:

Kilikanoon Killerman's Run Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 from LCBO

Regarded as an outstanding riesling vintage in the Valley, ’17 was also kind to cabernet sauvignon producing ripe flavours and varietal flair. One of those all-rounder, favourite kind of wines that get consumed early rather than later, it holds no pretence and is all pleasure. Drink by: 2026. Special Value. Score – 93. D’Angelo Aglianico del Vulture 2016

Dark in color with a funky nose, lots of wood and earthy notes coming through, unusual to say the least. On the mid palate the wine displays some typical rough edgy notes, black cherries, earth notes to match the nose and some dominate oak. On the medium length finish the wine displays some firm dryness, edgy, velvety tannins and vibrant acidity. This is a typically rustic wine with higher levels of complexity than I am use to on Aglianicos. This is the first time I’ve noticed the del Vulture in the name and Wikipedia says ” Located on volcanic soils derived from nearby Mount Vulture“. This is definitely an interesting wine with a lot of character, but be careful what you serve it with, IMHO this is NOT a smooth elegant wine. We served it with lasagne and it went ok, not a perfect pairing but good none the less. I would give it a solid 88. from the LCBO web site check stock:

D'Angelo Aglianico del Vulture 2016 from LCBO

A fresh, brambly red, this is medium- to full-bodied and loaded with freshly chopped rosemary and marjoram notes. Taut tannins create a dense, chewy frame for flavors of dried cherry and currant fruit, black tea, smoke and sandalwood. Best from 2022 through 2027. Score – 90. Speck Bros. Family Tree The Padré Cabernet/Merlot 2019

Dark in color with a nice vibrant black cherry nose. On the mid palate it spot on matches the nose with nice dark cherries, some tobacco notes, and rich mocha. On the medium length finish the wine displays some mild pepper and smooth tannins. This is a really good steak wine, the sugar content at 10g/l is a little higher than I would like and you can definitely taste the sweetness, but it’s fairly balanced. There are some noticeable alcohol notes on the finish. I would give this an -88 or so, which for the price is not bad at all. I couldn’t find anything about the specific blend other than it being cab sauv/cab franc and merlot. Speck have been doing some amazing stuff, their Three of Hearts Rose is one of my fav roses out of Niagara right now. From the LCBO web site, check stock.

Speck Bros. Family Tree The Padré Cabernet/Merlot 2019 from LCBO

Heavenly aromas rise from the glass – red and black cherry/berry fruit, dark plum and grilled savoury herbs. It’s sourced from the holy trinity of the Bordeaux blend – cabernet franc/cabernet sauvignon/merlot. Flavours of black bramble berry and juicy Bing cherry are joined on the mid-palate with lively tang and pizzazz. It’s medium-plus bodied with good balance and excellent mouthfeel and lingering finish; it’s so much more than the psalm of its parts. Pick up a case or so and rejoice over the next year and even longer and pour with roast turkey and all the fixings. Exceptional Value! Drink or cellar. Score – 91.
